Also, your comparison to Tomlin and harbaugh is..............terrible. Do you seriously think if they switched places that Shurmur would do just as well as them???? If you do, then there is nothing to discuss, you are just wrong. |
No, but I think that if you put Tomlin and Harbaugh in Cleveland with this roster and those circumstances, the outcomes aren't much different. Im not apologizing for Shurmur, he hasn't gotten the job done (see #1) but the comparisons are not invalid.
Mike Tomlin was an average defensive coordinator on a Minnesota team that went 6-10. Harbaugh was a special teams coordinator. If we had hired them, everyone would have screamed to the rafters about how bad the hires were. |
Define significantly different |
Both coaches went to teams with established Front Offices and many years of first round talents on their team. Also veteran teams that could handle young/inexperienced HCs with very experienced Coordinators (LeBeau in Pitt and Rex Ryan in Baltimore) _________________ “From the ashes a fire shall be woken, a light from the shadows shall spring; renenwed shall be blade that was broken, the crownless again shall be king.” -- J R R Tolkien LOTR |

"if" Shurmur is fired who do all see as likely candidates.
College coaches I wouldn't mind. Top 3 in no certain order
Urban Myer of tOSU (offensive innovator and winner)
Mike Gundy OkSt (offensive innovator and winner) Weeden would love this
Lane Kiffen USC (Runs the WCO and has Monti Kiffen as a DC)
HC's from the Broadcast booth
John Gruden (runs the WCO and made Brad Johnson into a superbowl winning QB.)
LOL Bring Mangini back! J/K
Gruden is the ONLY one I could see coming back
Have to look later for Current coordinators _________________ The Dawgpounds new three headed monster!

Honestly I think Gundy and Meyer would be bad hires _________________ 2013 Joe Blackburn HOF Award Recipient

Gruden is the obvious first choice for many.
He is a proven winner who would instantly command respect from the players.
He also runs the WCO and has a history with some of the current staff IIRC.
He'd be the perfect fit IMO as he'd be an upgrade over Shurmur while allowing us to keep the same philosophy moving forward. _________________

Kiffen would be ever worse. The guy has proven to be nothing to trust.
I dont get the Gruden love. He was a good coach, but he never developed a young QB, ever, and has been out of the league for for 4 years. _________________

Imo Kelly is an offensive genius, and I feel he cold tailor a little bit of his spread to a more traditional NFL style as well _________________ 2013 Joe Blackburn HOF Award Recipient

PUT BRAD SMELLEY IN BECAUSE HE KNOWS HOW TO BLOCK FOR THE GUY BEHIND HIM, then maybe we will look better running the ball. More screen passes to TRich. Less plays on third down that don't go beyond the first-down yardage. More shotgun (because it's what Weeden is best at). LESS PENALTIES TO NEGATE OUR LONG GAINERS.
Call it coaching, play calling, whatever, but the system is obviously not working properly, and I for one am ready to be able to drink whiskey during the game on thursday (because our Backers Bar has no sunday liquor license, so we go for shots at halftime to another bar) _________________ "You mean...this ain't Malcolm Browns car...? ...Damn...my bad..."

If Holmgren couldnt get Gruden out of retirement, what makes you think Haslam sans Holmgren could? _________________

Fortunately for us, we aren't starting a young QB. |

Doesn't take proven coaches to lead a team. Neither Harbaugh was proven, and they've done OK. Same with Omar Epps in Yinzerville. And on and on.
I would be suprised if Haslam hires a retread.
My guess is either Rob Chudzinski or Jay Gruden.
Both names were being buzzed about during Jacksonville's coaching search, and I'll be puzzled if they're not considered.
I really want Chud. I know it's a philosophy change, but it seems like we have the pieces to replicate that 2007 season's offensive explosion. |

Never said it did.
Purely speculative, but a guy who is petitioning the city of Cleveland for a dome before he legally owns the Browns seems like the type of a guy who is going to want to make a 'splash' with a head coach.
Nothing wrong with either candidate you mentioned, but having a guy who's 'been there, done that' with a bunch of young players couldn't hurt IMO. _________________
