1st Quarter of Buffalo Bills Game 5


1st and 10 at SF 14 F.Gore left guard to SF 19 for 5 yards (G.Wilson).
Boone angled the LDT away.. Goodwin missed 2nd level SLB block.. IUpati angles the RDT, but doesn't clear him out of RB hole much.. Miller pops the ILB, but not much movement.. nice job S to fill and tackle

2nd and 5 at SF 19 (Shotgun) A.Smith pass short right to M.Crabtree to SF 23 for 4 yards (K.Sheppard). Caught at SF 22. 1-yd YAC
pass pro blocks well enough on this quick WR curl.. LB closes quickly from behind, so no YAC

3rd and 1 at SF 23 W.Tukuafu reported in as eligible. A.Smith pass deep right to V.Davis to SF 44 for 21 yards (J.Byrd). PENALTY on SF-M.Iupati, Offensive Holding, 10 yards, enforced at SF 23 - No Play.
PA pass... nice one to VD on deeper slant route. SLB takes a pop from Tuku as Tuku blocks and releases, nearly gets vertical enough to bat Alex's pass as he closed in.. Iuapti badly struggled with RDT as Gore helps block this.

3rd and 11 at SF 13 (Shotgun) A.Smith pass short right to M.Manningham pushed ob at SF 22 for 9 yards (A.Williams). Caught at SF22. 0-yds
Staley having troubles with RE edge rush.. Iupati comes to get a shove in last second.. AD stones the LE's spin move, and keeps LE far enough that he doesn't bat pass down.. pass is accurate at sideline. Gets back some field position yds, but clearly is short of the 1st down marker.

4th and 2 at SF 22 A.Lee punts 58 yards to BUF 20, Center-B.Jennings. L.McKelvin for 80 yards, TOUCHDOWN NULLIFIED by Penalty. PENALTY on BUF-J.Byrd, Offensive Holding, 10 yards, enforced at BUF 48. L.McKelvin credited with 28-yd return.

Nickel.. small dent, but Ray is pretty stout vs C/RG double... Brooks also stout as Goldson and Bowman fill run lane quickly.. Justin also beasts his way vs LG down the LOS to close in

2nd and 6 at BUF 42 F.Jackson left end to BUF 41 for -1 yards (A.Brooks).
Nickel.. Justin and Ray just so stout vs C + RG inside as Brooks gets over RT's shoulder and beyond that of the pulling LG to cut back in for the stop behind the LOS..

3rd and 7 at BUF 41 (Shotgun) R.Fitzpatrick pass incomplete short right to St.Johnson.
Nickel.. 4mR.. fair pressure applied by only Aldon vs RT.. got upfield by bulling the RT back toward QB.. throw was high. poor, and WR route was shy of the 1st down anyway.

4th and 7 at BUF 41 S.Powell punts 59 yards to end zone, Center-G.Sanborn, Touchback.

no problem for Staley to angle off the RE.. nice job Iupati to chip the RDT on his way for needed ILB block... Goodwin handled the RDT well enough anyway.. Boone made keeping the LDT away look easy.. great partial block on SLB by Walker up the middle.. Miller lead block flew in there but didn't really block anyone well, just sorta belly-flopped in front of WLB and SLB.. Gore looking fast and determined through the hole.

1st and 10 at SF 39 A.Smith pass deep right to V.Davis pushed ob at BUF 8 for 53 yards (A.Williams). Caught at BUF 28. 20-yds YAC
PA deep pass... Alex with 3 PLUS seconds... good pass to allow for easy catch and RAC.. great pass pro here!

1st and 8 at BUF 8 (Shotgun) F.Gore up the middle to BUF 1 for 7 yards (K.Williams).
fake Ck7 reverse.. Miller pops the RE as Gore cuts around them... Staley hits but doesn't sustain a block on ILB 2nd level.. Iupati angles RDT away.. good 2nd level SLB block from Goodwin.. LDT gives Boone a shove enough to disengage, run and dive tackle RB from behind.

