I was hoping to do a breakdown of the play of our Dline this season but with the high rotation of linemen and the amount of statistics to look out for on that side of the ball I just don’t have the time…so I will shift my focus back to the offensive side of the ball…as we all know the amount of talent we have at the skill positions is pretty much so unprecedented for a Bears team…but the Oline must hold up in protection as well as pave the way for our running game if this offence is going to reach it’s immense potential…here are the stats I will be taking into account…

Snaps Played (not including penalties or knee downs)
Sacks Allowed
Sack Yardage Given Up
Pressures Allowed
False Start Penalties Committed
Holding Penalties Committed

I will keep a Total Season Record of all these stats on this OP and do a weekly post with a breakdown game by game...

1st series…1st play of the game Webb blocks down on the RE…Kellen Davis has the ROLB who goes right past him for the sack…after a penalty and play for little gain the Bears face 3rd & 21…Webb is in a 2 point stance facing Dwight Freeney…he does a fantastic job…Freeney makes contact before breaking off and trying to run the wide arc…Webb takes the initial hit then adjusts to use his length to push Freeney well past the pocket...very impressive play…2nd series…only one play on this series before Jay throws a pick 6 but again it’s a solid play from Webb against Freeney…again 2 point stance…Freeney with the outside rush…Webb shows a solid kick slide and uses his long arms to keep Freeney out of his body…3rd series…run play on 1st down…Spaeth blocks down on the RE…Webb pulls to the outside to take on Freeney…simply dominates him…locks him up…walls him off and pushes him away from the play…3rd & 10…again Webb dominates Freeney…2 point stance…kickslide is perfect…great balance in his upperbody…gets his hands on Freeney and then uses Freeney’s momentum against him to keep him running up field before pushing him to the ground…Jay gets outside and completes the pass for the 1st down…on the resulting 1st down Webb cut blocks Freeney…impressive for a 6-7” man to get down so low on 6-1” Freeney…this is where Freeney’s ankle is injured and Jerry Hughes comes into the game…Bears run the same play as before…TE blocks down on the RE…Webb pulls around him to take on the ROLB…Webb gets his hands and mass on Hughes and that’s all she wrote…Forte gets a real big gain out of it…on the resulting 1st down Webb looks to the outside for the OLB rushing…no one comes so he quickly comes off his assignment and doubles up on the LE to shut down the rush…3rd & 10…the Colts run a very clever play on this one…the RE & ROLB both rush inside…the NT then stunts to the outside of both of them…Webb reads the stunt of the ROLB correctly but didn’t see the NT coming all the way round till the last minute…he comes off the ROLB…and dives to get his right hand on the NT pushing him just enough to allow Jay the time to shuffle his feet…step up in the pocket and make the throw…it’s incomplete but we get a PI call…after another 1st down and PI call the Bears are on the 1…on the 2nd down…Webb gets to the 2nd level and blocks the SLB who was chasing down the play to the right of our Oline…does enough to keep him from making the play and Bush pounds it in for the score…4th series…even tho the offence go 3 & out this was a great series for Webb…1st down…the ROLB fakes an outside speed rush then tries to undercut to the inside…Webb honours the outside rush but then quickly adjusts to stuff the rush…great use of both his hands and body to dominate the rusher…2nd down…Webb blocks down on the RE and pushes him to Webb’s right…the TE kicks the OLB out and there is a massive lane for Bush to cut back into for a nice gain…3rd down…Colts bring a NB blitz…Webb waits and reads what the ROLB is doing…he stunts away from Webb’s side…Webb then again shows great foot speed & upper body balance to get enough depth to cut off the angle the NB can take…locks on to the NB and pushes him about 8 yards away from Jay in the pocket…5th series…this was a long drive that led to the Marshall TD…there isn’t a single negative play to be held against Webb…another very solid outing…6th series…continued with his extremely solid play…still haven’t seen a negative play…7th series…more solid play…I’m running out of ways to say just how good he has been so far in this game lol…Bush slams it in for another TD behind the left hand side of the line…8th series…1st series of the 2nd half…the word I would use to describe Webb’s play so far is consistent…yes I said “consistent”…something that Webb has never been…every set looks the same...Forte goes in for a TD…9th series after the Colts turn the ball over on ST…Bears go 3 & out but again Webb looks good…always seems to know who to block which is something else which was a struggle at times last season…10th series…after the Conte INT…3 & out for the Bears…Webb solid again…11th series…another 3 & out but Webb kept Jay clean…12th series…back to back runs on 2nd & 3rd downs…Webb gets his man to the ground on both plays opening up holes leading to the 1st down…on the TD pass to Alshon…the RE gets inside on Webb…but unlike in years past where a guy would get past him untouched Webb adjusts his body to get enough on the RE to slow him down…Forte off the play action comes over to help…Jay has a clean pocket and throws the strike…this is as close to a bad play as Webb got all day…13th series…3 & out for the Bears…14th series…Jennings picks off Luck…Bears knee down for the win…

