Found this article which an opposing GM pretty much bashes the Lions...that being said I have a tough time really disputing it.
http://sports.yahoo.com/news/lions-problems-much-deeper-awful-142724724--nfl.html
| Quote: | | They are a one-dimensional offensive team that if the quarterback (Matthew Stafford) is not on, people are figuring it out. If you take (WR Calvin) Johnson out of the game (one TD through four games, compared to eight TDs at the same stage last season), who else do they have that can beat you? |
| Quote: | | “A big problem (in Week Four) was that their leaders were not leading by example. Calvin Johnson and Brandon Pettigrew were uncharacteristically making drops. (DT Ndamukong) Suh disappeared.” |
| Quote: | | “Suh belongs on the All-Hype team. (DE Cliff) Avril is not that good — put on any game and you can watch him get blocked time and time again. Corey Willliams is solid, but nothing that wows you or makes you wonder how you are going to block him. The other guy (DE Kyle Vanden Bosch) is a try-hard guy getting up in years that does not really threaten you. For as much as people talk about that D-line and all its depth, where are all the players? |
Also goes on to say Mayhew and Schwartz are both overrated as well. _________________

It is a rival GM. He sounds a bit bitter. Some points are made that make sense but some comments are really out there too. _________________

The garbage sacks comment on Suh was bigger loss of words. _________________

| I think we are a couple of years away from getting back to the playoffs on a consistent basis. We need to get younger and better at a number of positions. |

Actually it's a crock. Lions are 3rd in Offense and 9th in defense. They have allowed 28 points to Special Teams which is what is killing us.
Stafford has been flat, no running game and we have had bad drops yet we are 3rd in offense? Nice. _________________

Panicked last minute drives generate yardage. The problem is that they generally don't move the ball until the second half of the third quarter. _________________

He's not totally off base, it seems pretty clear that this team is not as good as its 10-6 record last year made everyone think. However he definitely goes overboard on many of his comments. I mean yeah, if Stafford and Calvin aren't on their game, this team will struggle to win. But you could say that about any QB or number 1 WR in the league.
And Im not sure what he meant by Suh's "garbage sacks." 10 sacks as a DT is pretty darn impressive no matter how they come. |

I've been saying that they're at least 2 more off seasons away from being competitive on a regular basis with the better teams in the league for a while now. They have zero depth across the board except maybe at WR/DL (but even they aren't playing very good), and they need to fill several major holes throughout the defense (and a couple upgrades on the offensive side of the ball as well). Another solid FA along with a draft that addresses some of the needs rather than BPA depth, followed by another solid FA (maybe then going after a bigger impact name in FA depending on the cap/roster) and another draft and things should be better. Although, that all depends on current roster turnover and whether or not this coaching staff makes it that long. _________________

That's a big flaw in the numbers. It's clear that teams just don't want to get beat over the top. At that point they really don't care about giving up the stuff in the middle of the field that the Lions take advantage of in the 4th quarter. It skews the numbers and if the box score is the only thing you're referencing the game doesn't look as bad as if you watch how it all goes down. _________________

I doesn't matter where the offence ranks in yards. It matters where they rank in points scored.
All the stats in the world are meaningless unless you look at them on a micro level. All that really matters is points scored and points allowed. _________________

I don't disagree with anything in the article.
The only player untouchable on the Lions roster is CJ. The rest are not playing at a level required for success at the NFL level.
The reality is there are a number of high paid players not producing at a level that warrants the investment made.
We have all discussed how Mayhew has surrounded Stafford with weapons. If these guys are weapons they better start to produce because 3 passing touchdowns suggests the offence has zero weapons.
I'm not even going to mention the defence. _________________