2nd and 1 at BUF 1 L.Davis and W.Tukuafu reported in as eligible. F.Gore up the middle to BUF 1 for no gain (N.Barnett).
LB penetrated just inside of Boone's pull block.. clogged mess, really

3rd and 1 at BUF 1 F.Gore left tackle to BUF 1 for no gain (N.Barnett).
Tuku blocks the outside to seal lane, but too much came through the inner side.. once again sneaking in behind Boone's pull block. Hate these short yardage fails.

4th and 1 at BUF 1 D.Akers 19 yard field goal is GOOD, Center-B.Jennings, Holder-A.Lee. 0 3
D.Akers kicks 68 yards from SF 35 to BUF -3. L.McKelvin to SF 44 for 59 yards (T.Brock).

Nickel.. 4mR.. pocket closing in quickly.. especially from Justin vs LT.. throw to sideline caught as Aldon closes in.

Nickel.. Ray takes on RG and spins back into run lane.. C gets 2nd level block on Bowman.. LG on Willis.. Justin scrapes down the LOS vs LT and helps us big-time here.

1st and 10 at SF 33 R.Fitzpatrick pass incomplete deep right to St.Johnson.
Nickel.. 4mR.. gradual pocket collapse.. poor deep sideline pass.. WR had a step on Cully, but ball needed to be well placed and it wasn't close enough.

2nd and 10 at SF 33 (Shotgun) Direct snap to B.Smith. C.Spiller left end to SF 38 for -5 yards (N.Bowman).
Nickel.. 4mR.. Bowman was keying in on the reverse and flew in there once sure he had the ball... special play there.. had Bowman not made the play, Aldon reacted well and would have. Had he not? Willis was coming too.

3rd and 15 at SF 38 (Shotgun) R.Fitzpatrick pass short middle to B.Smith to SF 37 for 1 yard (P.Willis). Caught at SF 37. 0-yds YAC
Nickel.. 4mR.. Brooks gets upfield rush pressure vs RT.. quick dump quickly snuffed out by Willis

Pass pro was very solid on this 4mR. Boone pulls far weakside and blocks RE well.. VD and Walker stay in strongside to block.. PA pass to Crabtree on the money to beat the zone D in time.. Only three routes on the play, and Crabtree was the right one to hit.

1st and 10 at SF 32 (Shotgun) PENALTY on SF-J.Staley, False Start, 5 yards, enforced at SF 32 - No Play.

1st and 15 at SF 27 K.Williams left end pushed ob at SF 33 for 6 yards (A.Moats).
clever slot WR reverse.. Boone pulls to block WLB well... Iupati pulls and blocks outside DB well.. nice seal block on RE from VD.. ILB flies in but Kyle's speed gets past the poor angle.. Kyle just runs out of green

2nd and 9 at SF 33 A.Smith pass short right to M.Crabtree to BUF 26 for 41 yards (J.Byrd). PENALTY on SF-F.Gore, Chop Block, 15 yards, enforced at SF 33 - No Play.
5mR coming hard at Alex.. poor pass pro from AD, Goodwin, and Iupati here.. Alex beats the blitz with a double move out to Crabtree.. who breaks tackle and picks up gobs of YAC.. Rio out wide blocking CB with intensity.. but a painful penalty from Gore here takes it all away.. Gore made his decision early to block the incoming ILB blitz, and as he was going low, Goodwin turned and put hands high.

2nd and 24 at SF 18 A.Smith pass incomplete short left to K.Hunter.
Staley getting shoved back steadily towards Alex.. Iupati beaten quickly on inside move from RDT.. Hunter was slow to pick his way through traffic to make himself available for the dump-off... never got his head around in time. Alex looking very annoyed.

3rd and 24 at SF 18 (Shotgun) A.Smith pass short middle to M.Crabtree to SF 34 for 16 yards (B.Scott, A.Williams). Caught at SF 21. 13-yds YAC
pass pro is good, and Alex hits wide open Crabtree on slant with all blocking ahead of him. Clearly a designed clearout with everyone set to block out in front... playing the field position game after that mess of plays.

