The Vikings, on the Tuesday off-day for players, often conduct tryouts for players and today they worked out a free agent punter, Brian Stahovich, a former San Diego State punter who was with the Colts during the preseason. Vikings punter Chris Kluwe had a rough game in Thursday's loss to Tampa Bay, but it is unlikely the Vikings have any intention of making a move.

Stahovich was signed by the Colts in April as an undrafted free agent. He did not have any punts with Indianapolis. He is a rookie from San Diego State, where he averaged 42.9 yards per punt.
Vikings punter Chris Kluwe is averaging 43.8 yards on 37 punts this season.

a little motivation to inspire Kluwe regaining his focus, perhaps...? _________________

I think Kluwe and this team knows we need him to step up.
Allthough we'd all rather not see the punter at all during gameday, given his situation, he needs to make a play when called upon.
Realistically, I think its too early to cut our ties with him. _________________

particularly for a rookie punter who's averaged less yards per punt in college than Kluwe has during his worst year in the pros. _________________

Blair Walsh was a 60% kicker as a senior, he's doing pretty well.
Not that I expect the team to get rid of Kluwe just yet. _________________

field goal percentage and average punt distance seem to be different stats entirely. but maybe not. _________________

This does sound like a shot across the bow.
Leslie Frazier is one of those coaches who will never criticize a player publicly. He'll just quietly replace the guy when the opportunity presents itself.
I believe that Kluwe, Kevin Williams and Antoine Winfield are the only players left over from the Mike Tice era. _________________

shot across the bow... Mike Tice...
too many Love Boat memories...
and let's keep in mind at least this year that Spielman makes personnel decisions, Frazier makes coaching decisions. _________________

It's typical for a team, when a punter has a bad game, to bring in someone just to scare him a little bit. I don't take it very seriously. It's one of those moments where it's just to put Kluwe on notice that we need you to do better.

Yes, but Spielman would have no reason to work out a marginally talented punter unless Kluwe was hurt or Frazier was looking to send Kluwe a message. _________________

| I like Kluwe, but he's 27th in the league in punting. It seems like he could be upgraded. |

What I'm trying to say is that you can't always use college performance when judging kickers or punters, as coaching or technique can be an important issue. _________________

I think Kluwe has gotten a little complacent here. This could spark a fire under his arse and getting him playing better. _________________ Welcome to Minnesota, Greg Jennings.

I know Childress did this same thing at least once with Kluwe. It worked last time. _________________

Punting stats are goofy. Since Frazier punts inside the other teams territory a lot, how do we judge distance? I am not saying he is great, but a ton of stuff goes into gross and net yards outside of the punters control. _________________ Wins are a team stat, not a QB stat |
