I’ve been thinking a lot about options this team has to try to improve this roster to a point on defense to where a post season/wildcard run is possible. While this defense as a whole still has major problems across the board we all know that a better pass rush always takes pressure off of every position behind the front four. Your secondary seems to improve a lil bit, you start getting more forced turnovers and you linebackers always look to play more loose and aggressive.

In the end… this is exactly the improvement likely needed to make this a realistic run.

How to do it?

TRADE: RB CHRIS IVORY & DE TURK MCBRIDE TO LIONS FOR DE LAWERENCE JACKSON & 5TH ROUND DRAFT PICK.
This trade would allow the Saints to add a quality pass rusher who is buried on the Lions depth chart and add an additional draft pick next offseason and freeing a roster spot for another defensive player on the roster with the removal of Ivory who we don’t use anyway. The Lions land a former member of their team in McBride who could replace Jackson at the bottom of their depth chart as well as improving a position of need with a quality player in Ivory.

TRADE: DT SEDRICK ELLIS & OT CHARLES BROWN TO EAGLES FOR CULLEN JENKINS & 2ND ROUND DRAFT PICK
This trade would allow the Saints to land a veteran player that they were very high on a few years back in Jenkins that has regressed this season. The Saints will not likely bring back Ellis next season so moving him now would be wise to allow Hicks to receive more playing time. Brown has been a disappointment thus far for the Saints but the Eagles are in dire need of offensive line help and Andy Reid is desperate to win this season so giving up a 2nd rounder in this deal to get it done is not that farfetched.

PREMOTE: DE BRAYLON BROUGHTON & MARCEL JONES FROM THE PRATICE SQUAD TO ACTIVE ROSTER
At 6’6” 280 lbs and terrific athletic ability, the Saints kept this guy around for a reason. With the physical skill set Broughton possesses he would be much more helpful to this team as the final D-lineman on the active roster. Yes the undrafted rookie is extremely raw but this is arguably the worst defense in the league and could use an influx of youth and athleticism. Broughton should be tossed into the fire and take his lumps this season to see exactly what we have in him. With a player of his size and strength he could develop into a terror as an interior/exterior rusher and it would be a shame if some other team were to sign him away and we find out the hard way.

Do any of us honestly feel this defense will get worst by bringing him up?

As far as Jones, He would simply replace Charles spot as the teams swing tackle in the rotation. The Saints are said to be high on him and if Brown isn’t ready to beat out Strief yet then it’s time to move on.

SADLY NONE OF THIS (OR ANY TRADES WHATS SO EVER) WILL OCCUR…
I doubt that the Saints will make ANY moves without Loomis or Payton in the building. The trade deadline is actually later this season which ends after the 8th week of the season but that’s contently happens to be at the same time Mickey Loomis suspension will be over not allowing him to make the necessary moves needed. I’m quite sure this was taken into account when Loomis’s suspension was handed out making it more and more likely that this season will continue to have its ups and downs but undoubtedly ending the way the NFL wants it to for the Saints.

We would be robbing the eagles blind with that trade Very Happy

Some free agents we should look at this offseason:

Ricky Jean-Francois, NT SF - should be surplus to there requirements and will add good depth if we cut Ellis

James Hall - a NO native who should come cheap at 35 and add much needed pass rushing depth to our front 4

No way. No how. Lol. Not even remotely realistic, and that's why it won't happen.

Also, why would the lions trade for a player they let walk in free agency?

My top 2013 free agent list...

1. DE Cliff Avril, Lions
2. DT Randy Starks, Dolphins
3. DE Michael Johnson, Bengals
4. FS Jairus Byrd, Bills
5. CB Brandon Cox, Jaguars
6. DE Michael Bennett, Buccaneers
7. LB Daryl Smith, Jaguars
8. CB Mike Jenkins, Cowboys
9. DT Nenry Melton, Bears
10. CB Sam Shields, Packers
10.

I know this one was pretty unrealistic, but the Lions did actually try to retain McBride but the Saints out bid them.
