There are 3 parts to a football team: O, D, and ST. For this discussion the 3 parts are offense, defense, and QB.

Since Montana left we have made the playoffs 5 times, 4 times we have hosted, and 3 times we were 13-3, yet we haven't won a game (I partly fault the "bye" playoff system, but this makes our problem more glaring and hopefully more likely to get fixed). We have held teams to 10 and 14 points and lost and scored 31 points and lost...all at Arrowhead. We didn't play any of those games with the better QB.

We need a GM who will make it a priority to:
1. Properly evaluate and get a franchise QB
2. maintain a high caliber defense
3. fill in the rest of the offense

...in that order, as it's not always possible to be good in every aspect. Since Joe left our GM's have failed to field even one team that was ranked in the top half of the league in offense, defense, as well as a top half of the league QB. 05 comes close...QB and offense were givens, but the D was 25th in total D and 16th in scoring D, probly because they forced 31 turnovers...but this team, while deserving, didn't even make the playoffs.

So, Joe retires in '94, the D is fine. We clearly need a QB and then some offensive playmakers. Bono was already the backup (McCarthy was the QB coach). At first take, maybe you don't blame Carl, he had success with the last 49er QB and there were no QB's at their spot in the draft. Rich Gannon was brought in as the backup who had some success starting in Minnesota. They draft Jenkins and Vanover.

So they go 13-3 with Bono as a game manager, but lose to an underwhelming Colts team 10-7. Bono throws 3 picks, one season was fine, but he's old and clearly not the answer. Not much at QB in the draft and they go Defense getting Woods, Tongue, Browning, and Edwards....and Joe Horn. That's fine since in '94 they drafted Hill, Bennett, Dawson, and Penn with their 1st 4 picks...those guys just didn't turn out very good....although I woulda liked to see a WR in one of the 1st two instead of the last two.

They move ahead with Bono and with a sputtering offense fail to make the playoffs at 9-7. So Carl makes some moves drafting Gonzalez and Lockett, acquiring Rison and...Elvis. Why? Gannon was on the roster and had looked good in a few starts and had success starting in the past. Grbac was an 8th round pick of the 49ers who was coming off an 8 TD 10 INT season as a backup. He could be a good passer, but had ZERO intangibles. Why not give Gannon a chance?

Of course we all know what happened from there, they rode Grbac thru 2000 and let Gannon walk to the Raiders to become a star in '99. This isn't exactly neglect, but it's poor evaluation as well as inability/indifference to trade up in the draft.

Skip ahead to Vermeil in 2001, the Chiefs were coming off a strong offensive season while being below average on D. Grbac signed with Bal in FA, so they needed QB, a feature RB, and defense. Signing Holmes and Green was a great start, now they needed some D in the draft. They had no 1st or 2nd round picks, but nabbed Eric Downing and Monty Beisel. Vermeils 1st year they struggled at 6-10...the defense was bad while the offense was pretty good, just turnover prone. Peterson went D with Sims, Eddie Freeman, and Fujita....the poor drafting continues but atleast he's picking the right side of the ball.

The offense explodes to become the best in the league in '02 with fewer TO's and the addition of Roaf, but the D is near the bottom. Priest was injured the final two games and his status was uncertain. So along with some defense at the top, you probly wanna take a RB in the 4th or 5th just in case. Instead we trade down and take LJ Rolling Eyes CB was our weakest spot, Nmadi Asomugha went a few spots after LJ to Oak.

During these next few years of offensive brilliance, the trend continued with guys like Omaar Easy, Kris Wilson, Sami Parker, Colquitt in rd 3, Craphonso Thorpe being taken fairly high in the draft when we just needed D, D, and more D. Larry Foote, Darnell Dockett, Nathan Vasher, Kerry Rhodes, and Trent Cole are defensive guys taken soon after those 4 players. Peterson had shown he's not afraid to take all defense as he had in '96 when they were already good. It didn't help drafting Junior Saavi.

Obviously we wouldn't have drafted all these guys, but a defense like this in '05 was possible:

RDE-Allen
DT-Dockett
DT-Sims
LDE-Cole

SLB-Foote
MLB-Mitchell
WLB-DJ

CB-Scrabble
CB-Vasher
S-Wesley
S-Rhodes

Why the neglect? Soon, we were a team with holes all over and that's when we started rebuilding the roster with the '07 and '08 drafts. Which brought us Pioli in '09 and his neglect of QB. When will it end?

Obviously you can't hit on every pick and Carl had a pretty bad stretch in the early 2000s, but you can certainly fault him for the positions he drafted and his evaluation of the QB position with Gannon on the roster. Pioli's neglect/QB evaluation troubles are well documented. It's just so irritating to have GM's who get rid of guys like Gannon/Thigpen at the first hint of them having success for retreads from highly successful franchises...who by the way are not successful because they trade for other teams backups. And for crying out loud, when your offense is ranked 1st and your defense is ranked last, use some common sense and draft D in the 1st 4 rounds until you're atleast respectable.

This probly isn't a "discussion" type thread, but with us needing a new GM and all the failings we've seen, I wanted to go back and look at the history of addressing needs and put down my thots along the way....so that's all it really is.
