Find something with less risk then, like a mutual fund. |

Do household chores. In my free time i like to do home maintenance work, like cleaning gutters, landscaping, mowing, etc. Keep things looking fresh and nice.
Find something that excites you. I love the economics and finance. Sometimes i find myself at the computer reading articles, researching mutual funds or just browsing wikipedia. |
What in the world... |
I'm an engineer at a consulting firm. So i spend all day at a desk, thinking. It's relaxing to go home and work with my hands, and actually see the end result of something (as opposed to a piece of paper with my design on it).
|
I do the same -- after buying a house, the upkeep on it takes most of my free time that I don't spend while working. Whenever I think I'm about to be done, something else needs fixing/upgrading, etc. It's a never ending job, but I too enjoy doing those things to keep my house looking nice. _________________

I wouldn't recommend that anyone's main hobby involve putting money at risk, no matter how "safe" it feels, or how little money it takes. Kind of like he took video games to an extreme, it'd be easy to do the same thing with money. "I just won $30 this week on $1 bets! Next week i'll do 50$ bets." <-Loses $400 next week.
Those things are ok as a small percentage of your time and energy, but as your main time killer when you're home...not a good idea. |
I'm assuming most people don't need several hours to kill in a day.
Back when I was younger I would spend maybe an hour analyzing matchups and looking at parlays.
It might take me 1-2 hours to put $25 into active betting, on several different bets.
Now yes, if you're an idiot about it you could lose everything. _________________ Legends Never Die. They Breathe Through The New Generation.

My only advice would be to try to find a job or hobby. Don't know what else to say. If you have all that time opened up, eventually, you're going to get bored and go back. | This is me right here. I am 35 and have been playing for probably almost 30 years. Right now I play maybe a couple times a week but I have a kid now so my time goes to him and I'll play at night when he goes to bed. I love video games and will probably play for a long time coming. _________________

Eh, at least you have $1100. If you had invested in a few stocks or bonds instead of a mutual fund, you could have $0. _________________

Thanks for all the replies, guys!
Hopefully I'll prove some of you wrong and won't end up going back, you darn pessimists!
I think I am going to try to get my hands dirty a bit more often, hit the gym, etc. etc. Readings great too, but I don't like sitting around very much anymore. |

Now don't get me wrong, I've uninstalled plenty of games over the years in an attempt to quit. It's just that I usually end up reinstalling them after a while. I'm currently not in school and can't find a job, so I'm coming here to ask for help with finding things to do to occupy my time, maintain my sanity, and most of all, not want to blow my brains out from extreme boredom or, even worse, from going back to video games once again.
Has anyone else ever been in this situation before? |
you can get a job. They are everywhere. The only people who cannot get jobs are those who are lazy or who cannot put their egos aside.
Just wanted to throw that out there. _________________

Honestly. I think you should just play some video games. I don't believe most peoples video game adictions are real and they usually just have nothing better to do with their time. Did you ever blow off something important like a funeral, job interview, doctors appointment to play a game? Ever do something like steal or sell blood plasma? _________________

I had "English Comp 1010" last year at a local college and I had this paper due on a monday, 12:00pm (exactly 12:00pm).
That whole weekend I reserved time to finish up the essay, but I ended up playing pokemon the whole saturday. Sunday came and I tried to do the essay, but pokemon kept steering me away. I ended up staying awake until 8 am writing the paper. I then thought, "I have 3 hours to sleep, then I'll go to class."
Slept until 12:10. Had to drop the class. And that's how pokemon ruined my life. |

I started playing Runescape when I was like 12 and played that for a couple years before transitioning into World of Warcraft, which I played for about 2 years straight, and another 2 years on and off after that. Then came CounterStrike 1.6, Starcraft 2, League of Legends, DotA 2, and CounterStrike: Global Offensive. |

That's just pure immaturity. What are you going to do when you have a job? _________________

I sold my own blood plasma once. Does that make me a bad person? _________________