Overall…The best game I have ever seen out of Webb…and just as importantly the most consistent game I have seen…from start to finish no matter who he was asked to block he did a great job…I will guarantee that there weren’t 5 LTs in the NFL who played better in week one…he was outstanding.

1st series…2nd & 24 after the sack & penalty…Spencer explodes off the ball and drives the RE out of the play creating a cut back lane for Forte but he is hit on the 2nd level…Spencer shows very good leg drive on the play…Bears go 3 and out…2nd series…Jay throws the pick 6 and we are off the field…3rd series…1st down Spencer again shows his athleticism in the run game getting to the 2nd level to take on but Forte is tackled before the play makes it that far…3rd & 10…Spencer’s pass pro technique is terrible here…Cory Redding gets quick pressure with a simply swim move…Spencer ends up off balance bent at the waist…Jay is flushed to the right but makes a good throw on the run for the 1st down…on the 2nd & 10 Spencer pulls to his left and does a great job cut blocking the LB…Webb makes a great block…E-Rod then does the same to the safety and Forte is sprung for a big run…after the PI call Forte takes the ball on 2nd & 10…Spencer pulls to his right this time…he basically misses the block getting just a hand on the OLB…Forte’s speed takes him out of trouble and he makes a nice run…another PI call and we are down on the 1 and Bush takes it in on the right hand side…4th series…3rd & 7 Spencer shows his lack of power here giving up ground to the RE…Jay still has plenty of time to make the throw but it could be a concern down the road…Bears go 3 & out…5th series…2nd & 10 for the Bears…Spencer does a great job on the RE during the running play…walls off the RE then pancakes him…play is called back for holding…2nd & 20…this time Spencer does a great job in pass pro…stands his man straight up allow Jay complete the long pass downfield to Hester…2nd & 10 after the first down…again Spencer’s pass pro is poor…misses his punch then is completely off balance falling to the ground…luckily the DL ends up hitting off his own man and Jay gets the ball out quickly…Forte makes an outstanding catch for a big gain…on the next play Marshall catches his TD…series 6…after Jennings 1st INT…2nd down Spencer falls off his run block and allows the RE to make the tackle on Bush…does a nice job in pass pro on the next play that results in Alshon’s most impressive catch of the day…2nd pressure for Spencer on the day…it’s a carbon copy of the 1st…swim move from the RE leaves him off balance and Jay scrambling to his right…Redding might have got a hit on Jay if Garza hadn’t got off his block to slow Redding up…3rd & 11…Bears try to catch out the Colts with a draw…yet again Spencer struggles with the swim move…he recovers enough to help out with Garza on the double team but we don’t get the 1st and kick the FG…7th series…nice job in pass pro on 1st down standing his man up…Jay completes a long pass down field to Kyle Adams…the next 3 plays are all solid jobs in pass pro from Spencer and we get another 1st down…after another 1st down to Marshall…Jay completes the long pass to Bennett that came up just short of a TD…really nice job from Spencer on this play…Spencer & Garza double team the NT…the LE stunts behind the NT with Spencer coming off the block to cut block the LE to the ground….he would have had a clear run at Jay had Spencer not read it right…another PI call and we are on the 1…on the next play Bush goes in for the TD…8th series…solid series all round…does a real nice job on Forte’s TD run…pushes the NT to his right allowing Forte to cut back to his left for the score…9th series…solid series…offence 3 & out so we kick the field goal…10th series…after the Conte INT…3 & out but solid from Spencer…11th series…1st down…Spencer pulls to his left…misses the block on the LB and Forte is tackled for a loss…Bears go 3 & out…12th series…2nd & 9…does a good job here in pass pro…blocks the RE initially before coming off the block to take on the blitzing ILB…keeps Jay clean and we pick up another 1st down…1st & 10…Spencer pulls to his right to block the safety who is up in the box…does a nice job allowing Forte to get outside him…more solid run blocking before the Bears go play action deep down the field to Alshon for the score…series 13…1st play of the drive…Spencer again pulls to the left to take on a blitzing safety…does a good job and springs Bush for a big run…the play is called back tho for a hold on Davis…on the next play Spencer again is asked to pull…this time just one spot to his left…does a great job on the cut block against the ILB opening up a nice hole for Bush who is tackled from the inside…next play…guess what? Spencer is asked to pull to his right this time…blocks the LOLB well but other Colts come in to make the play…offence go 3 & out so punt…14th series…Jennings picks off Luck…Bears knee down for the win…

