Peterson got the big last play, but the much-maligned Christian Ponder made some of the biggest throws of the game to get the Vikings to the postseason. He hit Michael Jenkins on a third-and-11 for 25 yards just after the two-minute warning and he hit Jarius Wright with a perfectly thrown strike for 65 yards to set up a touchdown pass to Jenkins earlier in the fourth quarter.
Ponder was 16-of-28 overall for 234 yards and three touchdowns, which is a pretty good performance for the biggest game of your brief professional life.

| He still made some ridiculous decisions, but they didn't cost him and he stepped up in the clutch. That throw to Wright was perfect. |

I still have long term questions about Ponder moving forward after seeing what we did this entire season for him, but damn if he didn't step up in a big way yesterday. He came up with multiple big third down plays and finally took advantage of some one-on-ones on the outside.
Promising step forward, lets see if he can duplicate it this week. _________________

!00% agree. He needs ton continue on this upward tick, even if he doesn't lead them to a win in Green Bay him laying a dud of a game would be worrisome. He's done enough to warrant a look at the start of next season and to show that he can be a starting NFL QB, but he needs to continue to show improvement otherwise he'll just look like David Carr or Byron Leftwich, almost good enough to start, good in some stretches, but not reliable long term. _________________ Gnat's Movie Reviews

I'd say he has done enough to be the starter next year, but I'd still want some kind of insurance plan.....and I did not think I'd be typing this 4 weeks ago. _________________ Wins are a team stat, not a QB stat |

He's shown that he CAN throw the long ball. He's made better decisions lately. I wouldn't write him off as not being a decent NFL starting QB this soon. He deserves to be penciled in as the starter for next season, and given a chance all next season, unless he plays terribly over several games in a row. He has progressed some under not-so good conditions, with a new OL trying to grow together, and should progress a lot faster next season, with that line maturing more, and added talent coming in at Guard (I hope!).
But, The Vikes should bring in a proven veteran as backup (who can lead a team in a playoff race, not just play a game or two). _________________ http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/9633/av5e.jpg |

Too bad some people just can't be happy with a certain player contributing to winning games -- 4 in a row now.
He might very well make horrible decisions in this wild-card game and he might just lose his first playoff start -- but I can say he was as much a factor in the Vike losing 6 games as them winning 10.
Now, go look at how players rally around him . . . compare that type of persona to the arrogance/selfishness of a Jeff George, Jay Cutler, etc . . . how well did/do their teams rally around them?
I expected Ponder to be a top 15 QB this year, but he really wasn't. Then again, see how he and the team performed together and compare that to Cutler, Newton, Gabbert, heck even Matt Stafford.
Ponder played substantially better this year as compared to 2011 and a lot of that had to do with Kalil, Rudolph and Harvin, as well as Adrian's unbelievable year. So, let's presume talent surrounding the QB impacts his overall level of play . . . why wouldn't he start all of 2013 after the Front Office gets him more WR help and another guard?
If you don't like the guy, oh well . . . most of us do and want him to stay put and evolve. |

Great postgame presser from Ponder.
Referring to his deep pass to Wright.
"I don't have the arm strenth to make that throw but somehow I did it"
I soured on Ponder during the middle of the season but he's shown a lot these past 4 weeks. I can't help but be excited by his growth and maturity. He'll never be Aaron Rodgers but with Adrian Peterson in the backfiled we don't need him to be. _________________

Honestly. He didn't even put everything he had into it. The kid has a better arm than he shows most of the time.
That was a spectacular throw. |
