So here's a question..
Let's say, just for funsies, that Henne had started the whole season, and would play as he has since he came in at the end of the Indy game (so forget his performance against the Raiders). Based on how close games were, with increased production out of the QB position, our season could likely look something like:
@Vikings - W
Texans - L
@Colts - W
Bengals - L
Bears - L
@Raiders - W
@Packers - W
Lions - L
Colts - L
@Texans - L
Titans - W
Now, I'm not saying that this would be our record with a competent QB, but rather that if Henne took his last few games and played like that throughout a season, this could very possibly be the outcome.
If this was our record (5-6), with a good chance of winning 5 of the next 6 and making the playoffs while without MJD and Daryl Smith for a large portion of time, would anyone be calling for Gene Smith's head?
Because if Henne leads us to a good record down the stretch here and continues to play as he has, that just might be the viewpoint that gets put on this, that this team could have been a 9, 10, or 11 win team if Henne had emerged earlier in the season and been the Day One starter. _________________

Think you still do, the body of work, with diminished returns...several picks gone, several traded picks not worth the investment (only one that "worked" was Derek Cox), and you swung and missed hard on Blaine. Most GMs don't get a second shot at missing/hitting. On top of that, you have to factor in all the poor FA signings. _________________

And, again, I'm not saying that it should, but if this is what gets viewed, and Henne looks like he can be the guy, it might be enough to save everyone's job for at least a year. _________________

Then you have Ozzie, and sadly, we don't have Ozzie (he drafted Boller and flopped but drafted well elsewhere his teams were still well put together).
Hell, what happens if we are 0-11 right now? Shorts is tackled by a better Indianapolis safety and the Titans punch at least on red zone trip in? Then you look to fire Gene even before the Tennessee game. _________________

I understand that all. I'm just saying that this could be how it gets viewed if Henne gets us to 5-11 or 6-10 and continues to play as he has. Not saying that it should, but rather that it could. _________________

I understand that, but it wouldn't make a difference, I wouldn't think. _________________
