What I'm confused about is why did Akiem Hicks do to lose his job? Sedrick Ellis started this week and played way more after Hicks had a great game last week.
Did you watch the game last week? Ellis played a ton. We benched/deactivated Bunkley because the Broncos run a lot of 3 WR sets and our D wanted to play nickleback most of the game. Bunkley is a run defender and they didn't feel he would be a big use that game, so Hicks and Ellis started. Ellis didn't get benched last week, Bunkley did.
Ah that's correct. The point still stands, Hicks is playing way better than Ellis.
Yes I totally agree he should start, hopefully the coaches believe the same soon
He will continue to develop into that starting role but you have to remember, Spags rotates his d-line constantly. He said before that he has 8 starting d-lineman. It dosent matter who starts the first snap... all these d-lineman are basically on kinda a snap count in spags scheme. He wants to generate all his pressure upfront and to do it he tries to keep his d-lineman fresh and to do that he rotates often.
Even if Hicks is starting... he's still gonna see almost the same amount of plays as the rest. _________________
This is a new NFL... Only 3 areas need be concerned with!
2. Red zone defense
3. 3rd down eff
Forget the yards... you get top 10 in those 3 catogries on defense and this team is a ledgit superbowl contender.
The issue with that is 2 things:
1.) We're hoping more teams go 0-fer in the RZ. We're giving up yards far too easily. Moving the ball on us isn't as hard as it could be. Eventually if this continues we'll find a team who makes us pay for our mistakes. You can't give teams as much opportunity to score as we are.
2.) We were top-10 or top-15 last year under GW in RZ and 3rd down D aswell. We know how that ended.
This D improved last game, but there is no way you can continue to give up 500 yards a game to the opposing team and hope to be competent enough to win. That requires Brees and the offense to continue to be near perfect game in and game out. We need the D to form some resemblance of support to this team rather than being "the other guys on the field while the offense rests" _________________
