One of the things I enjoy about the NFL is observing good management practices that pay off.
I watched in fascination last year as the owner of the Colts, Jim Irsay, demonstrated a series of outstanding and gutsy management calls.
First, he had to make the difficult decision not to bring back Peyton Manning. Given that half the fans wanted Peyton back, that alone was a tough call but Irsay said he wanted to rebuilt his team from scratch and so with the prospect of getting Andrew Luck to build around, that's the direction he went.
Second, he fired his GM, head coaches and many other coaches and brought in a young GM with a vision for the future.
Between Irsay and his new staff, they then traded away or outright terminated many of their core but aging veterans. I read where fans were hanging Irsay in effigy they were so mad. But Irsay told his fans to have patience and that in 3 or 4 years they would be happy with what he was doing.
Well forget the 3 or 4 years stuff. The Colts are 6-5 (versus 1-15 last year) and are at least in the conversation for a wild card berth. And they are doing that while starting 5 rookies on offense!
And then there's Woody Johnson and ummm Mike Tannenbaum and umm Rex Ryan. Ahh wake me in August fellas. _________________ People say my attention strays but they're wrong. HEY LOOK..A ROASTED CHICKEN! |

Woody is a clueless Billionaire that cares more about politics than football.
Tanny is a financial genious and knows nothing about talent.
Rex is a defense mastermind that is a average HC AT BEST.
They are all smart people, but they are all also in wrong positions. |

Yeah. He's better than Woody, but I still wouldn't want him as the owner. _________________

Yeah. He's better than Woody, but I still wouldn't want him as the owner. | It's just really stupid how we keep bringing him up. I mean it's the Jets forum. Woody owns the Jets. Why is this brought up? LOL _________________

Woody is a decent owner mainly because he spends money. If we had a better TALENT EVALUATOR then we would be fine.
Tannebaum isnt that bad as well. He does smart things with the cap to move money around. Our problem is with Terry Bradway and our coaching.
Fire Bradway Rex, Sparano, Pettine. _________________

I think we need a GM that knows what direction he wants to take the team. I feel like Tanny is lost and we need to get rid of Brad & Tanny. _________________

I want Rex gone first and formost. Its as if the guy doesnt even gameplan. It never looks like we even practice during the weak. Hes NOT an AVG. HC, the dude is a terrible HC. _________________

Didn't the jets do something similar to this after 08? Didn't they revamp the team by bringing in a highly regarded qb in the top of the draft(getting rid of a talented hof caliber qb past his prime) and bring in a bright new fiery talented coach? Didn't that team competed for the wc(and actually win it?) didn't that combo make it to back to back afc cgs?
Seems like the primary differences are that the colts got lucky enough to suck in a year with luck coming out, though time will tell if he continues to develop, and a preference to offense for the colts vs a preference of defense for the jets.
So what exactly was the point? _________________

Colts also lucked into having Andrew Luck as the #1 overall pick....that's not so much good ownership as it is good business sense. _________________
