Should Howie Roseman have control over personnel (i.e. be the GM) in 2013?
So should he? If not, who?
Positives for Howie
Excellent cap manager/contract negotiator
Seems to have gained more power over the last few years
Signed a contract extension earlier this year
Negatives for Howie
No player evaluation expertise
Very dodgy draft history
Lack of experience
Will he be able to bring in the free agents?
Might be seen as a bit of a punk by other organisations
Will he continue with Reid's mistakes? _________________

He needs quality staff and evaluators.
He should not be evaluating any talent. _________________

My answer is obviously no (since I made this thread).
Here is the perfect GM for us;
| Quote: | | Tom Gamble/San Francisco 49ers/Director of Player Personnel: In my 14 years of covering the NFL, I don’t recall getting as many strong comments about a potential GM candidate from high-ranking personnel executives and NFL player agents as I’ve received about Gamble in doing research for this piece. In fact, one NFL GM said my list should start with Gamble for the very fact that he’s about as well-rounded of a candidate as you’ll find. |
| Quote: | | He got started in the NFL at a very young age -- literally right out of college -- with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1988. His father, Harry, was the president of the team at that time. And the younger Gamble was around football growing up. His father was a long-time coach (pro and college) and then moved on to become an NFL executive late in his career. |
| Quote: | | Like his father, Tom Gamble is a rarity in NFL scouting departments these days: He not only has extensive pro and college scouting experience, he has experience with contract negations and the salary cap, and even has coaching experience (defensive assistant/quality control coach with the New York Jets for two seasons: 1995-1996) on the NFL side. |
| Quote: | | Now in his 25th NFL season, Gamble has worked for five teams over that time period and has touched just about every possible aspect on the personnel side. He has helped build 10 playoff teams (four with the Eagles, five with the Indianapolis Colts, and one with the 49ers—and very likely another one this season). |
| Quote: | | Before taking a job with the 49ers back in 2005, Gamble worked for seven seasons as a college scout under former Colts GM Bill Polian, who is widely recognized as one of the best personnel evaluators in NFL history. |

So has history with the Eagles, experience as a coach, scout and contract negotiator, worked under imo the best talent evaluator of the last 20 years. _________________

He should be fired like the rest.. he's really ONLY done a good job with the cap and almost nothing else.. meanwhile, he's pretty much blown the last two three drafts during what was supposed to be a "win now" team. I also agree that other organizations likely don't like him and/or view him as a punk. I remember a lot of people talking about how teams felt salty at us after we swooped in and grabbed Nnamdi the way we did. _________________

Why would he be considered a punk by other organisations? _________________

I would give him some sort of VP job where he handles the business side of contracts. _________________

He rubbed them the wrong way and they didn't like his attitude as a new GM. _________________

He have made a ton of deals with a lot of different parties, won't happen if people dont like/trust him _________________

Agreed...he's been good with that...but we need a football guy making the decisions on personnel. _________________

Yeah I like Roseman as part of our front office.
But perhaps GM was a bit more than he could chew (running theme).
'Promote' him to something else. Bring in the guy from New York. _________________

Well there was the Nnamdi signing where we cold played the life out of the Cowboys/Jets.. then there were multiple reports that Roseman was pretty much a shake down artist who teams didn't really wanna deal with and the other report that said multiple GMs thought he was just a young punk who didn't know what he was doing and was only pushing away the other GMs of the league..
All of which are pretty believable/easy to see IMO. _________________

Nice idea Ninja.
Also means Lurie doesn't have to pay out his contract. _________________

I remember those when he first started the job. The rumors haven't been repeated since then and were considered pure conjecture in the first place.
Marky, the last 4 on your negatives list are sketchy, at best. If you don't like him, there's nothing wrong with that. But let's at least be intellectually honest about it. _________________