4th and 8 at SF 34 A.Lee punts 54 yards to BUF 12, Center-B.Jennings, downed by SF-T.Brock.

Nickel.. Ray gets good shove on RG and had the RB 3 yds behind the line, but somehow just missed grabbing on to him.. Justin was held on the play by the LG... Bowman blocked 2nd level by C and Willis had to shed TE block to make tackle..

2nd and 6 at BUF 16 R.Fitzpatrick pass short left to D.Jones to BUF 24 for 8 yards (C.Rogers, N.Bowman). Caught at BUF 17. 7-yds YAC
Nickel.. 4mR... Ray gets some pressure slipping inside the RG/RT.. quick throw though on a block and release target.. Rogers closes but takes poor angle.. allows for 6 more and a first down as Bowman converges.

1st and 10 at BUF 24 (Shotgun) R.Fitzpatrick pass short left to St.Johnson to BUF 38 for 14 yards (T.Brown). Caught at BUF 32. 6-yds YAC
3mR.. quick throw to underneath WR hitch route thanks to large cushion given by Brown.

1st and 10 at BUF 38 C.Spiller up the middle to BUF 40 for 2 yards (N.Bowman).
3-4... Sopo stands up the C and doesn't budge.. but doesn't work towards the run lane.. Justin crashes left, but spins back outside on LT as he sees run direction.. Aldo gets briefly cut down by TE/FB.. great job by Bowman to stay clean and slip right into run lane.. Willis briefly blocked by LG.

2nd and 8 at BUF 40 (Shotgun) R.Fitzpatrick pass short left to S.Chandler to BUF 43 for 3 yards (P.Willis). Caught at BUF 43. 0-yds YAC
Nickel.. 4mR.. quick and gradual pocket collapse.. particularly Aldon shoving the LT back towards QB.. quick TE out Willis was close behind and tackled him for minimal gain.

3rd and 5 at BUF 43 (Shotgun) R.Fitzpatrick pass short right to T.Graham to SF 48 for 9 yards (D.Goldson, C.Culliver). Caught at BUF 46. 6-yds YAC
Nickel.. 4mR.. quick in-route defeats any pressure... soft 10 yd cushion from Rogers.. cleaned up by Goldson and Brown

Nickel.. 4mR.. PA rollout... Aldon beats the LT inside to get pressure but the rollout hurt and the ball is out quickly. Brooks bit oh so hard on the PA.. Easy catch as Whitner makes quick stop after

Nickel.. Brooks beats the RT inside but can't do more than get an arm around RB before he slips off... Ray worked inside of RG, so he took himself out of the eventual run lane once RB cuts back.. Goldson committed too far inside behind Ray and loses contain.. failed to recover as Spiller runs past him.

1st and 10 at SF 16 R.Fitzpatrick pass incomplete short right to St.Johnson.
Nickel.. 3mR.. PA rollout.. Brooks not fooled this time and gets upfield pressure, coverage was good and looks like a deliberate throwaway.

2nd and 10 at SF 16 (Shotgun) R.Fitzpatrick pass short left to St.Johnson to SF 8 for 8 yards (T.Brown, C.Rogers). Caught at SF8. 0-yds YAC

PA rollout.. good job AD, Walker and Miller to keep the LE, LDT away to give Alex a clean look. well placed and timed back-shoulder deep pass.. a quick cut and burst from Kyle W and he loses the CB from behind for the TD.

Nickel.. Brooks very stout vs TE, works way back in to help clog.. Ray is very stout vs RT and RG... Willis fills, absorbs block of pulling LG and sheds without losing an inch as Bowman and Brooks converge.

2nd and 7 at BUF 23 (Shotgun) R.Fitzpatrick pass short right to St.Johnson to BUF 31 for 8 yards (C.Culliver). Caught at BUF 31. 0-yds YAC
Nickel.. 5mR as Brooks backs out in zone.. Aldon dents the pocket vs LG but a quick throw on WR hitch route completed in front of Culliver. Ray actually got a finger on the pass at the LOS, but it traveled to its target anyway.

