He is always the slowest player to react and never seems to get around or through blocks, coverage hasn't been a huge issue so far but what if he is isolated against Gates ? Mad

Can we afford to run that guy out there during the regular season or will we play more nickel package?

I know Curry isn't great either but he is excellent in run defense but i don't see Miles talent so far.

I know it's early in the preaseason and i hope he improves but i'm concerned, BIGTIME.

He's a 4th round prospect from a smallish school. He's forced into action because of injury.

Being overly critical of a prospect who was not drafted to start is just off base.

The guy has is willing and throws himself around. Needs coaching and refinement. That's what he was drafted for. Give him some time. He has some potential.
I'm trying not be overly critical, he just doesn't look like a starter. I get he is a rookie and all, but can we really afford to run him out on the field in his present condition?

I wonder is RM is looking for a LB with late season cuts. I'm not condemning the guy, he might be ready later in the year, next year, maybe not. i just don't think he's ready now and it's clear to see.

I'm sure McKenzie will look at all positions when cut downs happen.

That said, the Raiders D has played well in preseason. I've not noticed this 'clear to see' criticism for Burris. Guys overran some tackles and looked out of control on plays, but he's not exactly DVD running around lost and giving up chunk plays.

Reggie is giving the young guys a really good look in per season otherwise how do you know what you have got. LB is an easy position to fill especially with a vet, Giants won the Superbowl with Chase Blackburn at MLB. To start BIGTIMe criticising 4th round rookies is BIGTIME ridiculous.

He's not just some 4th round rookie on this team, he is slated to be the starting weak side linebacker our 2 down guy. His position is vital to the run defense. And i judge linebackers on things like

Play recgnition- D
Athletic ability- B-
block shedding- D
Tackling- C+
Zone coverage- C

I'm not sure how he looks in man, and he hasn't been sent to get the QB much as he was in college.

IMO he's got the Wimbley feel in coverage and i have not seen anything in run defense.

Maybe he gets better in the next few games, but we will be facing 2 TE's sets during the regular season and we can't hide him if they decide to run counters, Playaction or we blitz and he gets manned up.

I know he is a local guy and he seems to have potential but he doesn't play like a natural linebacker right now.

Even so i will let it just play out, i hope he gets better.

You need to chill.

He's a day 3 draft pick who's had 19 days of NFL practice and 2 preseason games. What exactly were you expecting from him?

I mean, yes I had a man crush on Lavonte David, but the previous regime left us well out of his draft position. So we take we get. IMO, for a 4th round pick, he's doing decently and should continue to grow.

Blows my mind how much fans overreact on players who've had little to no developmental time.

If Burris was touted as a day 1 starting LB, I might be worried. I however knew what they were getting in him. A developmental kid with some potential.

That said, I think an addition will be made to the LB spot should Curry be out an extend amount of time. But in any event, these 1st teams reps are great for this young player.

DVD plays corner though, one miss step or slip and your receiver is gone for a huge gain, usually a TD. Know what I mean?

LB isn't exactly an independent position so even if Burris messes up a huge gain won't necessarily result from it. LB's play in the middle of the field, CB's are basically isolated, especially in man to man. I'm honeslty okay with Burris starting for this very reason. As long as he doesn't get matched up with TE's I don't see a problem with it. He will progress faster if he's playing in regular season games.

Laughing

I can't believe you found that thread.

There was a slight tinge of "tongue in cheek" humor added in.

Besides this is just my current opinion on his play and your overeacting you didn't have to get the nuclear bomb. Embarassed

And Rod Streater is the next Jerry Rice

I'd much rather see Goethel get the start. Burris hasn't shown much in preseason thus far but get blocked out easily on plays. Kilgore has some potential and has a nose for the ball too. Not saying Burris should never see the field but let a guy who has been in camp with us longer and is a bit more polished. If he gets put in coverage we're in trouble though.

I agree, Goethel can recognize plays and appears to play the run well.

I'm a fan of the Burris pick.

He just needs to settle down a bit. He's playing too fast out there to the point he's overrunning plays.

I like his pass rush value he brings. He should be a situational pass rusher for now. Not sure if I'd start him though.

Not bad for a 4th rounder imo.

Knew that was coming. I wasn't comparing the position. Just pointing out a player (DVD) who you can see is a fish out of water playing.

Mainly saying I don't see Burris out there on plays where I'm wondering what the hell is going through his head. He's mixing it up, staying disciplined.

+1. I'm a big Kilgore fan. The guys I'll be watching a lot of tonight are Underwood, Kilgore, Bilukidi, Hamilton and 'Nacho. These are the guys I'm really hoping stick and make it through the first cut at least. I think the only ones in possible danger are Kilgore and Underwood though. Good thing for both though is that they're great on ST, especially Kilgore.

Hamilton and Kidi are two guys I want to see make the team. But there appears to be only room for 1.

I know. Bet you the one that get sent to the PS gets gobbled up by New England or Buffalo. Kind of hoping we keep both and use Bryant more at DE.

DE: Shaggy, Houston, Bryant, Tollefson
DT: Kelly, Seymour, Bilukidi, Hamilton

That's my favorite scenario; we can still slide guys around to give them playing time while keeping those 2. Not sure what to expect out of Crawford and I think he could slip to the PS given his injuries. I feel like I may be forgetting somebody though.