Overall...Pretty much so what I expected from Spencer…looked great on the move…lots of explosiveness in the running game but lacks power & technique in pass pro…gave up both pressures to and really struggles with the swim move…he is a key component for the run gave because of his ability to pull and lead through the hole but his pass pro could be a concern against more talented Dlinemen.

1st series…good job in pass pro on 1st down…controls his man before putting him to the ground…very poor shotgun snap on the 3rd down play…hardly gets the ball off the ground and puts Jay on the backfield from the start of the play…Bears go 3 & out…2nd series…on 1st down Garza is pushed back into the pocket by the NT giving up a pressure…it’s a quick hit route to Forte so Jay gets rid of the ball but throws the pick 6...having watched the game back a few times now this is the one bad play call Tice made all game…1st & 10 that deep and Jay is in the shotgun…should have played it safe…3rd series…poor play from Garza when run blocking…he is trying so hard to get to the 2nd level that he doesn’t block the NT who’s penetration destroys the entire play by allowing a LB to come free to make the TFL…Bears pick up the 1st on 3rd down…Garza does a really solid job on the rest of the series…down on the goal line Garza does a great job pulling on Bush’s first TD…he gets a good block on the WILB who was in the best position to make the tackle and Bush pounds it in…4th series…Bears go 3 & out but it’s a rock solid series for Garza…very nice pass pro on 3rd down…5th series…1st play of the 2nd quarter…Garza does a nice job as a run blocker here…he handles the NT one on one…very good leverage and the NT ends up on the ground…a few plays later Garza manhandles the NT on his own again to give Forte a hole to run through but a holding call brings it back…solid for the rest of the series that ends in Marshall’s TD grab…6th series…solid work from Garza on 1st down using a cut block to put the RE on the ground…Jay completes a big play down the field to Marshall…on the resulting 1st down Garza falls off the block against the NT which leads to him tackling Forte for little gain...again it looks like a case where Garza is too concerned about getting to the 2nd level rather than locking up the Dlinemen…makes up for it tho on the next play by covering up Spencer’s mistake in pass pro…gets off his own block and enough on the RE to give Jay the time to move to his right…after the penalty on Hester the Bears face 3rd & 11…try to trick the Colts by running a draw…Garza does a good job selling the face then sealing of the NT to give Bush a lane…Bush however runs into the back of Garza and bounces off him…gets a good 7 yards gain out of it and the Bears kick a field goal…7th series…rock solid series all round from Garza…Bush takes it in for his second score…8th series…1st series of the 2nd half…solid start to the drive…down inside the 10 on 2 & 4…Forte takes the hand off and runs right behind Garza who has gotten to the 2nd level and taken care of the WILB giving him plenty of space to roll through an arm tackle and in for the score…9th series…after the JT Thomas ST turnover…solid job by Garza but offence can’t pick up the 1st down so kick a field goal…10th series…after the Conte INT…another solid job by Garza but again the offence can’t pick up the 1st and go 3 & out…11th series…after the Peppers fumble recovery…another 3 & out for the Bears but Garza wasn’t at fault…12th series…after picking up a 1st down the Bears face a 2nd & 7…Garza yet again manhandles the NT in the running game by himself leaving big gap for Bush to take advantage off for a solid run…and again 2 plays later…did a nice job on the NT all day outside of 1 play…on the next play Jay hit Alshon deep for a TD…13th series…the Bears call 3 running plays to run the clock down…Garza is solid…but we go 3 & out…14th series…Jennings picks off Luck…Bears knee down for the win…

