Overview

The Terrapins' leading tackler from a year ago, Hartsfield took over as the leader of the defense last season after Kenny Tate went down with his knee injury.

Entering his fourth year as a starter, he has done a nice job bulking up and steadily improving since enrolling at Maryland.

Hartsfield was only a two-star recruit out of high school in Raleigh, NC, but impressed the coaching staff during a camp visit and earned a scholarship offer. He started 20 games at weak-side linebacker as a redshirt freshman and sophomore before moving inside to middle linebacker last season, leading the team with 108 tackles despite missing three games due to injury.

Hartsfield will stay inside for the Terps in 2012, but with the defense moving to a 3-4 formation, he will be asked to do a few different things.

Analysis

Hartsfield is an impressive athlete for the position and has done a nice job getting stronger in the weight room, adding over 30 pounds since high school. Hartsfield needs to clean up some mental lapses on the field and show the same consistency and energy on every snap, something he didn't always do in the past. He currently projects as a mid-round linebacker, but the NFL will always find room for linebackers who averaged double-digit tackles at the college level (Hartsfield averaged 12.0 tackles per game in 2011).

Draft Scout Player News
09/10/12 - Maryland forced a fumble on Temple's first offensive play, but for the second straight week, the Terrapins committed more turnovers and still won. All four Maryland miscues were by freshmen -- two fumbles by RB Wes Brown, one by Perry Hills and a muffed punt by Stefon Diggs. All three made positive plays, too, and for the second straight week, LB Demetrius Hartsfield had a game-sealing takeaway. He had an interception with 2:05 left, on the heels of a late fumble recovery to clinch the William & Mary win. - The Sports Xchange

09/05/12 - Senior middle linebacker Demetrius Hartsfield led the Terps with 13 tackles against William & Mary. Hartsfield entered the game as the ACC's active leader with 260 tackles. Hartsfield's fumble recovery with 1:11 remaining sealed the game. - The Sports Xchange

It looks like Hartsfield has some versatility having experience playing inside in both the 4-3 and 3-4 defensive schemes.

Any thoughts on him as an NFL prospect?

11/05/12 - Maryland middle linebacker Demetrius Hartsfield is out for the season with a torn ACL. It's the latest in a series of serious injuries for the Terrapins, who have already lost four quarterbacks and starting wide receiver Marcus Leak for the year. Hartsfield, a senior, leads Maryland with 78 tackles. The injury occurred last Saturday in the second quarter of a 33-13 loss to Georgia Tech. Coach Randy Edsall says, ''This is another tough loss for the program. ... To have his senior year cut short is disheartening.'' Hartsfield has 3 1/2 sacks, an interception and two fumble recoveries. His 338 career tackles is ranks 15th in school history. Maryland (4-5, 2-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) has three games left in the season. The Terrapins play at No. 10 Clemson on Saturday. - AP Sports
