Of course, if the Ravens do lose, then the talk about "backing into the playoffs" and all that nonsense will start up again. But winning nine of your first eleven games gives you the chance to do that if your team is then decimated by injuries (and this is actually worse than decimation, because more than five guys are out).
But this is why I can't really blame Dean Pees too much at the moment. At the start of the season, the defense looked bad, and it was bad. But things really picked up after the bye week, with Suggs coming back and players seeming to get the hang of Pees' scheme. But then they all got injured. |
Pees probably will get the benefit of the doubt since the defense has had so many guys miss time due to injury but I doubt it would be any better if everybody was healthy. Sure the defense looked better after the bye week but a lot of teams would playing Cleveland, Oakland, the Steelers with Byron Leftwich, a highly inconsistent Chargers team, and the Steelers with Charlie Batch (even tough they lost that game). Just watching the "blitz" packages and the way some of the pass-defense plays are constructed Pees throws out makes me cringe. |

The problem with refs letting replay sort it out is that there might not be indisputable evidence. So when there is all that congestion they need to make a call.
