Game 1 - Vikings - 1st Quarter

1st and 10 at MIN 20T.Gerhart up the middle to MIN 24 for 4 yards (P.Willis, N.Bowman).
DL took initial jolt but anchored well. Wliis took pop from FB but absorbed and stayed put to clean up the RB

2nd and 6 at MIN 24C.Ponder pass deep middle to S.Burton to SF 24 for 52 yards (C.Rogers). Caught at SF38. 14-yds YAC
Brooks easily beat FB around edge. Aldon quickly edged LT... RJF did well to get upfield vs LG, but because there wsn't enough surge from Ray or Sopo, Ponder stepped up and delivered. Rogers clearly looked at Goldson.. who was 10 yds behind the play... as if he were supposed to have been there with him I doubt Rogers would make an enemy of his FS if that FS wasn't responsible at least in his mind.

1st and 10 at SF 24(Shotgun) C.Ponder pass incomplete short left to J.Simpson.
Brooks looks quick around RT but Ponder's a bit too short in the pocket. Overall pocket closes quickly, but Ponder gets it out quickly. wide open receiver drops pass with Bowman closing in

2nd and 10 at SF 24T.Gerhart left guard to SF 21 for 3 yards (R.Jean Francois).
stout run D from RJF and Sopo

3rd and 7 at SF 21(Shotgun) C.Ponder pass incomplete short right to T.Gerhart.
Brooks beating his RT well.. bit of an awareness + small tug from RT to keep him from getting to QB, but Aldon blazing around the LT edge.. Ponder showing some speed just to roll out away

4th and 7 at SF 21B.Walsh 39 yard field goal is GOOD, Center-C.Loeffler, Holder-C.Kluwe.

1st and 10 at SF 16K.Hunter right tackle to SF 19 for 3 yards (L.Guion).
Boone slips 2nd level... at first misses his LB, but then puts him down easy... pops him right on his arse, lol. AD was great in driving the LE away from hole... Walker and Goodwin did enough chipping at their guys.
Goodwin's guy was aware enough to wrap up RB as he came through

2nd and 7 at SF 19R.Cartwright left end to SF 38 for 19 yards (L.Guion, M.Raymond).

key blocks here were far weakside... VD great seal block on ILB.. Miller smashes oncoming FS no problem.. Ginn with some effective downfield blocking on CB. Boone slipped 2nd level quickly to take an OLB out.. The other OLB attacked the middle OL and was swallowed up by Iupati

1st and 10 at SF 38(Shotgun) K.Hunter up the middle to SF 40 for 2 yards (C.Ballard).
Boone slips 2nd level quickly... didn't matter.. play was done that quickly... AD failed to sustain slight pull block on the LDT. Crabtree also couldn't block out the DB in time, but it wasn't going anywhere after AD lost block

2nd and 8 at SF 40A.Smith pass short left to M.Crabtree to SF 43 for 3 yards (C.Carr). Caught at SF43. 0-yds YAC
3 step drop quick throw... CB played well off but closed very quickly

3rd and 5 at SF 43(Shotgun) A.Smith scrambles left guard to SF 47 for 4 yards (C.Greenway).
overload strongside forces Alex to take off.. Staley and mostly Iupati should have contained the RDT # 99 better... Alex would have had a clean lane to either run or pull up for a pass. The good news is that the C, RG, RT all picked up the right blocks.. Perhaps Alex could have stayed in that pocket for another second to throw.. maybe that's a trust issue for now with OL. Most athletic QBs would have probably taken off when seeing what was surging at him though. Ideally you trust your OL and stay put. Really should have worked out fine had # 99 not been free and in Alex's face.

