The San Diego Chargers
vs
The Atlanta Falcons
Notable Notes for this game:
- Riding a 2-0 start to the season, we're finally going to see exactly where this retooled Charger defense ranked among the better ones in the league as they face the first truly high-powered offense on their schedule - a Falcons team averaging more than 33 points per game in 2012. The Bend-but-Don't-Break defense has made its long-awaited return to San Diego, however in order for it to maintain its stay on Sunday, Donald Butler (pictured above), Shaun Phillips, and Melvin Ingram will need to bring the heat or else Matt Ryan and long time thorn in the Chargers side Tony Gonzales may carve up the "easy stuff" all day long.
- The Return of the (Lich) King? Ryan Mathews will make his 2012 regular season debut on Sunday after breaking his collarbone in the preseason opener. The Falcons run defense has not been overly impressive thus far this season, conceding 152 yards and 118 yards on the ground to the Chiefs and Broncos respectively. How much of an impact can our Night Elf Mohawk (see picture above) be expected to have his first round out and how heavily will Norv lean on him to shoulder the load of the rushing offense?
- The Burner... burned out? Fresh off a DUI, promptly earned Monday night following Atlanta's defeat of the Broncos, Michael Turner makes his return to San Diego in a pretty sad state. Nearing age 30 the wear and tear of being "the guy" in Atlanta appears to have taken its toll on the former Charger and with his new-found legal troubles, he may soon find himself playing for his job (at the end of the season). _________________

You can go ahead and mentally take Mathews, PROBABLY Gates, Julio Jones, and Roddy off of here.
Injury wise, I don't think the two teams are all that far apart.
With us having the #1 Rush D in the NFL, going against Turner, who's fresh off of a highly traumatic 2 hours in county jail, I'm not at all worried about their run game. I haven't really been following Jacquizz Rodgers but I know he can be explosive so we have to watch for him today. With both Roddy and Julio supposedly banged up, yet playing, we must contain atleast one of those dudes, but as long as we are atleast average in our secondary play, we should be okay because the Away Version of Matty Ice isn't anything to be intimidated of.
The one thing that I'm worried about is the Falcons' pass defense. They have really good interception numbers (Top 5 in NFL; tied for 2nd) and they could also put some pressure on Rivers. Hopefully some of our guys can step up (and be the Rosario/Battle/Brinkleys of this week) and keep us undefeated!
ALSO, btw, I know everyone hates walterfootball, but I go there for fantasy football help at times, and I saw this and thought it was funny:
Michael Turner, Falcons
Michael Turner was just arrested for a DUI, but it doesn't appear as though that'll affect his availability Sunday. The bigger issue is that he sucks.
Lastly, GO CHARGERS! _________________

Good luck to you guys as well. Let's keep this one injury free, shall we? We are very brittle!
I'm sure Spoon will get his sack, just let Melvin Ingram get his first ever.
Hopefully Mathews gets atleast around 17 carries today, and averages atleast 4.2ypc. Touchdown or no touchdown, we could use the 70 yards (give or take) from him. _________________

The inactives
| Rotoworld wrote: | | The Chargers declared Ronnie Brown inactive, a sign that they're very comfortable with Ryan Mathews' health. He'll start and be supported by Curtis Brinkley in a change-of-pace role. Other Chargers inactives: LT Jared Gaither, NT Antonio Garay, CB Shareece Wright, TE Ladarius Green, ILB Jonas Mouton and SS Brandon Taylor. |

Stuck watching the Chiefs/Saints dumpster fire of a game... though maybe that's a good thing since I didn't see Ryan just march down the field, carving up our D en route to an opening drive score. _________________

At least they botched the snap on the extra point. Drives like that can't keep happening. _________________

Saints/Chiefs game goes into OT now. FML. Serious, I'm going to miss the entire 1st quarter at this rate.
Damn you LA market! _________________

It just got worse... I just checked the guide and DirectTV and the LA market strike again.
Not only are they not broadcasting our game in my market... they're showing the Raiders/Steelers game instead.
I want to cry. _________________

The next two weeks show us if we are paper dragons or AFC West contenders. _________________

The return of red zone turnovers in games with very little margin for error.
Ryan Matthews is back. _________________