1st and 10 at BUF 31 (Shotgun) C.Spiller left guard to BUF 36 for 5 yards (J.Smith).
Nickel.. the LT actually does a good job of shoving Aldon back a few yds and Justin had his own troubles to spin out of vs the LG. The C got a 2nd level pop on Bowman.. Goldson filled and tackled hard to keep the damage more minimal.

2nd and 5 at BUF 36 C.Spiller left end to BUF 39 for 3 yards (D.Goldson).
Nickel.. Justin takes brief double from C and LG.. stout but can't work further toward RB lane.. Aldon is more stout this time vs LT but still occupied and can't make a play.. Goldson slips in to make another nice stop. We are really daring the Bills to run on our Nickel while they spread us out wide.

3rd and 2 at BUF 39 (Shotgun) R.Fitzpatrick pass incomplete deep left to C.Spiller.
Nickel.. 4mR.. fairly quick pocket collapse from all direction.. deep sideline pass to Spiller slightly overthrown and wide. Amazing that Bowman is running nearly step for step with Spiller.. the throw would have had to be excellent to get that one in.. and it was not.

4th and 2 at BUF 39 S.Powell punts 58 yards to SF 3, Center-G.Sanborn, out of bounds.

Boone with a quick pull inside.. but there's just no push from anyone here... worst of it was the RE slipping quickly inside of VD for the stop

2nd and 9 at SF 4 F.Gore left guard to SF 6 for 2 yards (N.Barnett).
Goodwin angles the LDT away.. Boone pulls wide left and lunges missing the RE but that alone did enough to keep RE from slicing into RB.. Staley gets his ILB 2nd level... the WLB meets Miller in the hole and this clogs things up... no one got a block on the SLB and that helped stuff this run

3rd and 7 at SF 6 C.Kaepernick in at QB K.Hunter left end to SF 20 for 14 yards (S.Gilmore). PENALTY on SF-D.Walker, Tripping, 3 yards, enforced at SF 6 - No Play.
Hunter has Iupati out front on pull block to get a DB wide.. Walker with poor cut block of RE, but it does enough to keep him out of the play.. VD misses block on WLB, but a good cut by Hunter negates that... pretty weak tripping call on Walker

3rd and 10 at SF 3 A.Smith in at QB K.Hunter up the middle to SF 15 for 12 yards (J.Byrd; A.Williams).
AD angles the LE away to open one side... Boone drives the LDT out and to the ground to create the other side of the run lane.. Goodwin gets 2nd level to block ILB long enough... decent late blocks down field by Kyle and VD...

1st and 10 at SF 15 K.Hunter left tackle to SF 16 for 1 yard (M.Anderson).
pitch counter.. Staley goes 2nd level for ILB block.. Boone pulls and gets RE but doesn't sustain and RE makes tackle.. Miller cuts down WLB but he's back up quickly to clog.. The main blame goes to Hunter, actually... who had Walker out wide ready to block for him.. but Hunter chose to cut back inside early.

2nd and 9 at SF 16 (Shotgun) A.Smith pass short left to M.Manningham to SF 16 for no gain (G.Wilson). Caught at SF 15. 1-yd YAC
quick screen.. Rio was desperately trying to juke the S, but the S was disciplined and able to wrap him up for minimal gain

3rd and 9 at SF 16 (Shotgun) A.Smith scrambles up the middle to SF 40 for 24 yards.
Pocket held up well enough.. Alex not liking his pass options, so he takes off through gap between LG and C blocks... nice run vision and speed from Alex to pick up far more than than the first down yardage before sliding.

1st and 10 at SF 40 PENALTY on BUF-K.Williams, Neutral Zone Infraction, 5 yards, enforced at SF 40 - No Play.
hard count gets the LDT to jump.. Alex not happy with refs for stopping the play. No contact.. play should have given Alex a free pass.