4th and 1 at SF 47B.Jacobs up the middle to 50 for 3 yards (E.Henderson, M.Raymond).
Boone was AWESOME here... bullying his way through the DL and then getting bits of LB as he made his way through... Goodwin almost beaten horribly but did just enough to stop the surge that was overwhelming him. AD did enough, as did VD.. awkward for AD as his man was with back to him from dealing with Boone.. glad no flag there. Miller free and quick through hole, but not much left to take on, lolz.. gets one lil chip on a LB

1st and 15 at SF 45(Shotgun) K.Hunter left end pushed ob at MIN 41 for 14 yards (J.Sanford).
very clever designed run off LT side... key blocks were Dixon at RB/FB dive blocking to slow up RDE... Iupati pulls to wipe out DB outside.. Swain chips OLB enough... Staley gets 2nd level, misses him but dives for his legs from side/or a bit behind to take him down (often gets called as illegal block).. 2nd play where Goodwin initially gets blown back, but does just enough to recover

2nd and 1 at MIN 41B.Jacobs right tackle pushed ob at MIN 18 for 23 yards (J.Sanford). Timeout #1 by SF at 07:17.
Boone just plunges/dives into LDT and causes havoc in that area... AD and Celek put a solid seal-block hurting on the LDE and LOLB. Walker effective to open hole by sealing off outside DB.. Miller makes key block on ILB. Jacobs showing speed and quicks like I'd never seen from him.

1st and 10 at MIN 18A.Smith pass short right to K.Hunter to MIN 9 for 9 yards (E.Henderson). Caught at MIN20. 11-yds YAC
AD lets the LDE get way too close to Alex on this screen... decent job from Goodwin and Iupati to get out and block downfield... great hustle from LB to chase RB down

2nd and 1 at MIN 9B.Jacobs up the middle to MIN 7 for 2 yards (F.Evans).
Boone wants 2nd level, but helps Goodwin keep RDT at bay... LB dives in to cut Miller down.. by the time Boone gets free to chip the DB, Jacobs is stumbling forward after tripping over Miller's carcass in the hole. VD and AD did their jobs. Walker never engaged his man as he should have, but it didn't much matter

1st and 7 at MIN 7K.Hunter left tackle to MIN 4 for 3 yards (E.Henderson, J.Brinkley).
Staley keeps RDE away for most part... Iupati effective on sealing RDT, but then moves on to others? Miller whacks the LB, but LB recovers to make tackle anyway. AD trying to keep ILB, but Iupati's sudden presence makes that impossible..As large as he is, Boone is hard to locate here... lots of bodies everywhere, lol.

2nd and 4 at MIN 4A.Smith pass short left to B.Swain for 4 yards, TOUCHDOWN.
3 step drop... throws immediately. I thought it was risky placement, but the CB never turns to expect or locate the ball coming. I would have liked another foot of air underneath the ball, but this is Brett Swain, so... you put it where you best hope he can get it.

1st and 10 at MIN 24T.Gerhart left end to MIN 27 for 3 yards (Ald.Smith, N.Bowman).
RJF fast through middle as LG pulls weakside.. Aldon evades block + flies in and nearly gets RB.. Whitner flies in to disrupt blocks.. Bowman scrapes along quickly

2nd and 7 at MIN 27C.Ponder scrambles left end to MIN 30 for 3 yards (Ald.Smith).
RJF penetrates well, but Ponder uses feet and angles well to stay alive.. Aldon stays clean to track down QB..Willis and Sopo close in. Aldon now clearly limping... seemed hurt from play prior

3rd and 4 at MIN 30(Shotgun) C.Ponder pass short right to K.Rudolph to MIN 38 for 8 yards (D.Whitner). Caught at MIN 34. 4-yds YAC
TE gets away with a bit of a push-off on Whitner.. Ray was pushing center pocket, but Ponder liked read 1 quickly

1st and 10 at MIN 38T.Gerhart left tackle to MIN 43 for 5 yards (P.Willis, P.Haralson).
RJF goes edge on LT but that helps open designed run lane... Haralson dropped deep zone, also helping RB..

2nd and 5 at MIN 43C.Ponder pass short right to K.Rudolph to SF 43 for 14 yards (C.Rogers). Caught at SF 46. 3-yds YAC
Ray gets a decent push, but gets washed out a bit by RT... Bowman on delayed blitz gets snuffed out. 4 OL left wall off RJF and Sopo well... Brooks pushing FB back towards QB, but not in time. Whitner trailing TE closely, but overall, outmatched a little.

