Goodell floats novel idea for replacing kickoffs
Basically the concept is, instead of kickoffs, the team which would normally do so would have a 4th and 15 shot at their own 30 yardline. They could either go for it or punt it away. This would happen instead of all kickoffs. The person who mentioned it to Goodell was Greg Schiano. _________________ Reggie Wayne for HOF

Very few teams are going to even attempt it until very late in games in lieu of an onside kick -- so essentially all you're doing is replacing a kickoff with a punt.
No thanks. _________________

Football has been around for how long?
And now Goodell thinks he can just go change a major part of the game?
You know what, not even worth the time. _________________

My first reaction was, huh... 4th and 15 is a heckuva lot easier to convert than recovering an onside kick...
That would certainly heat up some of the desperation plays at the end of most games. No longer would teams play soft defense and allow a team to score easily knowing they have an better chance of getting the ball right back..
Personally, i think this rule change has NO CHANCE IN HELL of ever getting past the rules committee.. no way. But I have been wrong before! |

It'd be cool to see a game end with the time of possession of like 58 to 2. Watch a team convert like 10 4 and 15's in a row lol. _________________

For people who are against a QB driven league, this just adds to that. Having a guy like Manning, Brees, or Brady would be huge for plays like this. _________________

| As the article says, the idea is to get rid of high speed collisions which I don't disagree with. I think this isn't the greatest idea but I'm sure the competition committee can probably brainstorm tweeks to this to make it more reasonable. |

Just think of the salary cap that would clear up without having some of these kickers on their rosters. Grand idea. _________________

So, you try to basically screw a few players out of their jobs; for starters.
Also, you give the team the ball first; only to punt it away...? A punt which basically... is like a kick-off anyway?

| If this is really about injuries, especially head injuries on kick offs, why isn't it manditory to wear a Revo Speed? If the NFL is really that worried about head injuries why isn't the latest and greatest helmet standard for every player? Plus with how the kickoff is set up now, most kickoffs are touchbacks anyways. |

Chris Kluwe address this via twitter, he didn't flat out reject the idea and brought up some valid points for it. He did say though that they would have to address pass interference in particular put more emphasis on calling more offensive pass interference to make punting the much better option. _________________ Gnat's Movie Reviews

There are other things to consider before this IMO....
1. You can just end kickoffs and make every team start at the 20 or even make it harder and start at the 15.
2. Line the 10 tacklers on a kickoff at the 50 and make the kicker kick from the 35 still. This will limit the speed they gain by running down field. There will still be collisions, but it should limit them. Most of the time the returner would down it anyway I imagine.
3. Make the returner stand in the endzone in a box. Replace the kicker with a tackler and when the whistle blows they start. You move the kickoff team to the 50 and again hope it reduces the speed some. Since both would start running the the same time the amount of speed gained would be reduced by the time they hit each other since they are closer when it starts.