Overall…Garza was as he always is…solid yet unspectacular…the move to centre has really helped his game…he did a great job in the running game being asked to handle the NT one on one on many occasions…his pass pro was solid as well…it was a good start to the season.

1st series…very solid start for Louis…on 1st down he shows power when he & Garza are doubled up on the NT…Garza halts the NTs momentum before Louis pushes him to the ground…then on 2nd down Louis & Garza double up to drive the NT out of the hole for Forte’s run…3rd down Louis shows nice power when teaming up with Garza on the NT…but Bears can’t convert…2nd series…does the best job of any of our Olinemen on the Cutler pick 6 showing really good hand placement and quick feet to mirror his man…keeps him well away from Jay…3rd series…solid start to the series…Bears pick up the 1st on 3rd down…on 2nd down Forte takes the ball running to the left and holes are opened up by Webb, Spencer & E-Rod…Louis however shows his athleticism by getting all the way from RG to the left hand side of the field to throw a really powerful block on a Colt defender who is trying to chase him down from behind…on the resulting 1st down play Louis again shows very good hand placement, arm extension and quick feet in pass pro…after a PI call the Bears are down in the redzone…shows nice power in the running game to help Forte to a big gain down to the 1 yard line…another PI call against the Colts and the Bears decide to just run it in…1st down Louis is too quick out of his stance…he misses the hit on the NT who gets penetration…2nd down however he gets it spot on…comes out his stance slower but gets a great hit on the Dlinemen which stand him straight up…Bush runs behind him and Carimi for the score…4th series…Bears go 3 & out on this series but Louis again is rock solid…very impressed with his pass pro technique so far…feet don’t stop and are always flat to give him a power base…upper body is always straight so he isn’t off balance…good hand placement and power in his punch…5th series…after picking up one first down the Bears face a 3rd & 4…Louis and Carimi work very well together here…the Colts run a stunt between the LE & DT…Louis recognizes what’s coming getting off the block on the DT when he feels Carimi has him and working back inside to pick up the LE…Mathis doesn’t even try to bull rush him and pulls out of the rush…Jay completes the pass downfield to Bennett…and Mathis is so far away from Jay that he makes the tackle on Bennett lol…after a few 1st downs Cutler finds Forte with a long pass out of the backfield…on this play the LE caught Louis off balance with a spin move…it’s his first bad play of the day in pass pro…the LE’s momentum is stopped but if he was a little more athletic he might have been able to keep his feet moving…Louis only seems to make mistakes when he tries to do things to quickly…when he slows everything down he is much better…the next play Marshall catches the TD…6th series…after the first Jennings INT…very solid as both a run blocker and pass protector on the whole series…Bears go down field and kick a field goal…7th series…another rock solid series…Louis’ hand fighting skills are impressive…haven’t seen a Dlinemen get his hands inside on Louis’ pads the whole day…after Bennett’s big catch and a PI call against the Colts the Bears are down on the 1 with Bush rumbling in for the TD…8th series…1st series of the 2nd half…another solid series with Forte going in for a TD…on the TD run Louis walls off the LE well to keep him away from Forte running to his left…just again has to watch the speed he comes off the ball at because of his tendency to fall off blocks because he is moving to quickly…it sounds crazy but a lot of the time slower is better…9th series…after the JT Thomas turn over…Bears go 3 plays and kick the field goal but it’s another solid outing for Louis…10th series…Bears go 3 & out and Jay is sacked for the 2nd time…watching the right hand side of the line you can see it’s a busted play more than a poor play against an individual linemen…it’s supposed to be a screen pass to Forte…but the Colts have a safety in man coverage with him…they bring a 5 man blitz and the Bears just don’t have enough man to pick it up with Forte already out in his route…Jay eats the sack instead of trying to for it to Forte…11th series…Bears go 3 & out but again Louis is solid…12th series…after Marshall picks up a 1st down Louis throws great blocks to open up holes for Bush on the ground…on 2nd down he shows power by driving his man backwards…on 3rd down he pulls to his left and takes the LB out of the hole for Bush to run through untouched for the 1st down before the other ILB tackles him…on the next play Jay finds Alshon off of playaction for a TD…13th series…the Bears face 3rd & 15 but just run the ball to keep the clock moving...Louis pulls to his right taking out the WILB and giving Bush another few yards before the SILB makes the tackle…Bears go 3 & out…14th series…Jennings picks off Luck…Bears knee down for the win…

