It seems that the best candidate for such a project would be Mars, because it apparently has a somewhat habitable environment suited for humans- at least more so than our Moon.
Will we send humans to Mars anytime soon? And if so, can we expect a viable space colony to be built there? And if not Mars, any other candidates for Space Colonization?
^One picture of Mars from the Curiosity Rover, and it could definitely fool me into thinking it was a picture of Earth. _________________ -Not taking this off until the 49ers win #6 |

Probably say around 2200 ... but thats only if our space program/ science funding gets an increase. And it would be no where close to what we have here on earth.
That or if something catastrophic happens may jump start it but I doubt anyone would seriously choose to live on Mars over earth unless they were forced to. _________________

I'm an idiot but... why would a rock that's farther from us be more habitable(sp?) than a rock closer to us? _________________

Smaller/ The land is extremely abrasive also making it hard to build on
Plus there are so many unknown factors about over exposure to 1/6th of earths weight possibly causing our life spans to be shorter because of muscle/bone density loss. _________________

Never had a person on Mars ... we have had people on the moon (definitely)
Not that I think it would make much of a difference if we had someone land there or not ... colonization wise of course _________________

But yeah, I don't think we colonize either one. _________________

I think if we ever do, it'll be pretty far into the future. First of all, to even colonize anything, you have to have infrastructure set up well in advance. Seeing as we haven't even had a person set foot on Mars yet, just that small step will still take a good while. Then all of the research, planning, sending people/supplies to even build the very first thing on the planets, make it sustainable for breathing, etc. Then, of course, factor in people who would want to move somewhere like that, where a leak could cause them death, with nothing to do on the planet, etc... It's just not really all that viable.
If they wanted to start colonizing an area that is not currently hospitable, that you have to overcome many challenges to provide the resources for sustained life, etc -- they'd just start moving people to the big deserts we have all over the Earth. Same concepts, but oxygen supply is already there, and it takes just a tad bit less time to get supplies there than it does Mars _________________

Not for a while, Space Radiation will prevent us from colonising until we can figure out a way to remove the effects of Radiation _________________ Officially endorsed by Jon Dorenbos
