This somewhat explains it: http://reason.org/blog/show/warren-buffett-on-public-pensions
My beef is mainly with public pensions. Either way I look at pensions as something that can hinder the growth of a company... |

Get it done, so people can go back to whining constantly about the regular officials. _________________

So I'll play Devil's Advocate. I keep hearing NFL is making billions, just go ahead and give the refs what they want [paraphrasing]. The problem is the NFL isn't going to build a sustainable model then. Just like you don't go to the grocery store when you are starving, you don't re-negotiate all of your contracts quickly when you are booming. There are always peaks and valleys and during those valleys you don't want to be hamstrung by pensions and high medical benefits that you won't be able to pay. This is what brings down companies like GM.
So right now it's easy to just cave because you have the cash flow to support it, but you have to build a sustainable model. Of course there is greed involved as well and the owners should invest/save properly to prepare for the eventually valleys but that's another debate. Either way I'd rather a mutually beneficial, sustainable deal is reached instead of just rushing something in there.
Just my 2 cents... |

This is reasonable.
I'm typically a pro-union guy, but pension plans for wealthy attorneys and businessmen doing this as a hobby/part-time seems stupid to me. _________________

Pensions are also antiquated and outdated in today's financial world. The idea that a company is going to provide 100% of future income to employees who no longer work for a company while still also fully compensating current employees basically means a company is paying to fully staff itself twice. Not to mention defined contribution retirement plans offer a better solution to retirement planning anyway b/c of dollar cost averaging. _________________

Schefter is tweeting that a deal is "at hand" and both sides are working to have regular refs available this weekend.

EDIT: Pardon me, it's Chris Mortensen. _________________
