Should the Ravens Let Flacco Walk?
Yes, he isn't worth $15 million a year.

Yes, he isn't capable of leading the Ravens to a Super Bowl

Maybe, if surrounded by elite weapons on offense, combined with a very good defense Flacco can win a Super Bowl and thus the Ravens should consider resigning him

I posted this in the Ravens forum, and was wondering what the league wide reaction would be.

To start this off, this is more a thought experiment than an actual proposal, but this is basically to walk through the costs and benefits of letting Flacco walk, and it is not an overreaction to the Steelers game today, rather, what I think is a reasonable breakdown of Flacco's market value vs his performance over the last two years.

I'd argue that market value for Flacco is probably 5 years and 75 million dollars, though that is much more than what I think the Ravens would like to pay a quarterback, and I quite frankly don't think he's worth any more than 5 years and 35 million dollars, he has a big arm, can make all the throws, but he still throws stupid interceptions, fails to produce against good defenses or on the road, and has zero pocket presence. He puts up most of his big stats at home, against bad defenses, and relies on others to win big games. Letting Flacco walk or tagging and trading him might be the most a viable option.

The best replacements on the free agent market would be Matt Moore and Jason Campbell, obviously not the best of options, and we could in theory trade for Matt Flynn, Alex Smith, or if possible sign Michael Vick should he be cut.

I'd argue that Vick would most likely be the best replacement for Flacco should we let him walk, as despite the difference in size, Vick has largely the same skill set as Flacco, with the added benefit of mobility. I'd venture to guess that he would be available for 3 years and roughly 15 million, with the last two years essentially being semantics. To use baseball terminology I'd assume Flacco and Vick average roughly the same WAR, and we would have an additional 10 million dollars per year in cap space.

More importantly, should this fail, we would be in position to draft a truly elite quarterback, as Jeff Hostetler, Trent Dilfer, and Brad Johnson are the only non elite quarterbacks to win a super bowl in my life time, and all three had the luxury of a great defense.

The Ravens can be a good team with Flacco, and he can tease the fan base enough for us to think he is capable of winning a Super Bowl, but I doubt that he can or will, and think the money Flacco will demand can be better spent elsewhere. We have surrounded him with weapons, an above average receiving corp, two above average tight ends, and Ray Rice. Flacco is an above average player at best and Ravens fans cannot convince ourselves he is elite.

Edit: I'm not saying that Vick would be an upgrade, but the Ravens could get similar production at a much lower cost. Plus the added benefit to the run game that comes with Vick.

Funny how last year he looked poised to break into that next level, but no.

I would also agree Vick would be an upgrade.

Yeah no.
If Henne falls on his face, I'd want Flacco.

Haven't read the full piece yet (I will, I promise), but just one thing that stood out to me to correct:
You really wouldn't need to trade for Alex Smith. The Niners are very likely to going to end up having to release him, as he's due a $1 million bonus just prior to before free agency starts, and if he's on the roster by the start of April his 2013 base salary is fully guaranteed.

Fans like to think that teams will/should try to squeeze every last bit of return value out of a player, but more often than not teams would rather just cut the ties, free themselves of the cash commitment, and be the "bigger individual" and let the player have free reign of where they want to sign.

Alex Smith laughs at this comment.

I would keep him, but guarantee as little money as possible.

He's never going to be an elite QB but he's going to want to be paid like one. On one hand it's a QB driven league and it's hard to get a QB that's significantly better than Flacco, on the other hand is Flacco really worth elite QB money? If they don't resign him they're championship window is probably closed for at least 2 years. If they do resign him, will they have enough cap space to build around him?

If I were the Ravens I'd probably sign him unless I could identify areas that the money could be better spent on. If you can improve a multitude of other areas and find a QB in the draft then that's the better move. But, in the end it is a QB driven league and while Flacco isn't spectacular, he's serviceable.

Ravens watch him tear the league apart for the next 10 years.

In before Cam Cameron being brought up.

That being said, I've felt for a while now that Flacco is what he is. A top-15ish QB who you shouldn't ask to be the one to win you each and every game. The thing is that if the Ravens can't find a better replacement they are just going to have to stick it out with him. I certainly wouldn't want to be paying the amount of money he would be asking for.

The Ravens won't let him walk. But if for whatever reason they did, I wouldn't mind the Browns signing him.