1st and 5 at SF 38C.Ponder pass short left to M.Jenkins to SF 32 for 6 yards (N.Bowman). Caught at SF 36. 4-yds YAC
quick burst from RJF but gets doubled... Sopo pushes pocket but can't get bat-down... Ray also pushes RG back well.. just a quick enough pass vs soft or broken Bowman coverage

1st and 10 at SF 32C.Ponder scrambles left tackle to SF 28 for 4 yards.
pressure from Brooks closes in... Ray nicely shoving RT back to QB.. but Ponder uses feet to run.. Sopo doubled can't disengage up middle..

2nd and 6 at SF 28(Shotgun) C.Ponder pass incomplete short left to S.Burton.
quick pass in tight window between Haralson zone and Brown.. dropped... got scurred. no real time for much pressure

3rd and 6 at SF 28T.Gerhart right end to SF 12 for 16 yards (R.McDonald).
great job by Brooks to scrape along, but he misses the tackle.. Vikes took advantage of our overload weakside.. sloppy missed tackle Goldson late... bit too much ground to cover for Bowman...

End of 1st Quarter

... to be continued later.

I saw Rogers in man coverage on the play in which he and Goldson were staring at each other, in fact during the broadcast Tim Ryan mentioned the same thing so, as much as it may have appeared that Goldson was to blame it seems more on Rogers to me

I re-watched it, and I'm not sure what Goldson could have done on that play. Only way he's to blame is if he was out of position. He seemed to be shallow left, maybe Rogers thought he was supposed to be deep center, but we'll never know. What we do know is that Rogers got beat and there was nothing Goldson could do from then on.

Yeah it seemed that Goldson was responsible for underneath and the flat, I don't think he was out of position unless like you said he was supposed to be deep center or spying the middle

2nd Quarter

1st and 10 at SF 12(Shotgun) L.Hilliard right guard to SF 8 for 4 yards (D.Goldson).
Ray hammered by double, but he somehow anchors.. ILBs converge after fighting blocks..

2nd and 6 at SF 8C.Ponder pass incomplete short left to J.Wright.
no heavy pressure... Ray and RJF doubled. Haralson chopped low. Brooks gets a bit upfield on RT... Ponder just doesn't like his options and throws it in the stands.

3rd and 6 at SF 8(Shotgun) C.Ponder pass incomplete short left to M.Jenkins.
4 rush and pocket gradually closes from all around.. soft coverage behind targets. Nice close from Brown to help dislodge catch, though may have been dropped anyway.

4th and 6 at SF 8B.Walsh 26 yard field goal is GOOD, Center-C.Loeffler, Holder-C.Kluwe.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1st and 10 at SF 20C. Kaepernick in at QB. (Shotgun) K.Hunter right tackle to SF 22 for 2 yards (C.Ballard).
play started before camera adjusted to snap... looks like Boone initially missed 2nd level block, but RB had already passed the penetrating LB.. AD and Goodwin did well in opening up some kind of lane... Swain missed his DB block..

2nd and 8 at SF 22(No Huddle, Shotgun) C.Kaepernick right end for 78 yards, TOUCHDOWN.
LB and LDE severely bought into the RB fake-hand-off. Swain blocked enough to spring Ck7, and the mere presence of ... Reuland downfield kept the S from closing in on time
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1st and 10 at MIN 10J.Webb in at QB for Minn. L.Hilliard right end to MIN 12 for 2 yards (L.Grant).
Gooden did well in slicing penetration up middle.. Haralson fought of edge block well to get in run lane... RJF anchors perfectly.. Grant anticipates well and cleans up

2nd and 8 at MIN 12J.Webb scrambles right end pushed ob at MIN 18 for 6 yards (I.Sopoaga).
good edge rush Haralson, but FB and QB athleticism wins here.. Sopo running to sideline like this is the SB!