1st and 5 at SF 45 A.Smith pass incomplete short middle to M.Crabtree (S.Gilmore).
5mR but the pass pro held up well enough.. pass to Crabtree over the middle was there.. could not tell if it was dropped or the covering DB behind Crabtree was able to get a hand in to knock it away.

2nd and 5 at SF 45 A.Smith pass short right to V.Davis to BUF 38 for 17 yards (S.Gilmore). Caught at SF49. 13-yds YAC
pass pro very good... Alex scans field and hits VD who breaks a WLB tackle for more yds

1st and 10 at BUF 38 (No Huddle) A.Smith pass short right to V.Davis to BUF 37 for 1 yard (N.Bradham). Caught at BUF 37. 0-yds YAC
very quick TE out, but SLB closes and tackles quickly here

pass pro is fine again... VD open over the middle!

1st and 10 at BUF 26 (No Huddle) A.Smith pass incomplete short left to V.Davis [M.Williams].
Alex looks right but the CBs are disrupting in tight coverage.. Alex looks left and starts to run a bit, but this gives the RE a better angle to pressure and and hit him just as he releases the pass. Hit affected the pass, short sideline to VD.

2nd and 10 at BUF 26 C.Kaepernick left end to BUF 20 for 6 yards (N.Barnett). FUMBLES (N.Barnett), RECOVERED by BUF-M.Dareus at BUF 17. M.Dareus to BUF 17 for no gain (D.Walker). 3-yds of loose ball yardage. The Replay Assistant challenged the fumble ruling, and the play was Upheld.
CK7 gets the toss on a reverse... VD seals RE off.. Staley pulls and running deep for a block... Walker misses block on WLB... Goodwin misses ILB but crushes him shortly after.. Gore couldn't get much of a sideline block on S and the ILB was free coming over to converge on Ck7 with that S.. Ck7 doesn't protect with both hands.. coughs it up.. ouch.

1st and 10 at BUF 17 (Shotgun) R.Fitzpatrick pass incomplete deep left to T.Graham [Ald.Smith].
Nickel.. Aldon stunts inside and penetrates between the A gap to drill the QB in the ribs as he releases a deep bomb.. Tarell Brown is step for step in great position with the WR. Frankly, I'm surprised Brown didn't try to take a couple steps inside to pick the pass off.

2nd and 10 at BUF 17 (Shotgun) F.Jackson left guard to BUF 21 for 4 yards (P.Willis).
Justin took himself out of the draw play by trying to get upfield around the LG's outside shoulder.. Ray took an initial C/RG double.. Bowman had to step around a TE attempt block.. Willis evaded the RG attempt block to dive in and tackle RB as Justin flies in from behind.

Timeout #2 by SF at 00:37.
3rd and 6 at BUF 21 (Shotgun) R.Fitzpatrick pass short left to S.Chandler to BUF 32 for 11 yards (P.Willis). FUMBLES (P.Willis), RECOVERED by SF-D.Goldson at BUF 33. D.Goldson to BUF 28 for 5 yards (F.Jackson). 1-yd loose ball yardage The Replay Assistant challenged the fumble ruling, and the play was Upheld.
Nickel.. 4mR.. quick pocket collapse from all over.. ball is out quick and completed for a 1st down with Willis tightly trailing the TE.. Willis wraps him up from behind and the TE loses the ball before knees go down.. Goldson nicely secures the ball.

5mR... Alex with late pressure coming from edge rushes on both sides vs Staley and AD, but all did just enough. Deep ball was an easy beauty dropped in on Crabtree's flag-route.. he makes sure to secure it and check feet.

*Iupati gets away with a hold on the stunting RDT.. but I won't tell if you won't.

Nickel.. RG and RT doubled Ray and shoved him back a few yds... the LG did a pretty good job keeping Justin busy, but Justin finally leveraged himself toward run lane for the stop.. the C came out and blocked okay on Bowman, and Willis took poor angle to the RB and was stuck behind Ray's battle.

