Could have posted this in the Chargers GDT, yet thought that it deserves its own thread as a potential change definately bears further implications for the season. Not sure what to think of this if this is indeed not only a rumor. At this point, Brooking is all brains and recognition but lacks the athleticism whereas Mays is all athleticism and no brains (to put it pointedly). Both suck in coverage, though. Is Brooking over Mays an upgrade or the same old same old? _________________

God have mercy. At least Mays was decent against the run. _________________

This is just further evidence that Denver needs to draft a MLB who can take over the position.
If it happens, I would puke but imagine Manti Te'o manning the middle for that defense. That would be dirty. Straight savage. _________________

Meh, who our MLB in our base package isn't the real issue here; its who is playing in our Nickel. I wonder if this means Brooking is replacing Mays in the Nickel? _________________ 20 TIMES, 20 TIMES MAN UNITTTTTEEDDD

I'd have to imagine that's what it means. I still think before this year is over we're gonna see Irving in there at MLB just to see what he can do. _________________

Hmmm.. lets see. One knows where the plays going but can't get there. The other can get there, just doesn't know where "there" is. |

I prefer Brooking to start over Mays. I always have preferred instinctual MLBers.
How is Brooking in coverage though? From what I've seen he's much better than Mays in coverage and is actually decent in zone. He also rarely "guesses" which hole the RB is going through which seemed like a regular occurrence with Mays. Now in no way am I saying Brooking is a great MLB or even very good MLB. I do think he will make this defense better than it was with Mays basically due to the fact that he won't be caught out of position or missing gaps like Mays has done so often this year. _________________ Broncos-Bulls-Cubs-CU-Blackhawks |

Yeah.
Hes actually getting some good PT. Still not worth starting in my opinion. _________________

Agreed, he's suitable depth for now and has looked good. Not sure if I'd thrust him in to a starting role. I think Steven Johnson could be an interesting tryout at the position though... _________________

I'm not sure what to make of this move. Both have their respective strengths and weaknesses. Neither is a LB who can play well in space but Brooking at least has superior instincts and play recognition.
The problem, as lomax pointed out, is not so much on first and second down as it is when we go to the nickel package. Last year our nickel LBs were WW and DJ - two LBs who can cover lots of ground.
We all knew the MIKE spot in our defense was a weakness last year and I cannot understand why Elway and Fox didn't make more of an effort to improve it this offseason. I suppose they were hoping Nate Irving would develop...? Either way, it's a hole on our defense that needs to be fixed this next offseason. _________________ big_palooka:
