With the addition of the 2nd wild card, this year's September stretch run could be as exciting as last year's. I thought perhaps the forum could use a place to discuss the races and the teams involved, as well as observations from the games/series that will turn the tide.
NOTE: Forum mods, feel free to close this if it's not within your plan/design. I forget I can't just make "official" threads whenever I want now _________________

If Detroit loses to Cleveland tonight I might just give up hope for the playoffs. We get swept by the Royals (with two great pitching performances - 1-0 and 2-1 losses), then we come back and sweep the White Sox the very next series and look great. Tied for the division lead with a ton of momentum, we have now lost the first two games of a home series with another mediocre team because we can't score any flipping runs (two 3-2 losses so far). Ubaldo is pitching tonight against Fister, which is another game we should have no problem winning. If we can't get 4+ on Jimenez, I don't even know what to think.
Btw, Rick Porcello has lost his last five starts. His last four have been games that have been scored at 3-2, 2-1, 2-1, and 3-2. 7 of Detroit's last 8 losses (which have come all in the last 16 games - 13 if you take away the CWS sweep) have been by one run. The other was a two run game. It's been an aggravating stretch, to say the least. _________________

As it currently stands, the playoffs would look like this:
AL East: New York Yankees (1 game lead)
AL Central: Chicago White Sox (1 game lead)
AL West: Texas Rangers (5 game lead)
Wild Cards: Baltimore Orioles, Oakland Athletics (tied)
Outside Looking In: Tampa Bay Rays (1.5 GB), Los Angeles Angels (2.5 GB), Detroit Tigers (3 GB)
NL East: Washington Nationals (7.5 game lead)
NL Central: Cincinnati Reds (8.5 game lead)
NL West: San Francisco Giants (4.5 game lead)
Wild Cards: Atlanta Braves (#1 WC by 3 games over StL), St. Louis Cardinals
Outside Looking In: Los Angeles Dodgers (1.5 GB), Pittsburgh Pirates (1.5 GB)
Which teams are you currently ready to call a lock to make the playoffs?
Which teams do you expect to fall out of the race, and who do you expect to overtake them? Really looking to get an idea of how everyone handicaps these races at this point. _________________

Reds and Nats. Rangers are a close bet to being a lock too. _________________

Big sweep of the Tigers by the Angels this weekend. They're rolling at the moment, and there is a huge 4 game series this week with Oakland coming to town. Should be fun. _________________

Man, i hope my A's make the playoffs this season. None of my teams have made the playoffs in like 10 years it seems. And that's not much of a stretch. It'd mean so much lol _________________

Locks (not as in no chance they miss, but I feel like I can project them making it with some semblance of certainty):
Nationals
Reds
Braves
Giants
Rangers
Yankees
Probable:
Angels
Iffy:
White Sox (really have not been playing well lately, and they still have series against LAA, Detroit, and Tampa)
LAD/STL (it's kinda 50/50 on these teams at this point, but the four game series coming up this weekend in LA is nothing short of humongous)
Rays/Orioles (same as LAD/STL: a lot can be decided by the remaining series, but it wouldn't surprise me to see the Red Sox try to return last year's favor to the Orioles in their two remaining series)
Won't get in:
Pirates (14-25 over last 39 games; they just look horrible on all fronts)
Athletics (crazy you say?! Their remaining schedule is brutal: 4 @ Angels, 3 v. Orioles, 3 @ Tigers, 3 @ Yankees, 4 @ Rangers, 3 v. Mariners, 3 v. Rangers)
Final predictions...
NL Division winners - Nats, Reds, Giants
NL Wild Card winners - Braves, Cardinals
AL Division winners - Yankees, Tigers, Rangers
AL Wild Card winners - Angels, Rays _________________

^^ Tigers suck. They can't score runs unless they're at home/apparently nowadays only against the White Sox. Huge four game series starting tonight with them, unfortunately it's away from Comerica which means we probably lose 3 of 4 and effectively end our season. _________________

I am rooting for nothing more than the Brewers to have a huge run at the wild card but if the Orioles and A's make the playoffs, at least I'll have a couple teams to root for |
