| Man 4th in the nfl in tackles! I had a guy at the bar tell me beason was way better. Beason is way faster and a better athlete but the #'s don't lie. Luke is a monster when it comes to being in the right place at the right time. What do you guys thing we should do with beason? He is 1b tp 1a to me im not trying to put him down at all. Just wondering what you guys think his future on this team? |

Beason will come back this next season back to form. It takes quite a while to recover from an achilles injury, and with the tweak in his hamstring and the subsequent IR trip he now has enough time to fully recover 100% so that the achillies (and the hamstring for that matter) isn't an issue. Both of these guys are smart and athletic players. We will be able to make it work with them both on the field, and when that happens...watch out. _________________

beason will need to take a paycut because 5/50 for a 4-3 OLB is pretty terrible. but i'd love to keep him and keek as the 3 down backers with davis and anderson rotating. or maybe we'll dump anderson (he is also making too much) and just keep TD.
who knows what the new regime will want to do... _________________

We are paying Anderson just over 4M per year and he's been our most consistent LB over the past 4 years. He's a bargain and one that we should keep.
Decisions will need to be made as we have a lot of money tied up in LBs. My preference would be to let Thomas Davis walk and restructure Beason somewhere between what he's making now and where James Anderson is making. Somewhere around the 30-35M range with incentives if he comes back to the level he was at before. _________________

I say we switch to a 3-4 but that might be too much of a shell shock for this defense _________________

Actually as much as I love Beason, and in his prime he is 1b to Patrick Willis I do think Keuchly could be better than him. Keuchly is faster and has super natural instincts for the football. Dan Morgan comes to mind. That said he doesn't have the beast mode that Beason has but both of them are incredibly intelligent players and I would love nothing more to see them on the field together next season.
You aren't going to out smart Beason and Keuchly together on the field. You are talking about having two potential top 5 MLB's on the field together. I think they will both play MLB next season and rotate the different positions. Both Beason and Luke are the type of guys that are going to be best at whatever position they play.
If our guys were healthy we really do have the best LB core in the game, bar none. All this defense needs is a DT for the future and a natural FS with good instincts. By the way if Luke started the season at MLB he would lead the league in tackles by a lot. |

About the only way I see a 3-4 working for us is something like:
Hardy - Star - Edwards
Johnson - Kuechly - Anderson - Alexander
Moving so many players to a completely new scheme fit worries me. _________________

No way I want TD walking, he means so much to this organization. I'll say we keep all 4. _________________

Yeah I really don't see it working out unless they just occasional speed packages. I think Hardy could play a 3-4 OLB but I don't think Johnson or Alexander have that kind of athletic ability. They are more strength and workhorse players. |

We don't have (starting caliber) OLB's for that, LB's other than Kuechly aren't really great fits for ILB, Johnson/Hardy are okay as the DE's, but we'd need another big guy there for run situations.
Right now it would be:
Hardy-[Pass]-Johnson
Alexander-Anderson-Kuechly-Applewhite/Keiser
And I hate to always be negative nancy (well, not really), but Kuechly gets a lot more praise than I would give based on his play. Tackles are a poor stat for defenders. Great linebackers usually do rack up a lot of tackles, but a lot of tackles doesn't make you a great linebacker. _________________

Kuechly has indeed been one of the few bright spots in this otherwise horrible defense. Our safetys are absolute garbage and wouldn't start on any other team. _________________
