twas a joke about the Blount thing. Jennings will get tagged if he hasn't been extended by then. No way in the world we trade him this year. Why wouldn't we put the tag on him and how is Flynn not getting the tag mean anything? |
as a tag and trade scenario. I'm expecting Jennings to pursue "elite WR money", and personally I don't think his role in the offense is worth a larger contract than Vincent Jackson (although I think he's better). If he's looking for 11-12 mil a year, that would mean Jennings would be in the neighborhood of Finley+Nelson+Jones contract wise. It's just not a great way to spend money. |
Hypothetically, let's say Jennings wishes to retire a Packer. He knows he has the greatest chance at a true legacy here, best shot at the HOF, best shot at rings and more endorsements as this team is in it for the long haul. His family loves the Packers, all his friends play here, etc, etc.
So he decides to take a "hometown" discount. Which still equates to about 10m a season, since the market by next offseason will likely price players of his talent around 13-14 (thanks, Lions). Now, his last contract averaged 7m per season. It would essentially be saying to pay 3m more per season to keep Jennings. That's all it adds to the cap. 3m more than what he effects the cap now. Keep Aaron, Jordy, Cobb, Driver, MM, TC, and everyone else happy. Show young players that if you work hard and don't complain, you will be rewarded.
That 3m is worth it in the fact alone that Clay, BJ, Aaron, and other future free agents know that if they don't hold out, they will be rewarded. If they do, then they'd likely be shown the door later on when they need the team (peace out, Ryan Grant. Hope your holdout was worth it).
I really don't see any way that we let him go unless he becomes increasingly vocal about his contract and becomes a distraction. Then they will make an example of him the opposite way. Luckily, that isn't Greg.

We can give Greg 11-12 million a year if we want, we just have to back-load it to when the new TV revenue kicks in. If he makes a little more in the next year than he made this year, it won't hurt our cap all too much. Problem is, the Packers have little to no bad contracts, Driver will have to be cut next year and AJ Hawk won't allow us to save much. Problems of having a talented team....

Woodson is a guy we need to approach about a re-structure. He's making DPOY money, he's still a great player, but not worth the money at his age.

His cap number goes way down next season. I think it goes from 11 to 7.5. He's just in a balloon year.

yah, i think he should be making around 6M a year. i think he is around 10M...thats a lot of space

Agreed. Not sure if you can do that to him though. Didn't he pretty much come to Green Bay for the money anyway? Not sure if Woodson is the take a pay cut type player although in a perfect world it would be great.
Also a Nelson hold out wouldn't be crazy if he has another season like last year

Rotoworld has him at 10 million for the next 2 seasons.
