|

Ever since the season ended, I've been trying to get the best possible look I can at all 12 playoff teams to see what they do well and won't they don't do well, both on the field and in the front office. Why are you doing, you might ask? Simple: The NFL is a copycat league. I want this team back in the playoffs so bad I couold scream, which lead me to the Hecrulean task of trying to find similiarities, either good or bad, that ALL 12 playoff teams shared. Not 5-6 of them, not 8-9 of them, ALL 12. After literally 3 weeks of researching stats and metrics and roster and coaches, I have to been able to a few. Not many but a few. I want to see if you any of you guys can guess them. Throw out your best educated thoughts as what all of these 12 playoff teams share and we'll see if you're right. The right and wrong answers may surprise you!!! _________________

Throwing a couple of metrics out there:
Ability to convert on 3rd down
Turnover margin |

Ability to convert on 3rd down is....incorrect. Washington was bottom 10 in this category with just a 35.8% 3rd down conversion success rate.
Turnover margin is....incorrect. Minnesota, Indianapolis and #1 seed Denver all had negative turnover ratios.
Top 15 defense in terms of yards and points is....incorrect. New England, Indianapolis, Washington, Minnesota, Baltimore and #1 seed Atlanta were all outside the top 15 in yards allowed. Indianapolis and Washington were both outside the top 15 in points allowed.
High number of rushing attempts is....incorrect. #1 seed Atlanta was just 26th in the league in rushing attempts, with a meager 378 (Arizona had 352 for last place).
0-4. _________________

I'll give you 1 of the similiarities that all teams share that I found: All 12 teams have 1 or more offensive lineman selected in the 1st round of the NFL Draft (Not a free agent, someone they drafted) who made more than half of their teams starts. _________________

I thought it might have had something to do with penalties, but not anymore.
It is not rushing YPC on either side of the football.
10 of the 12 playoff teams have a QBR for in the top 16 of the league. Minnesota and Indianapolis ruins that. _________________ Patrick Peterson - 92 targets, 40 catches allowed, 602 yards, 6 TD's, 7 INT's

But then again so did the following teams that missed the playoffs;
Cowboys, Jets, Dolphins, Steelers, Browns, Lions, Bears, Buccaneers, Panthers, Jaguars, Cheifs. _________________ Patrick Peterson - 92 targets, 40 catches allowed, 602 yards, 6 TD's, 7 INT's

Correct.
I'll give you 1 spoiler: None of the similarities I found involved the QB position. _________________

Very low percentage of INT to Pass Attempts?
QB's throw more TD's than INT's?
Turnover ratio greater than 0?
Very low percentage of opponent's 1st downs due to penalties?
Win the time of possession battle?
(EDIT) Oh, I see nothing related to QB... _________________

I wish I could think of something on the defensive side of the ball. You'd think there would be something...maybe even ST's??? I got nothing. _________________

Wanted to say they all have pass catching TE but that not true. All so wanted to say they all have the same starting OL all year but that not true either. _________________

All teams are in the top 18 in scoring.
That is about all I got so far. _________________
