Every year there are a few many of us didn't see coming. Last year Xavier Adibi getting waived probably qualifies as the biggest surprise since he actually had a pretty good preseason and DeMeco still was returning from injury. Dorin Dickerson wasn't a surprise to me, but was to many here who had him as a lock as the #4 receiver, better yet #5. Shiloh Keo was a minor surprise as 5th rounders almost always make our roster or are given a year on the IR, but rarely exposed to waivers even if we want em back on the Practice Squad. Slaton making it over Ogbonnaya despite doing nothing in preseason was a bit of a surprise. Waiving Bret Hartmann only to pick him back up 4 days later was just bizarre. Lestar Jean to the IR was another head scratcher since last we had heard he had a minor shoulder injury probably could have coasted thru to the PS and bee ready by week 3.
So who is it going to be this year? A few random guesses:
- Alan Ball makes the roster (I'm telling you it's 50/50 right now)
- Rashad Butler is cut - doesn't make a ton of sense due to a lack of a viable swing tackle, but he is getting paid $1.3 million to backup a 6th rounder and maybe they think Gardner and Menkin are good enough.
- Troy Nolan is cut - I know I've been saying this for a while, but I think I'm the only one who thinks this is a serious possibility.
- Andrew Gardner makes the team - I may be the only one who has typed his name on this website, but I get the feeling he's got a little Mike Brisiel in him.
- Brandon Brooks doesn't make it - now this is a major longshot, but if you take the draft position out of the equation, there is no way he has earned a spot and he's an awkward fit on this line. Doubt he get's cut, but I can see a season ending hang nail in his future. _________________

Heres a major surprise
We either keep 4 rbs OR we keep Grimes at 3 and we make Forsett an inactive gameday player each week....
Grimes is a major bonus for special teams and has show his ability to help us on offense, we either keep them both or we keep Grimes over Forsett _________________

Is Trindon Holliday being cut a surprise at this point? Because AA pretty much assured that when he adopted him
But seriously, after those fumbles I don't think it's the lock it once seemed like _________________

The Head Coach has been on record multiple times stating that he doesn't like having a return specialist that can't contribute in other areas and it's no secret that the Holliday pick was a bit of a bone thrown to Joe Marciano. He is definitely giving Holliday every chance to prove him wrong, and I'm a bit surprised that he's gone exclusively with him returning both punts and kickoffs in the PS (although Manning doesn't likely need any reps on kickoffs). I haven't seen Holliday even line up at WR, so I think it's a matter of Kubiak resigning to the fact that returns stunk last year and it's time for a different approach and Holliday finally seizing the opportunity. Fumbles impact is minimized by the primary other option on punt returns, Keshawn Martin, fumbling twice as well.
Personally, I still believe that returns are a massively overrated aspect of the game especially with kickoffs being minimized due to rules changes. I was proven RIGHT yet again with Jacoby in the playoffs hurting us far more than an extra few extra yards on returns ever got us. Only 9 teams got even 1 kickoff return touchdown last year and only 15 got a punt return TD. No team got more than one kickoff return for a td and only the Cardinals (4), Bears (2), and Broncos (2) got more than 1 punt return for a TD. Returns may be one of the most exciting plays in the game, but in terms of field position, minimizing holding penalties or illegal blocking penalties has far greater impact. As far as I'm concerned, 1 turnover in returns costs you as much as you get with 1 return TD so for most teams, even 1 turnover is 1 too many. I would instruct punt returners to fair catch anything but the worst line drives and kickoff returners to take a knee on every single ball in the end zone. As far as I'm concerned, with our offense, it doesn't matter if we start at the 20 or 25 which is about the difference between the best and worst. I prefer the ball in Matt or Arian's hands to get that 5 yards, not some 5' 5" gimmick. _________________

Butler stays with us no doubt at all, it doesnt really matter that we are paying a back up good money when we are paying a starter bad money, we might no have him on the roster next season but he will stay on this year and might actually be a top 5 back up tackle in the NFL _________________

The interesting thing I've heard about Holliday is that if we cut him there will probably be 30 teams lining up to get him because he is such a weapon and another team may want to utilize his skills on their offense as well as make him their return man. Its sort of a "draft a guy before the team that picks right after you takes him" type of deal. There is certainly no one on our roster who has the same skill set as Holliday. I think hes worth the roster spot.
There are usually some surprises when it comes to those cuts before the season. We may sign a guy who gets cut from another team to play RT or DT since Harris is on IR and neither Butler nor Newton have been overly impressive.
The good thing is that heading into week 1 our core is healthy- Arian, Dre, Schaub, OD, Joseph, Antonio, Watt, Cush, Reed & Barwin are ready to play. _________________

I'll throw another surprise out there. If he looks good this week, I can see Loni Fangupo making the initial roster as insurance for Cody and Watt since I only see 6 d-lineman ultimately in the plan (4 DE's, 2 NTs) leaving us pretty thin if either aggravates their injury in week 1. Probably gets cut a week or two into the season and they attempt to get on PS, but he could cost a member of the secondary their job initially (Keo). Alternatively, I can see us combing the waiver wire for an extra versitile d-lineman. _________________

I don't buy that for a second w/Holliday. 31 teams could have signed him away for nothing last year when he was on our practice squad. There are very few teams in the league willing to employ return specialists that don't at least potentially contribute in other areas anymore and he has shown nothing as a receiver in 3 preseasons. I do think he makes the roster, but don't forget Forsett and Manning could easily handle kickoff returns which have minimal impact anymore, so we're really just talking about punt returns which is about 2 per game on average (excluding fair catches). Pretty minimal impact for a roster position in my book when you have a rookie like Martin perfectly capable of doing that job.
His presence on the roster also likely makes Posey a gameday inactive most weeks. _________________

Don't mean to take away your thunder but Butler would not have been cut if he didn't get injured. If he didn't get injured Gardner wouldn't have made the team and Alan Ball staying on the team was obvious but painful to accept from the beginning. The only surprise here is that Troy Nolan got cut. Not even that he got cut, but that he was cut over Keo. _________________
