It's like they got so caught up in the fact that MJD is our best player and tried to run an offense that goes through him. This team needs to be running an offense similar to what we saw in 2007, with a bit more passing and more downfield throws. But that's what we need. _________________

Blaine Gabbert wasn't good in the spread. Chase Daniels had much better production in college on that team. Gabbert was drafted highly because he projected well into a pro offense, not to be a Colt McCoy dink and dunk type QB.
Gabbert is better throwing it down field than he is at short and intermediate passes. Most of his terribly inaccurate passes are the short ones that he constantly throws behind people.
When it comes to Blackmon, this isn't the big 12. Teams are just going to let you jog 5 yards, catch a ball uncontested, and still not be close to tackling him. The more he comes along the more he'll contribute. Also he only needs 76 more yards to beat the great rookie year of Reggie Williams, so it's not the end of the world. _________________

Their conservative approach in the passing game had nothing to do with MJD or thinking the offense "had to go through him". It had everything to do with the coaches wanting to ease Gabbert into being a starting QB. Roethlisberger wasn't throwing tons of passes early in his career, but by his 3rd or 4th year he was comfortable and able to eventually put the offense on his back. Mark Sanchez, not so much.
Jennings got as many carries against Oakland, if not more, than MJD would of had. The rushing offense didn't change just how effective we are at it. And if anything, the Jags never featured MJD enough in passing plays in the past when they should have been. It seems like MJD is told every pass play to block, then stand around the LOS as a backup option.
They haven't been looking for creative ways to get the ball to our RBs and TEs enough, when that could be a great help to Gabbert. Keeping them in to block a lot means Gabbert has to throw a lot of short and intermediate passes to WRs, when those would be riskier throws.
The 07 offense was a run first offense that knew who they were. They physically imposed the run game on almost every team we faced with great success, then Garrard would hit an open Wr on a play action pass. I don't recall many 49 pass attempt games back then. The 49ers current offense reminds me of the Jags 07 offense. I think we would need more physical players at RT, RG, and LG to go back to being that team. _________________
