This should be even more fuel to the fire to get the real refs back in place. _________________

Maybe, but who is to say that the regular refs arent fans of particular teams either? |

I'm surprised this hasn't happened sooner, TBH.
I have no problem with Refs who are fans of particular teams, though. But they should have to "register" their favorite team(s) and be not allowed to play in games which that team or a division rival plays, or games that affect that team's playoff status. _________________ With much cheese,

I can agree with this. Its not an issue specific to the replacement officials, but the media will spin it that way in any attempt to bash them while they can. However, I would imagine that since the replacement refs are temporary there might be more concern over it that a long term employee. |

From what they were saying on ESPN, regular officials are thoroughly checked out to see what teams they are fans of, what teams they dislike, etc. and are grouped/assigned accordingly.
This goes to show that the NFL did not have the time to do these thorough checks on the replacement officials. _________________

This does absolutely nothing to add to the conversation, and all you're doing is looking to anger a fanbase. There's no place for that on FF.
Moving on.
I don't see a problem with a ref being a fan of/liking certain teams. It would be nearly impossible to be as familiar with the game as they are, and not have grown up watching and cheering for a specific team. Like someone mentioned, as long as they aren't reffing that game, or a division rival, or a game that affects that team, it shouldn't be a problem. _________________

Well I'll find a way to turn him being removed into an excuse if we lose.
I really like how NFL Networks is making it perfectly clear that this is nothing that the ref did wrong, and there is no reason to think he'd make calls in favor of the Saints, it's simply a precaution.
It would be too easy to see "Ref removed from Saints/Carolina game for being a Saints fan" and assume the ref was trying to cheat. It's certainly possible to be a fan of a team and still ref a game fairly, but it's not a risk the NFL can take. _________________

Chaos, and the NFL would be forced to bring back the regular refs. Not that it was because he was a replacement ref, but the public perception would force the NFL to bring the regular refs back. _________________

This is on the NFL not the replacement refs
Its no bigger than the David Boston/Byron Boston situation. |
