Sacks by individual defensive players did not become an official statistic until 1982. However, with the help of media guides we can piece together some unofficial numbers:
| Code: | ------------------------------
Single Season
------------------------------
1. Bruce Smith 1990 19.0
2. Bryce Paup 1995 17.5
3. Bruce Smith 1986 15.0
4. Tom Sestak 1964 14.5 (14-game season)
5t. Bruce Smith 1992 14.0
5t. Bruce Smith 1993 14.0
5t. Bruce Smith 1997 14.0
5t. Aaron Schobel 2006 14.0
9. Bruce Smith 1996 13.5
10. Bruce Smith 1989 13.0
11t. Ben Williams 1980 12.0
11t. Bruce Smith 1987 12.0 (15-game season)
11t. Aaron Schobel 2005 12.0
14. Aaron Schobel 2003 11.5
15. Bruce Smith 1988 11.0 |
Notes:- Bruce Smith accounts for 60% of Buffalo's top 15 single-season leaders; Aaron Schobel accounts for 20%
- The only two seasons on this list that occurred prior to 1982 are 1980 (Ben Williams) and 1964 (Tom Sestak)
- Extrapolating Tom Sestak's 14.5 unofficial sacks in 1964's 14-game season to 16-games projects to 16.5 sacks
- Mario Williams has 10.5 sacks this season and has a really good chance at cracking the top 15... he is projected to have 13.0, which would place him in the top 10
| Code: | ------------------------------
All-Time
------------------------------
1. Bruce Smith 171.0
2. Aaron Schobel 78.0
3. Phil Hansen 61.5
4. Cornelius Bennett 52.5
5t. Tom Sestak 51.0
5t. Ben Williams 51.0
7. Darryl Talley 38.5
8. Sherman White 38.0
9. Bryce Paup 33.0
10. Chris Kelsay 32.5
11. Jeff Wright 31.5
12t. Mike Kadish 29.0
12t. Fred Smerlas 29.0
14. Mike Stratton 28.0
15. Ron McDole 27.5 |
Notes:- Aaron Schobel is second on the all-time franchise sack list... and he has less than half (~46%) the number Bruce Smith accumulated; Smith had more sacks than #2 (Schobel) and #3 (Hansen) combined
- Bruce Smith, Phil Hansen, and Cornelius Bennett are each in the franchise's all-time top 5... all three were on the team at the same time for five years (1991-1995)
- Buffalo had good pass rushers prior to 1990... Tom Sestak (1962-1968) and Ben Williams (1976-1985) each rank in the franchise's all-time top 5
- Nearly half the players on the all-time franchise list had seasons that occurred prior to 1982 (7 out of 15)
- Chris Kelsay has the tenth most sacks in Bills history and is 0.5 sacks away from the number nine spot... wow
