|
|
|
As the 2011 draft picks near the end of their second season, this draft looks to be the best our team has had in years.
1(30). DE Muhammad Wilkerson (Temple)
2011: 49 tackles, 3 sacks, 2 PD, 1 FF, 1 safety
2012: 56 tackles, 4 sacks, 2 PD, 3 FF, 1 FR, 1 TD
Simply put, Wilkerson is a beast. He has far exceeding expectations and has been our MVP this season. His potential is downright scary, as he is already turning into one of the best defensive linemen in the NFL. This was an excellent pick by Tanny and the best one he has made since Darrelle Revis in 2007.
3(94). NT Kenrick Ellis (Hampton)
2011: 5 tackles
2012: 9 tackles
Ellis has not produced much yet, but that was to be expected from a player from Hampton University. He has flashed some potential in preseason action. Hopefully, we can soon start to see that talent showcase itself when it counts. Ellis could be our starting NT next season. It is too early to give a definitive assessment of this pick.
4(126). RB Bilal Powell (Louisville)
2011: 13 rushes, 21 yards, 1.6 YPC; 1 catch, 7 yards
2012: 89 rushes, 356 yards, 4 YPC, 4 TD; 9 catches, 76 yards
After a poor rookie season, Powell has had a very solid sophomore campaign. While he is far from a star, Powell has certainly made a case to be our starting RB. I like Powell going forward as a very good #2 or timeshare RB. He has had a better season than Shonn Greene has had.
5(153). WR Jeremy Kerley (TCU)
2011: 29 catches, 314 yards, 1 TD
2012: 52 catches, 728 yards, 2 TD
Kerley has been our best receiver this season and looks to be a steal in the fifth round. Although he is not especially tall or fast, Kerley has had a great deal of success out of the slot this season. He reminds me a bit of Jerricho Cotchery. Very nice pick this late.
7(208). QB Greg McElroy (Alabama)
2011: no stats
2012: 5/7, 29 yards, 1 TD
McElroy likely does not have a future as a starter, but could be a very solid back-up. He is probably the best QB on the roster, but that is not saying much. McElroy was a nice pick in the 7th, but he's not the next Tom Brady.
7(227). WR Scotty McKnight (Colorado)
He just broke up with Hayden Panettiere. What a bust.
What are your thoughts on this draft class? Is it enough to save Tanny's job? _________________

Lets face it, Scotty wasn't going to keep her if he didn't turn into a star.
Besides, her new character on Nashville is straight outta Whore Island. |

| Scotty failed to split Hayden into long halves. He is the worst pick, hands down. |

Looking at the fourth through seventh rounds, you can already see a bunch of names that are no longer with their teams. They definitely did a great job in this draft. Much better job than they did in 2010 with the help of hindsight. _________________

Ellis really needs to step up. Have not been the least bit impressed with him.
I love Mo, hes a perfect fit as 5-tech. I Also think he could play the 3-tech in a 4-3 if we ever had to make the switch.
Im a big Bilal Powell fan. I didnt initially like the pick but when I did my research I was pretty impressed with his upside. Hes been very solid this year and could at the very least be part of a two back system.
Kerley really made me eat my words this year. I wanted to cut him in training camp for the fact that hes not tall, not very fast, and nothing really stands out about him. However hes shown he has very good hands, can get open and is a PERFECT Z receiver. I just dont see him as starter and I also dont see the Cotchery comparison.
McElroy has potential and I still believe he should be active and the first to get the call when Sanchez blows again. Hes extremely smart, throws a clean ball and is pretty accurate. Theres upside with McElroy despite what most think. He'll probably stay a back-up, but given a real opportunity he might be more.
It was a solid draft class, but lets be honest, only 1 player is starting so lets not over rate it just yet. If Bilal and Ellis make more strides next year this could end up being a really good draft. I give it a B as it stands today. _________________

Honestly, I think it's a pretty good class if you get all but one of your players to be either key backups or starters.
That's how teams are built. It's not always about getting those superstars. |

Yeah Ellis has a lot to prove, but all the other picks besides McKnight showed us something. I was beginning to have my doubts on Kerley & Powell, but they are proving me wrong. Happy about that. _________________

I think it's been the injuries holding Ellis back more then his play. If he can get a healthy season under his belt I think he can be productive enough to hold down the NT spot. _________________
