my father (steeler fan) and i (panthers fan duh) have an ongoing argument over who is better between the two. he swears ward is better because he's "the best blocking WR of all-time" and won a super bowl mvp... while i argue that smitty is a good blocker and put up good enough numbers to overcome the hardware that came from one, single performance.
for funsies here's an average season of their careers. left out ward's last and first years (since he didn't start for one and sucked in the other). left out smitty's rookie season (returner only) and 2004 when he only played for one half.
Smitty: 74 catches, 1106 yards, 6 TDs
Hines: 78 catches, 956 yards, 7 TDs
so yeah what does ff comparisons think? _________________

Ward. More TDs, less fumbles. _________________ Geno Smith, Tavon Austin, Stedman Bailey, and Bruce Irvin will all have at least 1 pro bowl season each by the end of the decade.

Smith is the clear choice here. If he had the quarterbacks that Ward had throughout his career this wouldn't even be worthy of a comparison IMO. He's just a more explosive and game-changing player.
People also forget that he was an all-pro returner as a rookie. |

Ward had no consistent quarterback for his first 4 seasons. Stewart was cool and all, but he wasn't a quarterback. Maddox had that good season in 2002, Ward has a stellar season, but Maddox goes back to being the bust he was in 2003, and Ward still had a great season. Ben was protected by a running game and defense for his first 2 seasons, not to mention he missed 4 games in 2005 and Ward had to deal with Batch/Maddox and then had to deal with Ben's growing pains in 2006.
For the bulk of Ward's prime, he only had 1 seasons with a competent quarterback/offense. Ben had a great 2 first seasons, but the offense was not pass happy at all. It lead the league in rushing attempts for his first two seasons. Ward was 31 by the time Ben had a pro-bowl seasons and the offense became pass friendly.
Not that Smith had it any better and I think he's a better player, but your observations about Ward having better quarterbacks is a bit delusional. _________________ Kickers are people too |

Ward played with Ben for how many seasons? 6? 7? I honestly don't know but it's probably close to that.
Smith played with a functional QB when? Please don't say Delhomme
He has had QB problems his whole career.
Granted Hines had no one good before Ben, but that long with Ben is still good. _________________

Hines Ward: 217 games played. 55.68 yards per game. 12.1 yards per reception. 0.39 TD's per game.
Steve Smith: 164 games played. 68.76 yards per game. 14.9 yards per reception. 0.37 TD's per game.
Pretty clear who the better WR was/is. Smith wins by a good margin. _________________

I would pay to watch this.
Pretty sure Keith Rivers, Ken Lucas, Anthony Bright and the entire Ravens team would also pay for it... _________________

I always feel weird looking at topics with all lowercase letters. Felt even worse opening the topic.
On the question at hand, it's Steve Smith by a pretty good margin. Not a "not even close" margin, but enough to know 10/10, Steve is the better receiver. |