Overall…Very impressive outing in pass pro for Louis…showed not only very good technique but great power not allowing himself to be moved back towards Jay…I wasn’t overly impressed with him run blocking but he was solid enough in that area…all Louis needs to do is slow himself down a little which will come the more he trusts his technique which has clearly improved in the offseason.

Gabe Carimi…

Combined Penalty Yardage Given Up…2 yards

1st series…solid 1st down play but on the 2nd down Carimi gives up a false start penalty…first real game action in almost a year backed up on his own goal line against an elite speed rusher like Mathis…I’ll give him a pass…2nd down Carimi shows his power in the run game by driving his man backward…3rd down he takes a solid angle to cut of Mathis speed rush…Jay steps up into the pocket but can’t complete the pass…2nd series…Jay throws the pick 6…Bears off the field…3rd series…2nd & 10…the Bears Oline slide protection to the left to sell the play fake to Forte…the Colts call the perfect blitz…Louis blocks down on the NT and Carimi is supposed to block down on the LE…however when the Colts bring the WILB on the blitz Carimi is slow to come off his initial assignment of the LE to take the inside man…the WILB gets through for a pressure on Jay who can’t complete the pass and takes a hit…3rd & 10…much better play on this one…blocks down on the LE stopping all his momentum…Davis picks up the OLB…Forte picks up an additional blitzer on that side which gives Jay the space to roll out to his right and complete the 1st down pass…Carimi is solid in pass pro and after a PI call against the Colts Forte takes the ball on 2nd & 10…Carimi blocks down on the LE sealing him off from the play completely…E-Rod pancakes the WLIB on a kickout block to create a big lane for Forte to get down to the goal line…after another PI call the Bears decide to run it in…on Bush’s first attempt to get in Carimi pancakes the LE…on Bush’s 2nd attempt Carimi walls off the LE…Chris Williams is in as a TE and kicks out the OLB giving Bush the space to punch it in…4th series…Bears go 3 & out but Carimi is solid…would like to see him keep his weight over his heels a little more in pass pro as he could be susceptible to a good rip move…5th series…1st play of the 2nd quarter…Carimi again shows how power as a run blocker by pancaking the LE…the play is designed as a counter so Forte runs off to his left but had he been running a dive or off tackle to the right he would have had a bit of space to work…after a couple of 1st downs the Bears are called for a penalty that leaves them in 2nd & 20…the OLB tries a pure speed rushing move by running the arc…Carimi shows a good kickslide and balance waiting till the OLB is level with him before extending his arms and pushing him to the ground…Jay then steps up and hit’s Hester down the field for a 1st down…2nd & 10 and Jay finds Forte for a big reception…on this play Carimi shows really good feet to match Mathis coming off the edge on the speed rush…Mathis then tries to undercut Carimi’s slide but Gabe readjusts…gets under Mathis’s pads and stops him in his tracks…on the next play Jay finds Marshall for the score…6th series…after Jennings 1st INT…1st down…Carimi does a great job against the LE in pass pro…mirrors him well before locking up on him and putting him on the ground allowing Jay to find Marshall down field…after a few more 1st downs the Bears face 3rd & 11…they try and trick the Colts by running the draw…Carimi mauls Mathis on this play…he matches the speed rush then when Mathis reads the run and starts to work back down the field Carimi matches his move then throws him to the ground…the Bears kick the field goal…this is the first series where Carimi looked 100% confident…we have to remember he is all but a rookie…early game he was solid but in this series he looked a little special…7th series…1st down…again Carimi dominates the OLB in pass protection…mirrors him…gets his body in front of the rusher…locks up and it’s all over…Jay completes a long pass down field to TE Kyle Adams…the following play…again mirrors Mathis before he tries a spin move to the inside but Carimi has taking a perfect angle and Mathis just spins into Carimi’s other shoulder…on the next play Mathis shows why he has been so good for so long…he gives Carimi the slightest of fakes to the inside before going outside on the speed rush…the fake causes Carimi to close the distance between his feet which leaves him in a terrible situation to deal with such speed…he bends at the waist to try and get to Mathis but he is too quick for him…Jay see’s that both OLBs are coming hard and steps up and away from the pressure but with Mathis getting a hand on Jay it goes down as Carimi’s 2nd pressure allowed…3rd & 10…this time Mathis tries the inside move…he gets nowhere…Carimi locks him up and his rush is over…Jay completes the pass downfield for the 1st…on the next series Carimi is solid allowing Jay to find Bennett downfield to take us to the 1 yard line…on Bush’s 2nd down run Carimi shows power against the LE by standing him up…Bush goes in on the left hand side of the line but it was Carimi who had the most impressive block…8th series…1st play of the 2nd half…Bush takes the hand off to the right…Carimi does another impressive job of sealing the LE…Kellen Davis kicks out on the LOLB…and Bush has nothing but green in front of him for a big gain…the rest of the series is very solid for Gabe and Forte runs it in for the score…9th series…on Hester end around Carimi shows a better motor than any of our other Olinemen…the Bears line slide right to sell the RB run…Carimi is out as far at the numbers on the right hand side…when Hester takes it to the left Gabe continues to work running back to the numbers on the left hand side before Hester is tackled…the Bears offence can’t pick up the 1st so we kick the field goal…10th series…another 3 & out for the Bears but Carimi was solid…11th series…Bears go 3 & out again but Carimi does a nice job all round…12th series…another very solid outing for Carimi as Jay hit’s Alshon for the long TD…13th series…another nice job blocking down on the LE to give Bush the chance to run outside of him for a big gain…but it’s called back for a holding penalty on Davis…Bears run the ball another 3 time with Carimi looking solid throughout…14th series…Jennings picks off Luck…Bears knee down for the win…

