I don't see why not. None of his interceptions ever count. |

Figure the roster is 53 people right? Take three away for special teams. That makes 50. Now you have 22 starters on O and D. One move down in the DC would be 44 players with 50 spots. That means there is 6 players extra for all positions. There is three DL out on the field, two deep would be 6. You figure one of the 6 extras would be a DL, but certainly you don't need 2 more. Why you take in all those players on the DL when they don't even play special teams? I think it's Merling. |
I like the break down, but you can apply that same logic to ILB, seeing that we currently have 6 there. Now as I mentioned before they offer more teams value and in our case more versatility for OLB for Jones/Lattimore, but gets to the same point that we are keeping 2 extra inside backers. I think Merling does make some sense, but at the same time I can see why we would keep him. Neal is not a Pickett fill in type player, really he is another guy to rotate with Worthy and Daniels. Merling offers a guy to keep Pickett/Wilson fresh throughout the game/season when we play running teams. Now we have not seen Neal/Worthy/Daniels really play against the run much, if any, so maybe the staff feels comfortable with plugging one of those three in to give Wilson/Pickett a breather. |

Don't your LB/TE types offer more special teams value than any other position on the roster? That's probably why you stock up on them. |

^ Definitely true, however I think we need all of our defensive linemen this year. Justo made the comment about Worthy/Daniels playing NT yesterday but we played the Saints - where we could give up run stopping ability for pass rush. Merling would've been active against Houston, StL, Jax, Minnesota, Chicago, Tennessee........those are games we have left on our schedule.
We either cut Saine, Lattimore or Richardson IMO. _________________ @PJHotel_ |

I agree that those are the guys that you do stock up on and they do offer more value from a special teams point, but if we are inactivating an ILB then the value is lost anyways. |

| I think it will be Brandon Saine to be cut or Lattimore to IR. For Saine, why keep 4 rbs when we can barely get 1 rb 15 carries. Lattimore to IR makes sense. Just my thoughts. |

Saine cut is the highest probability to me. (Unless he is playing teams a lot...haven't been paying attention to that...)
Either that or IR one of or injured. Possibly for the designated to return label. Would put them out for 6 weeks (i think) and they could be back in time for the end of the season. _________________

| Per Rob Demovsky on twitter (presumably per MM's presser today) the Packers have a 1 week roster exemption for Neal. |

Yup. No cuts til next monday. My money is on Merling. Doubt it's Saine. He plays on a lot of coverage units. _________________

I basically think the same thing about Neal. I don't think Neal was fully recovered last year and lost the power transfer that he gets from his legs. He looked really explosive in the final preseason game this year. Even though it was against mostly backups/third stringers, at least we saw that speed/power that was missing all of last year. |
