Collins started out as a defensive back for Southern Miss but moved to linebacker for his sophomore year. From what I have read he is moving to defensive end for his senior year although I think it is fair to say his best position as an NFL prospect is more than likely as a 4-3 weakside OLB. What strikes me is his playmaking ability, he seems to have a nose for the ball and seems to be able to put himself in position to take advantage of turnovers and create them himself.
Below is an interesting article about his background and early struggles. By appearances, he seems like a high character, hard working prospect that is willing to take on new responsibilities (3 position changes) and the effort to improve.
| Quote: | Southern Miss defensive end Jamie Collins knows a thing or two about adversity.
After his parents died by the time he was age 6, Collins was raised by his sister Lisa, who was only in her early 20s.
"It was pretty tough, man," Collins said. "It's not like I grew up spoiled or anything like that. I'm the baby of five. It was real rough, me coming up.
"I had so much adversity coming up so adversity is nothing to me. I've fought and fought. I sort of like adversity. I believe that's what really wakes me up."

I've talked to a Southern Miss fan as their team plays Nebraska this week and this is how he speaks:
"So this saturday, Jamie Collins, we're going down to the, Jamie Collins, bar to watch the game. If you're going to be watching, look out for my boy, Jamie Collins, Jamie Collins."
So I guess Southern Miss fans are in love with him. This fan said that he hads played at all levels of defense while at Southern Miss (dline, lb, db) and has excelled, so he must be very versatile. |

LOL
Yeah, his versatility definitely jumped out at me when I was looking into him as a prospect. The more I read up on him, the more he strikes me as a 4-3 weakside OLB. I am wondering if he could potentially fill a 3-4 ILB role similar to the one Derrick Johnson currently does for the Chiefs - good sideline range, very athletic both as a pass defender and can also track the ball well across the line. His initial experience as a defensive back could help him in understanding coverage concepts and handling coverage assignments as a linebacker. _________________

a snippet of what this Southern Miss has said about Collins:
| Quote: | | Jamie Collins is our best defensive player and one of the best in the country. You probably just laughed when I said that, but I'm not done. 6'4" 245 running a 4.5. He played safety his first year b/c of injuries. He was moved to DE then to LB and now plays something of a hybrid in between. I've many experts on ESPN and everywhere label him the best pass rusher in the 2013 draft class and also has to quickness and speed to drop back and defend the pass. |

Definitely. I really think that the Jamie Collins' lead Eagles will be upset this week by us. |

With all the position switching, what is his best role for a team looking at him?
3-4 OLB
4-3 DE
4-3 OLB _________________

34 OLB.
He can play DE, but I think his burst is better as an OLB.
I just don't know if he has the awareness to play OLB in the 43.
He is a fringe top-50 player, and should be a first round lock when it is all said and done. _________________

1 - He has good size and is athletic,
2 - Kid can rush the passer and has very good fluidity and short area quickness,
3 - Those things combined with production usually lead to,
4 - Probable first round selection. _________________ Patrick Peterson - 92 targets, 40 catches allowed, 602 yards, 6 TD's, 7 INT's

On face value, he looks like a more athletic KJ Wright. _________________
