Which player between Aldon Smith, and Patrick Willis is more valuable to making the 49ers defense great?

Obviously a stud pass rusher like Smith is hard to come by and can change a game as he did last night.

While Patrick Willis is one if not the best inside linebacker in the league does he make more of a difference as the heart and sole of that defense then Smith does as a pass rusher?

Finding out this answer would help me as a Browns fan to who I should want in the draft. I would love to have T'eo be the force behind our defense, but does a stud pass rusher like Moore for example make a greater impact?

Patrick Willis by a mile. Heres why, he is an everydown LB. Pretty good in coverage, an elite run stopper and to be quite frank if Patrick wanted be an OLB he would do well in that area.

Aldon Smith. Willis and Bowman are excellent and Brooks is a good player but the Smith brothers make that defense tick. From the deadly T-E stunt the run to their devistating bull rush to their savvy tech part of their games. Those guys feed off each other and make each other better players.

I was thinking the same thing.

What an amazingly talented defense. The only real weakness is covering good slot WR's.

P Willy. He is the QB of the defense. He is a leader. He is the cog that makes this defensive machine run smoothly.

I have to say Aldon. For several reasons although its very tough

Willis has probably the second best ILB in the league right next to him and a very good backup in larry grant. our defense didnt miss a beat when he was out last year when he was out for a few games - but the drop off between aldon and clark haggans and dobbs is significant. there is a huge difference in our pass rush when aldon isnt in the game.

Although I will say willis is one of our leaders on D who really sets the standard for work ethic etc etc so its really really hard to pick against him. Aldon is just a special talent with unlimited potential.

Dont get me wrong tho, I love pat and I think he is the best ILB in the league who has absolutely no flaws in his game. our D is better when he is on the field and I hope he retires a niner.

I also agree that Jsmith is probably the biggest reason we have the best defense in the league. the man fights through double teams like no other. Motor that never stops. Its gonna be a sad day when he retires.

This defense is just unreal. you rarely see us miss tackles or make mental mistakes. We are still very young too and should be around for a while. The only place we really need to add youth is DL.

San Fran is stubborn in their defensive schemes. Even against teams with outstanding slots, we'd rather stay in our base packages or man up on the slot. Most decent slots can beat man coverage rather easily, but we refuse to game plan for guys like Victor Cruz and Percy Harvin.
