This is like straight out of a sci-fi movie, really cutting edge stuff, the link and a small quote from the article are below. They're planning on using it to make windshields and things of that nature, this could be a huge asset for protecting our soldiers and police forces.
| Quote: | Researchers at a Rice University lab are researching technology that that could potentially stop a 9-millimeter bullet and seal the entryway behind it - an advance that may have huge implications for ballistic protection for soldiers, as well as other uses.
During tests, the researchers were able to shoot tiny glass beads at the material, which effectively stopped bullets in their paths. |

Pretty cool ... Dont like the idea of a windshield though. Imagine that intact ... probably glass sharp flying through the air? Doesnt seem like a good outcome for those on the opposite end of it.
I would like to see it made into gear for our soldiers help to keep them safer.
This stuff would be good for homes down in Florida/other hurricane heavy areas where I could see it mostly being used. _________________

Well it looks like a gelly like material and in the picture the bullets just stopped right in the center of it, they'd likely but that in the glass and bullets would just get stuck on the inside of the windshield, it could also be useful for vest and helmets. Endless possibilities. _________________

9mms really aren't all that powerful. They'll need to see how it performs against smaller (diameter and weight) rounds with a higher velocity. Most soldiers aren't getting shot at with 9mms.
Kinda like how bullet proof vest can stop most pistol rounds, but rifle rounds will go straight through them.
I do like the idea of using it as a window in say a cockpit, or bank, or something like that. Or the idea above me to use it as windows in a hurricane area, but it's probably too expensive for that. _________________

I dont see how its a possibility (yet) for them to make it into a windshield ... looks like it would distort what you're looking at quite a bit from inside the car. Most likely they will improve on it and change it for the better.
But Id much rather have it on my house than on my car. Hopefully in the near future we can have it on both _________________

Riot shield? I think that's a pretty practical use, based on what I know. _________________

Depending on how heavy the material is (<-- kinda stupid) it would definitely be a practical material ... even though riot shields are pretty good right now _________________

Riot shields aren't bullet proof. Some of them are bullet resistant, but that's still a minority.
Like you said though, it would totally depend on the weight. _________________

Judging by the thickness of it, it looks pretty light. That guys holding a hand sized chunk with no issues _________________

A whole riot shield made out of that material would be bad butt
I would totally make a captain america shield out of it _________________

This might be a totally absurd question, but...why wouldn't they surround an airplane with this kind of stuff or something?
When the thing crashed, it would remain entirely in tact, no?