3rd and 2 at MIN 18(Shotgun) J.Webb pass incomplete short right to M.Jenkins.
Dobbs with good edge rush... RJF pushes mid-pocket well.. poor pass accuracy there
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1st and 10 at MIN 40C.Kaepernick sacked at MIN 46 for -6 yards (F.Evans).
The strongside OL from C to TE got beaten (except for pulling big Leonard D)... at the POA... Celek was pushed back.. Wiggins got put on his arse.. helping to collapse Kilgore, and allowing RDT penetration... also LD's fault for looking to help outside and allowing RDT a path to Ck7. Ck7 had a wide open Reuland 8-9 yds in front of him, but was looking to evade and run rather than keeping eyes downfield.. understandable given the heat, but still...

2nd and 16 at MIN 46(Shotgun) C.Kaepernick pass short right to K.Williams to MIN 42 for 4 yards (M.Sherels). Caught at MIN 43. 1-yd YAC
quick misdirection and quick short throw.. nothing very notable

3rd and 12 at MIN 42(Shotgun) C.Kaepernick pass incomplete deep right to A.Jenkins (Z.Bowman).
Person at LT allowed a bit much edge rush for my liking, but Ck7 stepped up in pocket well.. James on swing-route wide open with room and Reuland open on drag, but Ck7 locked too long on a very well covered AJJ. Lucky to not be INT there.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1st and 10 at MIN 5J.Webb pass short right to R.Ellison to MIN 17 for 12 yards (C.Spillman). Caught at MIN 17. 0-yds YAC
Ian Willimas doubled at NT... spies QB.. decent upfield rush coming from Dobbs and Bakhtiara... good penetration from RJF. Caught despite very tight Spillman coverage

1st and 10 at MIN 17L.Hilliard right guard to MIN 21 for 4 yards (C.Spillman).
RJF rushed wide, but run was inside of his path.. Ian W was pretty stout vs C.. gave up very little... Dobbs also held ground well. Spillman came down into the box and helped. Solid clogging by Gooden and Grant

2nd and 6 at MIN 21L.Hilliard left end to MIN 23 for 2 yards (E.Bakhtiari).
good awareness by Bakhtiari after initial rush.. who stopped his QB rush as he recognized weakside toss... great job Ian W, Grant, and Spillman to converge on RB

3rd and 4 at MIN 23(Shotgun) J.Webb pass incomplete short left to D.Aromashodu [D.Dobbs].
nice rush coming again from Bakhtiari and Dobbs weakside
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1st and 10 at SF 42L.James left end to SF 43 for 1 yard (L.Dean).
Person moved out in space well for his pull block... swallowed up a DB... big Dix got a pop on LB as lead blocker... Leonard D (LD) was a bit late coming over... Kyle W was soft on his LB block and the LB easily disengaged to make tackle... Celek missed his block... really nowhere for LMJ to go.

2nd and 9 at SF 43C.Kaepernick pass short right to K.Williams to MIN 49 for 8 yards (B.Burton). Caught at SF 44. 7-yds YAC
all went just fine on this one.

3rd and 1 at MIN 49B.Jacobs right guard to MIN 46 for 3 yards (T.McKenzie).
Reuland nicely drove the LDE away... showed good leverage and power. Celek sliced 2nd level to pop a LB... big Dix threw himself into the hole to help... LG Hall pulls well to make a hole as well

1st and 10 at MIN 46K.Williams left end to MIN 47 for -1 yards (H.Smith).
blocking was all around terrible here.. Kilgore easily should have been flagged for a take down.. defense quickly sniffed this one out

2nd and 11 at MIN 47(Shotgun) R.Cartwright left end to MIN 42 for 5 yards (B.Burton).
Person did enough keeping RDE away... Hall gave penetrating LB a shove to keep him away from RB... Kilgore struggled moving DT off, but finally won the battle.. LD did enough to keep other DT away.. nice block from Reuland on LDE away from play.. nice shiftiness from Rock

3rd and 6 at MIN 42(Shotgun) C.Kaepernick scrambles up the middle to MIN 35 for 7 yards (N.Reed).
Cartwright was slow/late picking up extra blitzer... Ck7 uses quickness to evade and run... other than RB, the OL all did well in at least knowing who to block

1st and 10 at MIN 35A.Dixon left tackle to MIN 34 for 1 yard (F.Evans, T.McKenzie).
effective pull block from LD to flatten LB... Left side including Celek and Reuland get initial pops on D, but don't sustain.

