Thought this was really great. Especially for Football programs at the high school and DIAA Level.
| Quote: | A small mechanical sensor he designed could eventually become a low-cost, mass-produced device that fits on the front of helmets and releases a liquid that is visible from the sidelines, warning coaches and trainers that a player should be checked for a possible head injury.
The idea won Benedict, now 15, the top prize in the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge last year. He was named “American’s Top Young Scientist,” earned a visit to the White House and won $25,000, most of which he’s putting away for college. |

I agree... not every hard hit to the head leads to a concussion. _________________ Stay low boys.... keep those feet moving!

It's nice to get ideas flowing, though. Still, nice work by this kid. _________________

If I had to guess its a pressure plate that releases a liquid if a player gets hit in the head with so many pounds of force. Cool idea that will probably result in a lot of false alarms but a good starting point for an effective system to help detect concussion force hits. _________________

You wanna know how you can tell if someone gets a concussion. They are going to be woozy and out of it. You don't need a sensor to tell if someone is concussed. Maybe that's just the paramedic coming out in me. The problem is when you send them back out to play or the player thinks he can fight through it. _________________

I like it.
But concussions are seldom just a big hit. It's the accumulated hits from practices and games. Season after season. _________________ "I have to keep playing so people over 40 will have somebody to root for on Sunday afternoons." George Blanda who played until he was 46 |

Kinda like this would you say? http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-game-highlights/09000d5d81a810f4/Bradley-stumbles-after-concussion
And 4 plays latter he's in the game. Kolb was also concussed and got back in the game. The trainer says it was accidental, but Philly has had plenty more accidents since.
But this "pack" could alert neutral NFL guys and stop some of these trainers that never seem to see concussion and force players to prove they are alright to go back in. Sure, there'll be false alarms, but it seems worth it to me.
And kudos to the kid, really cool stuff. |

I'd rather have 10 false alarms a game then 1 non-treated concussion. _________________

| scar988 wrote: | | I'd rather have 10 false alarms a game then 1 non-treated concussion. | It would just be an early warning system anyway, just a "hey let's do the tests and make sure everything is ok" type deal. Nothing is saying that just b/c the sensor is tripped means the player can't return to the game.
And to the guy who said people look woozy whenever they have a concussion, tell that to the emts who treated my niece after her car accident when she showed no symptoms until later in the day. _________________

BINGO!
and thats where we should stand. The NFL wants to make a big deal out of "He has a concussion. He leaves the game", and yet already we've seen a couple guys come back in after a few plays
Even if his system starts off ineffective, its a small step closer to whats much needed in player safety.
kudos to him. Smart kid! _________________
