From what I've read/heard (haven't looked into him too much) about Buchanan he might be a good fit. This draft does look kind of meh to me as well but I thought the same about last draft too. |
He's not a "freak" athlete, but he's certainly got more athleticism than we have with Kruger/Upshaw/Suggs in terms of overall speed.
That being said, Buchanan seems more explosive than I remember seeing from Mercilus on tape... plus his length makes him more of a threat. He could be a pass rusher in that Jason Taylor mold if he develops. _________________

I think so. Mainly because I don't really think we're going to spend any kind of money. Kruger is going to get paid a minimal of around what JJ got paid, largely because he's younger and a pass rushing skillset is considered more valuable than run stuffing. So I'm thinking about $5-6m/year, maybe more if someone just has money to blow and feel like making some dumb signings to make it look like their team has made some big improvements.
But I would rather us let Kruger walk for a $4-6m/year contract and take our chances with the draft. Personally I think, like coordinator0 we need a more explosive athlete coming off the edge for a different look. All of our pass rushers are virtually the same kind of player. I'd rather we search out for some diversity via the draft. _________________

I definitely agree that we need more explosiveness off the edge. Right now we have ZERO explosiveness. Kruger/McClellan/Upshaw are all pretty much the same player except McClellan plays the run better, Kruger is better in coverage, and Upshaw is a giant "?" at everything right now.
We need guys that are fast and explosive! We need, dare I say it, Antwan Barnes _________________

I'm liking what I see from Upshaw in terms of setting the edge and tracking down the ball-carrier. McClellan has looked good in that too. Kruger is kind of an odd mix at SAM where he's good at dropping back in coverage but isn't a factor against the run or setting the edge and like db424 mentioned earlier he's probably better off as a role-player rather than a starter. Maybe starting Upshaw and McClellan while bringing Kruger in as a pass-rush specialist would improve things.

I definitely think it would, because McCllelan and Upshaw are both run stoppers and have played well this year, whereas Kruger is a pass rusher sepcialist (albeit not very good, but whatever).
The thing I was angry about was McCllelan played his best game against Philly and then just because Kruger came back we benched him in favor of Kruger. McCllelan has played very well this year and should be rewarded, not benched. _________________

Yeah what I would be hoping for is Kruger starting to look better as a pass-rusher by coming in periodically instead of staying out on the field the whole game. Pretty much like what we saw last season. Although not having Suggs across from Kruger is surely making an impact too and now the opposing offenses can focus more on him.

I agree with that type of role. And Kruger would actually get more time than last year because Upshaw has proven that he's not a 100% snaps kind of guy, like a JJ, but moreso a guy that you need to give a breather every now and again. So Kruger could still see starter minutes, really. Because:
a) He'd play 3rd downs over McCllelan, which is 1/3 defensive snaps.
b) Gives Upshaw a rest on, say.. 25% of his defensive snaps during 1st/2nd. That's still a good 50% of defensive snaps.
I wonder how Kruger would take such a "demotion". _________________

Attention everyone, there has been a depth chart change:
http://www.baltimoreravens.com/team/depth-chart-2012.html
Upshaw is now the starter at Rush and McClellan, formerly starting at Rush, is now the starter at Sam moving ahead of Kruger who has been moved over to Rush.
Someone is getting it!! _________________

I'm not going to get too excited until I see what the rotation will actually look like with Upshaw and McClellan starting but it's a start in the right direction (based on what we've seen from those players so far this season). McClellan has surprised me with his ability to set the edge so I'm not going to worry about him at SAM and I would bet that Upshaw is a better pass-rusher so he's a better fit for RUSH.

If he plays the rest of the season like he did today then yes. I for one am pleased with his performance this season.

He was good getting off blocks and after the RB today but he's yet to really be effective rushing the passer (what they need him to do most). I think the team is going to end up re-signing Kruger if he keeps playing like this though since he won't command a big contract.
