|
|
|
| Quote: | Former Oakland Raiders wide receiver and Pro Football Hall of Fame finalist Tim Brown blames ex-Raiders coach Bill Callahan for the team's embarrassing 48-21 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl XXXVII.
Speaking on Sirius XM NFL Radio this past Saturday, Brown speculated that Callahan might have changed the team's game plan the Friday before the game because he was friends with Buccaneers coach Jon Gruden and "hated" the Raiders. (Gruden had coached the Raiders before taking the Bucs job the prior offseason.)
"We get our game plan for victory on Monday, and the game plan says we're gonna run the ball," Brown said. "We averaged 340 (pounds) on the offensive line, they averaged 280 (on the defensive line). We're all happy with that, everybody is excited." |

Also here's Chris Mortensen's tweets with quotes from FB Jon Ritchie
Chris Mortensen @mortreport
Former Raiders FB Jon Ritchie texts: "I've said it for years. What we practiced heavily during the week is not what we ran in (SB XXXVII)"
Chris Mortensen @mortreport
Ritchie (con'd): "Could have been due to Barrett (Robbins) absence. It was never explained to me." Jon mentioned he's said it several times.
Chris Mortensen @mortreport
Jon Ritche says he mentioned discrepancy between practice & play-calling on ESPN's First Take every year "we talked about the Super Bowl."
Chris Mortensen @mortreport
Anonymous Raiders' starter says there was always dysfunction but didn't support Brown's version. "Bill wanted to kick (Gruden's) [inappropriate/removed]."
Do you believe that Callahan sabotaged the game? _________________

No. I don't believe that.
1) What does Callahan have to gain? He has far more to gain by winning that game, then he can leave the Raiders and take any job he wants really.
2) This points to him being a poor coach who overthought the gameplan rather than being some evil genius. Maybe he thought the Bucs knew what was coming, so he made some last minute changes.
3) Wasn't Rich Gannon the NFL MVP that year? So it's sabotage to not run the ball? _________________

I won't be sorry when the Ravens finish 8-8. |

| Sounds more like Al Davis got wind of what the gameplan was and said "NOT IN MY SUPERBOWL. THROW IT DEEP RUNNING IS FOR SUCKERS." |

Yeah. Exactly. I don't think planning to run the whole time is a great game plan against one of the greatest defences in NFL history.
Funny we have Callahan and Kiffin + Rod in the same staff now. Ironic _________________

Heard about this on the radio this morning, and I think that's a ludicrous accusation. Do they realize that sabotaging the biggest game of any coach's career could damage their ability to make millions and millions of more dollars down the line?
Completely ridiculous assumption here. Makes me sick to a certain extent, and I don't even have any affinity for the Raiders in any way. _________________

Coaching was far from their only problem in that game. Brown had 1 catch that game, way to perform. _________________

| Really? I guess being down 20-3 at halftime and have a RB averaging less than 2 yards per attempt wouldn't make a coach abandon the run unless he was planning to sabotage his teams chance of winning. |

Seriously, the Bucs were simply the better team. Excuses can apply to Super Bowls that were actually close, but I'm sick of hearing about the shenanigans behind this one. _________________

Pretty laughable. Throw a chance to help your career tremendously by winning a Super Bowl, just so your friend can win one?
They got whuuped, nothing else to it. _________________

This is honestly the most likely case, if it is indeed true that what they practiced was different from what they actually did in the game. _________________

I thought this mystery had already been solved.
The Raiders changed NOTHING on offense after Gruden left.. 1 year removed, what are the odds the Raiders face the Bucs in the Super Bowl.
Gruden knew the plays, formations, signals, everything the Raiders were doing, he knew.. it made a pretty easy game from the Bucs defensive standpoint. no conspiracy.. just poor planning on the Raiders side. |
