Devin was moved to FS for a period last year, and has made a permanent (according to some) switch this year too.
What is everyone's opinions on Devin's future moving forward, he is a more than adequate CB and I feel he is missing some of the qualities that you would want in a FS.
With an off season to prepare for any eventualities, can you see Devin potentially moving back to CB and perhaps creating a formidable tandem with Talib? Could McCourty replace Talib should he not be resigned? Or will he stay at FS where an off season of preparation at that position could see him progress to a higher level next season?
What are peoples thoughts about his future in terms of position?

| I see/hope Devin staying at FS and really growing into the position week by week. With Talib (I want him resigned if he continues to do what he does in this D) at on CB and Dennard at the other. I want to get a SS either in the lg now or someone from the collegiate level who can really bring the hammer. |

| Depends on what happens in the offseason. I'd think the team is happy to have a guy who can play both reasonably well. |

Pretty much this. I do think if the team can bring in a quality veteran safety [emphasis on 'quality'] they'll feel more comfortable flexing him back to corner.
The one trepidation that might exist is that spending too much time at safety might cause him to lose some of his coverage instincts at corner. You hear of a number of cases of corners making the transition to safety successfully, but vice-versa is quite rare.

Yeah but usually guys go to safety because they can't play CB well enough or they have a perfect skill set for it.
You don't see safety to CB switches often because if a guy could play CB (in terms of speed, athleticism and coverage ability) he'd have started off there. A traditional strong safety would almost never have the skill set to play CB and a free safety who can play CB effectively probably would have been moved to CB in college (or just started off there). |

On a serious note, is Ed Reed actually a viable FA option?
I'd assume he'd want:
a) to retire
b) to play his last few seasons as a Raven
c) get one last big pay-day
d) play for a SB contender
The Pats could only realistically give him one of those things. I'm not sure how willing we'd be to part with big money for an injury plagued (albeit, elite) Safety if he even did want to switch teams which I'm unsure he'd want to do, he seems very loyal to that Franchise.

Reed could regress as an athlete, but as I'm sure you've noticed, the problem in the Pats' secondary hasn't been from any lack of athleticism. It's been communication, route recognition, situational savvy and leadership. Reed would improve all three.
Personally, if given the option of adding Reed, the best combination would be Reed and McCourty at safety [Wilson as the 3rd safety] with Dennard and either Talib, Dowling or some rookie at corner.

Sure, he'd improve all 3 but if he can't get/stay on the field or if he's getting torched in coverage because he's lost another step, he's not going to be a huge improvement. Worth bringing in for his leadership and experience? Absolutely. A "fix" for what ails the Pats? I'm not sold on that.
Ideally, the top Pats DB's next year would be:
CB: Dennard
CB: Veteran addition or Talib (if worth bringing back)
CB: Dowling/rookie
S: McCourty
S: Quality veteran/highly drafted rookie
S: Gregory/Wilson
I'm really not counting on Dowling or Wilson for anything next year, so I'd like to see at least 2 new quality players added. |
