Do you all remember the WR from Alabama, Prothro, he had a similar injury to this, actually I think the same one, a compound fracture of his leg, and even through extensive rehab he was unable to return and he was supposed to be great and now his career is over. _________________

That's exactly who I was thinking of when I heard Mariani sufferred a broken tibula and fibula. That's why I'm somewhat worried about Mariani playing again. |

If Reynaud proves to be a quality return man and provides even a little value offensively, it's going to be difficult for him to win his job back. And if that happens, it's going to be tough for a guy coming off of a broken leg that only returns kicks to find work. Although I wouldn't be shocked if he ended up in St. Louis a year from now I suppose. |
Those are exactly my thoughts on Mariani's injury. Unfortunately, he doesn't offer much else other than return ability... and even that isn't anything much more than average ability. I know a lot of us love him, but look at the stats...
Last year he ranked 27th in kick returns and 12th in punt returns amongst qualifiers (53rd and 24th overall, counting all players with returns.)
The year before that when he was outstanding in our eyes, he was 10th (24th) in KRs and 10th (13th) in PRs. Just slightly above average.
The market isn't going to be huge for returners who don't offer much else on O nor D coming off a season ending injury. He'll find something... possibly in StL... or another team in need of a steady returner... but Reynaud was already beating him out here in TN this preseason... at least in my eyes. _________________

Not surprised. Hope he can come back strong next season, for us or another team. _________________

| Awful luck for Mariani, I was expecting big things from him on offence, as I still believe in his ability from the slot. Hopefully this is just a minor setback for the guy, but it really did look awful. |

I think he had a lot of potential in the passing game with his speed off of those screen passes. I probably believed in him more than most, so it's sad to think that this could affect his career moving forward. |

Heard an interview with him today. Seems to be in pretty good spirits considering. Said no tendon or ligament damage, and break was far enough away from joints so that plates would not cause problem. Said several months recovery. _________________

"The NFL Management Council and the NFL Players Association have agreed on a new 2012 Bylaw Proposal that will allow teams to bring one designated player off injured reserve to play this season.
If a team chooses to take a player who has already been placed on IR during training camp and designate him as the IR player they want to be able to return later in the season, teams must designate this player by 9 p.m. on Friday." _________________
