I think I'd love to see a "1-2 OL, the rest defense" type of mock. _________________ 11 AAL: Ryan Donahue

I doubt Bell rises to 1st round status and that Amerson falls that far. I gues I would take 2 if I had the option.
1- trade down a little and take DJ Fluker RT
2- trade up and take TJ McDonald S or Jonathan Banks CB
3- stay put and take CJ Mosley LB or Khaled Holmes C
5- BPA from here on. _________________ Kate Upton for sexy President!!!

Option 2.
I don't believe in drafting a RB in the first round unless he's the sort of guy that only appears once every few years. Build the defense and build the offensive line. You can plug in just about anyone at RB if your line is good enough. _________________

You're kidding me with Le'Veon Bell in the first round, right? Yeah, he put up 200 yards against Boise, but he's been decidedly ho-hum over the last two weeks. I can see him getting picked in the 2nd or 3rd round, but there's no way I can see him being a top 25 pick. He'll be a productive back in the NFL, but I think he's more of a #2 or a guy you use in a platoon. Besides, he's basically the same type of back as Leshoure.
We'll know a lot more about our RB situation next week when we're actually able to see Leshoure take some snaps. It's also worth noting that our offensive line didn't do a lot of favors for our backs last week, but then again, the 49ers have quite possibly the league's best defense, especially against the run. That we weren't able to run successfully shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone--no one runs well against the 49ers. Still, it's disconcerting to see that the 49ers lined up with both safeties 15 or 20 yards deep on nearly every play and we weren't even able to average even 3.5 yards a carry against them. I do have to wonder why they didn't even try to get the screen pass going at all.
To me, I think it's pretty simple--the Lions need some help at CB, S, and LB above all else (Levy and Durant are free agents at year-end; neither are irreplaceable). They weren't that great at running the ball last year, but still managed a top-5 offense. Clearly you'd like to see some improvement in the run game, but that problem goes deeper than just RB--we need to block better. Reiff is a good start toward that end, but Raiola and Backus are getting too old and Cherilus is a free agent at the end of the year (though I think he's probably going to get re-signed). So I would go with option 2; help the defense out first and foremost. I would probably want to look for a guard somewhere in the 3rd or 4th round, however. That said, I should also point out that we don't have a fourth round pick--it was traded for the pick we used on Tahir Whitehead. _________________

we need to go hard and heavy on secondary help often and early in the next draft.
d-line is set (we will find a way to resign the guys we need/want to resign here) for at least a couple years.
the linebackers look (to me) to be massively improved over the last year or so.....also alot of depth at the position.....even levy looks to have improved his game this year....
the offense (aside from perhaps RB) is complete......we could perhaps use more youth/fresh blood on the o-line.......
the secondary is where we need to be focusing in this draft...ideally id like to see a CB/S in the first.......im thinking xavier rhodes/t.j. macdonald will be there when we are on the clock.........dee milliner or eric reid would make me happy as well.... |

I would take Lattimore in a heartbeat outside of that, I'm going defense. _________________

I'm not super impressed with Lattimore. Obviously he's a first round pick, but he's got an injury history and a 4.9 career YPC is nowhere near as impressive in college as it is in the pros. He's more of a Doug Martin or a David Wilson--first round picks, but do you really think either has star potential? I guess you also have to look at what Mikel Leshoure does before making that decision. Or see if Best can come back and play the last 10 games of the season, although I think at this point Best shouldn't be considered a key member of the team but rather just a guy it's be nice to have, but you don't count on because he's too fragile. I like the idea of drafting linemen better than I like the idea of drafting Lattimore. _________________

The Lions won't take a WR or RB in the second round. If they're going to upgrade either of those positions it would have to be with a 1st round pick and they'd have to be looking at an absolute can't pass on guy.
They also may need two safeties this offseason if Delmas doesn't resign. _________________

If they take a skill guy the player best be a generational talent. I can already feel the stroke imngoing to have if they draft a RB or WR high. _________________

I completely agree. It would have to be on the same level as Calvin, and that's extremely unlikely since I doubt they'll be picking in the top 5.
I honestly don't see how they can't go defense with this pick. Unless there is a stud offensive linemen on the board. But, I think Mayhew has a plan and I expect him to continue to rebuild this team. I still think they need two more off seasons to become a complete football team with solid starters/depth at every position. _________________
