Nnamdi Asomugha vs. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie
Both cornerbacks arrived for the start of the 2011 season. Since then both had their highs and their lows. Asomugha is contracted till $15.3m while Rodgers-Cromartie is a free agent. Asomugha has $4m of guaranteed money remaining on his contract.
Currently, we are $15m over the cap for next year (though our spare space this year is rolled over - which results in cap space of around $7m).
It is likely that DRC will want a contract along the line of Brandon Carr (5 years, $50m), which given those numbers, we are unlikely to be able to afford (unless we make further cuts).
So the question is simple, if you can choose one CB for next year, who would it be?
Asomugha Stats
22 games started
63 total tackles
12 passes defended
4 interceptions
Rodgers-Cromartie Stats
10 games started
46 total tackles
1 sack
15 passes defended
3 interceptions
Note: I know it's likely we'll cut Vick, Babin etc to give us cap room, but I think it's a good conversation piece on our CB play _________________

Just to start the conversation, I'd choose DRC.
While I think Asomugha is great, he is over 30, which means he will decline in play.
Reid used to never sign anyone over 30, but he splurted it all out in the 2011 season, and well, it hasn't work. _________________

DRC, age is the primary reason. _________________

DRC only because of age. I think Nnamdi is better though. _________________

DRC.
I feel he has struggled as well (both players are affected by a lack of pressure on opposing QBs) but he is the younger player, and that alone makes this decision easy. _________________

Although it pains me to say, it would be DRC as of right now.
I will always like Nnamdi, but too many factors lean toward DRC here. _________________

DRC age to ceiling. He still has a huge upside, at times when he tunes it in, you can see why he was so coveted coming out, he could be really special. He has rare foot speed for his height and length as well as ability to press hard at the LOS or back pedal leap to attack the ball with the best of them.
If he was a Steeler, 49'er, Raven with the structure and discipline of those defenses and coaching personnel, he would be a ALL PRO easily. _________________

I'd say Nnamdi is the better corner by a decent amount, but I'd easily take DRC here due to age and potential. DRC is one of the most athletic corners in the NFL and one of fastest players in the league, he then has a big CB frame. If he can improve technique he could be a top 5 corner easily. _________________

True, but he does lack some consistency. He's not worth $10M per year IMO, which is around top 5-10 CB money. _________________

DRC.
Basically because of age and potential. The sky remains the limit for DRC, who is arguably the game's most athletic corner. He's also having a pro-bowl calibre season to boot, and ranks 2nd amongst ALL corners in opposition QBR. Both Nnamdi and DRC are playing extremely well for the most part, but right now the latter has the better metrics given the former's poor performance over the weekend.
I'd franchise him and then see if we can come to a long-term agreement. I don't foresee him going anywhere this off-season.
Cap space won't be a problem because Vick, Bell, etc. will likely be cut. _________________
