I'm a Rams fan and think the main goal of this trade from the Rams point of view was to save 1.55 million this year.
I've only paid attention to Hunter in the preseason game this year with the Giants and he was truly awful. He did best when protected with two TE's but the first time he was left alone with JPP, he was hit so hard he actually did a spin move while Pierre-Paul took Sanchez down.
Smith actually had a worse play in Saturday's game against the Cowboys. He played most of the second half and you can see it on the NFL channel later today.
I think Smith has more athletic ability than Hunter. When he lets the DE come to him and stays balanced and uses his long arms, he can be an effective player. His tendency has been to attack the DE and get knocked off balance. He doesn't have the skill to recover. He is a hustler. He is a decent run blocker, especially if used as Hunter was. He isn't very good in space, seems to have balance problems. He is a terrible cut blocker. He will get penalties if beaten.
Smith suffered a serious injury last year. He suffered a spinal injury when his head drove into the leg of an opposing player and at the same time was kicked in the head. That finished him for the season and created doubt about him continuing his career.
He was a TE and a LT in college. I think he is better than the Rams starter, Barry Richardson. He is a bright and likeable guy and I think he will be a decent player for you if he stays healthy. |

Its a fair deal. He has more upside but I honestly dont see him working out here either. This is a blocking scheme that requires more size then the spread or the ZBS and hes not the biggest guy. Hes going to be a max protector and thats honestly it. We still need to look for a potential starter although Howard did look encouraging the other night. _________________

This is just good news, was the trade straight up player for player? Hunter was terrible. We got a guy with great potential and if it doesn't work we have the 31% of snaps contract clause. _________________

I like it. Obviously we weren't going to get a top tier tackle or anything, so this type of move was pretty much exactly what I was hoping for. A relatively low risk high reward deal, and we get to wash our hands of Wayne Hunter. But I feel like some people here are getting a little too confident in Howard. He looked good, but it was one preseason game. I'm as hopeful as anybody that he will be legit, and it wouldn't shock me, but it's not like he completely solves our right tackle issue. _________________

Mike Tannenbaum says the Jets reworked Smith's deal so that the Rams would pay the additional 1.5 in bonus form, and the Jets will pay him Hunter's salary. Tanny on the job... _________________

Tanny is the best when it comes to working new contracts, but he just have to do a better job in filling the needs and building the offense through the draft. _________________

We didn't pay extra. His deal was reworked so we're only paying him $2.45M. Not bad. _________________

Mulligan is on the Rams too?
If we lose to the Rams, I'm probably gonna shoot myself in the face. _________________

Weren't Orakpo AND Kerrigan out for the game though?
He pretty much went up against backups all game.
Smith hasn't really been noticeable. He comes in as a jumbo TE sometimes, but the Jets really haven't had a ton of success with that yet.
Howard has been doing a great job though, completely erasing Mario Williams and allowing one sack to Woodley. _________________