2nd and 3 at BUF 27 (Shotgun) F.Jackson up the middle to BUF 31 for 4 yards (C.Rogers).
Nickel.. front line was much more stout this time.. the C came out to block Willis... Goldson flew in but couldn't take down the RB until after he spun for first down.

1st and 10 at BUF 31 R.Fitzpatrick sacked at BUF 20 for -11 yards (A.Brooks).
Nickel.. 4mR.. no one there to block Brooks on this QB PA rollout headed his way. Brooks didn't bite on the PA and smokes the QB easily.

2nd and 21 at BUF 20 (Shotgun) R.Fitzpatrick scrambles right end to BUF 22 for 2 yards (P.Willis).
Nickel.. 4mR with Willis blitzing as Brooks backs in coverage... Willis gets upfield and shoves the LT back, then works way inside as if he knew the QB would run forward. Fitzpatrick meet Willis... ouch. Justin got great burst penetration over C's inside shoulder to pressure QB to move forward.

3rd and 19 at BUF 22 (Shotgun) R.Fitzpatrick pass short right to F.Jackson to BUF 27 for 5 yards (P.Cox). Caught at BUF 20. 7-yds YAC
Nickel.. 3mR.. designed screen.. Justin still gets edge pressure.. Cox beautifully evades downfield block attempt from the pulling C and makes RB run out of bounds.

Nickel.. PA wildcat crap.. RB fakes the WR reverse handoff and runs.. the LT was too easily able to seal Aldon inside for long enough to allow the RB to run wide left... Bowman bit briefly on reverse fake.. Willis stayed at home but had to shed a C block as he was still too far inside... shed the block quickly but not even he had the speed or angle to catch the outside runner.. Goldson finally hauls him down. Brown was blocked well downfield.

Looks like perhaps Walker went to block a S deeper instead of turning to block free WLB... wish he had.

Iupati was beaten over outside shoulder, which forced Hunter to adjust... Walker was blocking perimeter WLB.. free ILB slices in but dives and misses Hunter.. Staley initially did okay on keeping RE away, but never sustained... that RE and a free incoming SLB converged for big RB hit. Boone looked a bit confused and should have taken out that SLB.

VD pulls inside and gets a key block on an ILB... Boone pulls far weakside and gets the RE... Goodwin struggles getting anything on the LDT who scrapes over and delivers a partial hit on Hunter.. who spins and lunges for more.. Walker seems the primary read, but he is tightly trailed by a LB. Frankly, I don't see why Alex didn't throw it to a sideline spot and see if Walker could make a tough but safely spotted catch. Instead, he throws it away. Would be interesting to see where Moss is and if open once I look at coaches film.

2nd and 10 at BUF 46 A.Smith pass incomplete deep right to V.Davis [M.Williams].
AD gets beaten badly around outside shoulder... Alex really takes a nasty shot in the lower leg area that drops him hard... not sure if the pass was affected by the hit, the pressure, whether VD was slowed on his route, or Alex simply overshot VD by a foot or two.

Iupati had to recover from getting beaten inside, and nicely drove his RDT to the right of Alex... Alex saw the RDT headed in his direction and shifted to the left to help the situation.. Goodwin was working on the LDT and that LDT thought Alex was running left so he broke to meet him... then Alex cut back right to continue running, and Goodwin was in a good spot to wall off the LDT. Hunter cuts down the MLB to try and help Alex, and Alex lunges/dives over the pile..

4th and 2 at BUF 38 D.Kilgore, L.Davis and W.Tukuafu reported in as eligible. A.Smith scrambles left end to BUF 21 for 17 yards.
PA rollout run for QB. Alex executes it well.. the entire front 7 bites completely and Alex has lots of room to run.. The S finally angles Alex into a slide before he gets to the sideline. Alex nodding his head to Jim, but looks pretty annoyed at being on the sideline here instead of on the field.

Gooden committed a bit much to the right also and had to recover, but Spillman flew in to make a great open field tackle for minimal gain anyway.