2nd and 9 at MIN 34C.Kaepernick pass short right to A.Jenkins to MIN 19 for 15 yards (B.Burton). Caught at MIN 19. 0-yds YAC
blocking was excellent all around.. beauty of a laser pass from Ck7 on a tight covered out.

1st and 10 at MIN 19(Shotgun) L.James up the middle to MIN 16 for 3 yards (L.Dean).
camera is a little late on the snap.. LD walled his man well... pulling RT Wiggins was lazy and didn't sustain LB who made tackle... looked like LMJ stumbled anyway and was on way down. Kilgore, Person, and Hall did well enough keeping hole clear on their side

2nd and 7 at MIN 16C.Kaepernick pass incomplete short right to A.Jenkins.
RDE blazed around edge, but great block by LMJ. Looked like Person did right by blocking in on heavy blitz. Hall at LG should have turned attention to blitz LB but stay on the DT instead... bad move. Ck7 3 step drop quick hook route dropped by AJJ

3rd and 7 at MIN 16C.Kaepernick pass short middle to N.Palmer to MIN 11 for 5 yards (M.Sherels). Caught at MIN 11. 0-yds YAC
All others did well, but looks like Hall did the same thing again and allowed blitz to get through... LMJ with rather lazy, ineffective pick-up block. Good job Ck7 to find open man. Vikes throwing some extra blitzes to try and rattle Ck7.

4th and 2 at MIN 11G.Tavecchio 29 yard field goal is GOOD, Center-B.Jennings, Holder-A.Lee.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1st and 10 at MIN 27(Shotgun) J.Webb pass incomplete short right to L.Hilliard.
Ian W initially doubled.. showed nice burst for big man as play unfolds... excellent penetration by Dobbs and shows speed in QB pursuit. LOLB Haralson stunts in, allowing LE RJF to also get around edge for pressure on other side. Webb's athleticism and throw-away is all that saves him.

2nd and 10 at MIN 27(Shotgun) J.Webb pass incomplete short right to K.Taylor. PENALTY on SF-C.Culliver, Defensive Pass Interference, 11 yards, enforced at MIN 27 - No Play.
no real pressure on this quick throw.. little to aggressive, Culliver

1st and 10 at MIN 38(Shotgun) J.Webb scrambles right end pushed ob at MIN 41 for 3 yards (C.Spillman).
Dobbs owns the LT around the edge for quick pressure... Ian gets extra attention but not a threat... RJF with great awareness to chase Webb out of bounds... Haralson with a near-sack around other edge, but Webb is just so quick to evade.

2nd and 7 at MIN 41(Shotgun) J.Webb pass short left to L.Hilliard to MIN 40 for -1 yards (P.Cox).Caught at MIN 38. 2-yds YAC Timeout #1 by MIN at 01:16.
Dobbs again making LT look awful... C gives extra help on Ian and then RJF... Haralson free around edge thanks to Grant blitz.. does hesitate a little this time, but doubt he would have got to Webb in time.. very nice open field tackle by Cox on Rb after caught

3rd and 8 at MIN 40(Shotgun) J.Webb sacked at MIN 31 for -9 yards (sack split by R.Jean Francois and P.Haralson). Timeout #2 by SF at 01:05.
Dobbs around outside edge again.. nearly gets Webb. Ian W is neutralized well... Grant too on inside blitz.. RJF finally beats LG to close on Webb.. Webb finally spins right into Haralson, who was initially washed beyond QB

4th and 17 at MIN 31C.Kluwe punts 43 yards to SF 26, Center-C.Loeffler, fair catch by K.Williams.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1st and 10 at SF 26(Shotgun) L.James left end to SF 37 for 11 yards (B.Burton, M.Mitchell).
Wiggins pulls and gets his DT enough... Davis 2nd level misses LB.. Kilgore keeps his DT busy... Person keeps RDE away... Looney at LG gets upfield block but doesn't sustain it.. same for Tyms

1st and 10 at SF 37(No Huddle, Shotgun) C.Kaepernick scrambles left end to SF 44 for 7 yards (J.Charleston). Timeout #3 by SF at 00:32.
fake handoff pulls the RDE in enough... Reuland can't stay in front of downfield block.. rather ineffective Tyms block

2nd and 3 at SF 44(Shotgun) C.Kaepernick pass incomplete short right to A.Jenkins.
edges give way quickly , but Ck7 steps into pocket... interior closes up gradually, but Ck7 has enough time.

