Wow, thats significant!
Doubling the playing time on defense for Everson Griffen.
I hope we continue to see him out on the field.
In addition he adds tremendus value on ST play as well.
I can tell he always has lots in the tank. _________________

By my rough math going off the chart in the link on the previous page, Griffen has probably played roughly 20 percent of his time at DE and roughly 75 percent of his snaps at DT, presumably with the other 5 percent at linebacker and special teams. _________________

The Vikings defense against Washington:
http://www.1500espn.com/sportswire/Breaking_down_the_tape_from_the_Vikings_loss_to_the_Redskins101612
One thing was evident, the Vikes played much less nickel. Maybe that is why Griffin ran wild. I would rather have that extra DB on the field than a LB in games against a team like Washington.
| Quote: | | DL Everson Griffen (19) played less than usual, not because he missed some practice time after his mother's passing, but because the Vikings played so little nickel defense. He hit Griffin once and stopped a counter to RB Evan Royster for no gain on second-and-goal at the 1. DL Christian Ballard (15) had a stop. NT Fred Evans (eight) keeps playing less and less. |
I think it was a huge failure to only have Griffen on the field for under 20 snaps, I am not pleased with that. He needs to be around 30-40 snaps per game. Looks like Ballard has surpassed Evans in playing time, but Ballard still seems to do very little in creating a pass rush.
| Quote: | | NT Letroy Guion (41) made a bunch of plays off blocks, including a key stop on a draw to Morris that otherwise would have gained a lot more than 4 yards. |
Guion has been a bright spot, seems to be doing a good job getting off blocks and splitting double teams.
Three Linebackers:
Greenway - 58 snaps
Brinkley - 58 snaps
Henderson - 36 snaps
Clearly, not enough nickel was played. One thing was that Josh Robinson returned to the nickel and only played 22 snaps. That to me, is inexcuable, he is playing really good football and he needs more paying time. I just dont understand why the team played so little nickel against a team like Washington who obviously was going to run a lot of exotic looks with the option and RGIII. You need speed to defend this type of offense. The Linebackers looked outmatched trying to defend the option looks.
| Quote: | | Eventually, they adjusted and had CB Chris Cook (58 snaps) press at the line -- but not before he'd given up completions of 15, 16, 14 and 17 yards, all on in-breaking routes. |
Cook had his worst game of the season, he gave up too much in the intermediate passing game.
| Quote: | | No. 3 CB Josh Robinson (22) was OK in limited turns, allowing three completions for 26 yards in four targets, with the other dropped. |
Robinson should be the starting LCB, not Cook, not Winfield.
| Quote: |
SS Jamarca Sanford (57) forced another fumble that bounced out of bounds after defeating WR Leonard Hankerson's block and saved a potential touchdown by stopping Morris after Brinkley abandoned his gap inside. It's becoming tougher by the week to believe Mistral Raymond (ankle) really will return as the starter. |
Interesting opinion, Sanford may not be so quick to go to the bench when Raymond returns. Who knows. Sanford is more aggressive and physical, but I trust Raymond in coverage assignments. Maybe they work a rotation, Sanford starts against run heavy teams, Raymond starts against teams like the Packers and Lions. |

| This reaffirms to me that Cook does well against receivers like Larry Fizgerald and Calvin Johnson, but he struggles against those shorter, quicker type receivers. |

Perhaps they should consider going with match-ups instead of sides then. _________________

| Quote: | Vikings DC Alan Williams believes CB Antoine Winfield is playing as well as any player he's seen "in a long, long time."
Winfield had a team-high 10 tackles, three of them for losses, and an interception in the Redskins loss. Don't even try a screen pass to his side of the field. Pro Football Focus rates Winfield the top cornerback in the NFL in a season which has seen Darrelle Revis, Brent Grimes, and Lardarius Webb go down for the count. |

I think it has more to do with zone coverage. Three of those big chunks of yardage was Fred Davis. Cook just does not close fast enough in zone coverage. In the 3rd quarter they tried the exact same pass / route to Fred Davis but that time Cook was in press coverage and he was able to reach in a deflect the pass. _________________

With defense being a key to the Vikings' 5-2 start, the play of the secondary has provided the greatest encouragement. The Vikings rank 10th in the NFL in pass defense, allowing 219.4 yards per game, after finishing 26th (251.2) in that category in 2012.

The best thing I can say about what Alan Williams has done is he has listened to his players. When Jared and Kevin went to him with concerns after the Indy game, he adjusted. When a blitz got burned at the worst possible time against Washington, he owned up in meetings the following week. He has done a good job mixing things up and seems to have players' trust. The amazing thing is last week we saw an evolution back to the way the Vikings have played forever. They basically sat in Cover-2 all day and just let the front four wreak havoc. |

From the 1500espn breakdown on how TB covered Rudolph:
Tampa used safeties to match up when Rudolph was detached from formation (20 times) and ran linebackers underneath him in zone.
Why do the Vikings keep trying to have Greenway cover tight ends, on 3rd down, and not a safety? There is no good reason at all. _________________ Wins are a team stat, not a QB stat |

Probably due to the other Safety being Sanford. The idea of him being the single high safety is frightening. _________________

In Sunday’s 34-24 win over Detroit, the Vikings didn’t allow a third down to be converted into a first down until 3:40 remained in the game and it would be the only third down the Lions made all game in a start-to-finish turning-point statistic.
The key to success on third down often centers around the distance needed to pick up a first down. Not only did Detroit convert just one of nine third downs, the numbers tell you they shouldn’t have. The Lions faced nine third downs in the game, from distances of five, seven, eight, eight, 10, 10, 11, 19 and 20 yards. On average, teams convert about 30 percent of third downs of five yards or less. Get them to eight or more yards and the conversion rates drop precipitously.
