|
|
|
His spot on the roster has experienced the least amount of competition that I have ever witnessed since being an Eagles fan (excluding Brian Dawkins).
You can go all the way back to Duce Staley, even he had Buckhalter and Westbrook at his heels. Troy Vincent and Bobby Taylor had Lito and Sheldon. Sheldon had to contend with Will James and Lito was replaced by Asante. Winston Justice was drafted in the 2nd round when the Eagles already had tackles. At no point has Avant's job ever been questioned by anyone on the planet not named Powerelite. Victor Cruz and Percy Harvin are what slot receivers are suppose to look like that enjoy supreme job security. Jason Avant and his 2 TDs in his last 35 games are hurting this team significantly. Jason Avant is the "head coach's pet." He's the NFL version of the teacher's pet. |

Because there is absolutely nothing wrong with Jason Avant, he is pretty damn clutch on third downs, he is a good leader, and we're not losing games because of a lack of an elite 3rd WR.
The way our system is set up is we have two stars on the outside who can spread the field deep and outside, and you always have to account for that or you will get burnt.
So then you need reliable targets underneath who can take advantage of that room. Celek, Avant and McCoy fits this perfectly.
The slot guy in our system isn't supposed to be go-to, number one WR like Percy is for the Vikings.
Of course, you will just say Jackson is hardly a star, Maclin isn't at all, and Avant can't take advantage of the underneath stuff so let's just /thread _________________

He does sort of a point.
The problem is for a long time we have had bigger needs, and Avant is reliable. _________________

So the Eagles have a system where they pass virtually more than everyone and the inside receiver only scores 2 TD's in 35 games? The system is designed to work this way?
BTW Jeremy Maclin isn't a star... |

I think PE secretly admires Jason Avant, and to a larger extent, Jeremy Maclin. He just chooses to mask his true feelings with posts of utter disdain for them.

This. To put it in PE's words: "Andy hasn't done jack since JJ and Dawk left;" so why would anyone even care who our 3rd WR is? _________________

Part of being reliable is gaining separation. Avant is terrible at that. |

I see the point PE is making. Avant isn't a game changer or dominant by any means. He isn't racking up huge points.
It's hard to evaluate because the team obviously likes what he does, and when the ball is thrown his way he seems to make more plays than not. I just don't see Avant being targeted a whole lot.
I think that's just Andy's system. Andy doesn't need a highly paid stat machine at slot because he wants his most dangerous weapons on the outside.
I mean the Eagles largely ignored receiver for almost a decade. They aren't going to get three-deep talent.
I like what I saw from Johnson though. Too bad he's another little guy, but he's much quicker than Avant. He made a few plays coming across the middle of the field. _________________

Agreed. I think Damaris could steal his slot position by next season IF he continues to progress and remains fearless of the middle of the field. _________________

The Eagles lack a 3rd elite receiver? Since when did the Eagles have an elite receiver? |
