Just kidding.

But I have read several places that he is quietly having a good camp.

And he has looked good so far.

We know 1 and 2 is hass and locker.

But can rusty be to Locker what billy volek was to McNair?

I'll hang up and listen.

I really do think so. Great character guy, student of the game, and he does have a cannon of an arm. No reason why he can't be a competent backup.

I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up being one of those guys who bounces team from team starting handfuls of games each year.

He seems to have progressed from year to year. That pass to Mariani was a beauty. I'll have confidence in him being Jake's backup when Matt leaves/retires.

Rusty Smith. That game he started back in 2010 against the Texans was painful to watch. Thinking about that day puts me in a bad mood.

Still will never understand why he doesn't go by his real first name of "Russell". Maybe then I wouldn't be embarrassed to have him as our backup. Laughing

In all seriousness, he seems to be getting better, but I'm still holding out judgement before I will say I'm comfortable with him becoming our permanent backup. O'Donnell and Volek showed they were capable of holding down the fort while our starters were out. While Rusty has come a long way, he has yet to show such a thing. He's looked dreadful whenever he's actually gotten on the field in a meaningful game.

Next season I'd like to see him play a few series with the starters in a preseason game. That's the only way we'll see if he's truly progressed from that abortion of a game against the Texans. Let's up the talent level, see if he still performs, and then start calling him our long term solution as a backup.
