He does sort of a point.
The problem is for a long time we have had bigger needs, and Avant is reliable. |
Part of being reliable is gaining separation. Avant is terrible at that. |
True, but he catches almost everything thrown at him. And I should probably remove the almost. _________________

Avant is by far the more reliable receiver on our roster. He's always making key catches on third down. He always seems to be open working the middle of the field. Avant is nowhere near playmaking status, but he's very reliable and does his job. No need for an upgrade. _________________

I agree we need an upgrade in the slot, just imagine a decent upgrade to take advantage of nickel CBs LBs and safeties who can't cover.
However I don't agree we need to make another thread about it. _________________

Probably because we don't need to challenge an established veteran leader who is good at his job. Last year he was sixth in the NFL in receptions from the slot and 4th in yards. Jason Avant is good, deal with it. He's perfect for his role. |

Thanks for posting that. One can look at the statistics and clearly see that unlike some of the other names on that list Avant doesn't have the talent to play on the outside or in Harvin's case the backfield & the outside. So out of 52 catches last year, Avant made 50 of those from the slot while Harvin had 87 total receptions 52 rushing attempts 6 receiving TDs and 53 receptions from the slot. Harvin even had less targets in the slot than Avant and STILL had more receptions. Wow Percy Harvin had ZERO drops while Avant had 3. |

Yes, compare Jason Avant to Percy Harvin. Because that's smart. |

this is my favorite pure hatred that PE comes out with...totally unwarranted. hes not even really our third wr....hes our slot wr. he does slot things...nothing really besides that. if we have 3 wr on the field and one of them isnt going to do some sort of slot play..he aint out there. and he is darn good at it. he gets 3rd down conversions like crazy.
but what i love the most is that the its the 3rd wr and we get people in all the time that seem to get there chance to take his spot and cant do it. we dont lack competition we lack talent that can take his spot. _________________

A Harvin a Cruz may be slot receivers but they're also the best and 2nd best receivers on their team. In our case our slot guy is only our 3rd best receiver so obviously he isn't going to be seeing the ball as much as Harvin or Cruz. Specifically with our offense we use our slot guy basically as a safety net on 3rd down, and Avant has been damn good and consistent. Since 2008 he has a drop rate of just 5.4%, that's pretty damn impressive and I'm sure it's top 10 since 2008 among guys with at least 100 receptions. The way we run our offense and use our slot receiver, Avant is one of the best options. Another reason no ones challenged his job in recent memory is because seriously who has there been to challenge his job? _________________