Overall…Carimi is all but a rookie after missing so much time last year…going against a guy like Robert Mathis it would have been realistic to have been worried…Mathis throw a lot at Carimi…inside & outside spin moves…rip, swim & club moves…dip moves…speed arc…Mathis went through the whole repertoire of moves…for Carimi to come out of the game given up only 2 pressures and a false start penalty is a pretty solid start…he was solid in pass pro and when you add in that he was very good as a run blocker and we couldn’t have asked for much more out of Gabe…very solid start.

excellent news! both that you're doing the write-ups and that Webb turned in a solid game.

i didnt hear his name called once except for the commentator saying "i havent had to mention Webb" but i didnt know he turned out such a good game.

Wow, I knew he had played well but after reading that I now know he was superb. To completely dominate a player like Dwight Freeney (until he was injured) is seriously impressive. I imagine he will have his ups and downs over the year but this is a fantastic start. Good stuff on the analysis MM90! Very Happy

4 more to come.
This is what I have expected from him. And it will only get better. People have to realize that this guy has only started at that position in the NFL for a year. Far too many believe unless there is instant success the player is a bum. They are going to be stunned when our line turns out to be one of the best in the league this year.

You got that right. Let's not get ahead of ourselves here. I'll settle for them being average against a team that isn't terrible before I make pronouncements like that.

My Eyes Laughing

I just rewatch the game focusing on whichever player I’m doing a write up for…with the new condensed games on the NFL game pass it doesn’t take as long as the Oline scouting did a few years back…thankfully lol.

It was a really impressive right up.

I was at the game and I watched Webb a lot and he played a strong game in both phases.

If he can continue this solid play we could have a monster season on offense.

I also thought Carimi was impressive at RT.

I liked that J'Marcus Webb was jawing with some of the Indi players this past Sunday. Those five guys up front have been so disrespected over the past few years, they need to show that they're not going to get pushed around.