3rd and 3 at SF 44(Shotgun) R.Cartwright to MIN 48 for 8 yards (T.McKenzie). 1st and 10 at MIN 48(No Huddle) C.Kaepernick spiked the ball to stop the clock.
Wiggins doesn't sustain block on LDE after LMJ gets beyond... free LB with good awareness.. seemed like LD was supposed to go 2nd level for him but blocked in on LDT instead? Person was pulling for that LDT, so leaves me to think that.

2nd and 10 at MIN 48C.Kaepernick pass short middle to R.Cartwright to MIN 40 for 8 yards (M.Sherels, M.Mitchell). Caught at MIN 43. 3-yds YAC
left side with Person and Kilgore were losing quickly, but held on to give Ck7 enough time

End of 1st Half

3rd Quarter

1st and 10 at SF 17S.Tolzien in at QB. S.Tolzien pass incomplete short left to A.Jenkins.
Decent blocks by RG Hall and RT Wiggins.. I didn't like seeing Kilgore get pushed back into Tolzien's lap on a quick 3 step drop and throw.. LG Looney and LT person did fine... awful drop by AJJ

2nd and 10 at SF 17S.Tolzien pass short right to A.Jenkins to SF 22 for 5 yards (M.Sherels). Caught at SF 21. 1-yd YAC
super-quick throw and this time, AJJ makes great catch on ball thrown behind him. Maybe AJJ just ran the route wrong in first place? Who can say?

3rd and 5 at SF 22(Shotgun) S.Tolzien scrambles left end to SF 28 for 6 yards (C.Ponder).
Person did just enough (with help from Tolzien stepping up) to keep the RDE from a sack... Looney did fine helping Kilgore with initial block of RDT.. Hall did well on LDT and Wiggins' LDE slipped to make his job easier.. delayed ILB blitz well picked up by Cartwright. Good scramble by Tolzien when he didn't like his options.

1st and 10 at SF 28R.Cartwright up the middle to SF 35 for 7 yards (T.McKenzie).
Person kept RDE away from run lane... Looney did enough on RDT, but still didn't sustain... Kilgore helped on Looney's DT.. great job by Hall at RG to drive LDT out... Wiggins walled off LDE.. big Dix leads with nice pop on LB.

2nd and 3 at SF 35A.Dixon right guard to SF 37 for 2 yards (J.Charleston).
Kilgore pushes way to 2nd level, but no one there.. Wiggins 2nd level to block LLB.. Looney and Hall engage their guys, but don't get much push.. RDE gets initial penetration inside to RB and Reuland tries but can't keep him from making the stop.. hard to blame him, as he didn't have more than a shoulder/back to get hold of

3rd and 1 at SF 37A.Dixon right tackle to SF 39 for 2 yards (T.McKenzie).
not much push, but very nice pull block from Looney makes this 1st down happen. Reuland helps enough.

1st and 10 at SF 39S.Tolzien pass short middle to G.Celek to 50 for 11 yards (M.Mitchell). FUMBLES (M.Mitchell), and recovers at SF 48. G.Celek to SF 48 for no gain (T.McKenzie). G.Celek credited with 9-yd reception.
Edges hold just enough, and Hall was losing his battle for penetration, but decent time provided. (free Looney was late in giving Hall the help needed)

2nd and 1 at SF 48R.Cartwright to MIN 48 for 4 yards (C.Baker).
Nice job Person on RDE, also good on Looney taking out LB.. good on Kilgore keeping on to RDT.. good block FB dix on penetrating LB..

1st and 10 at MIN 48(Shotgun) R.Cartwright left end to SF 46 for -6 yards (M.Mitchell).
Looney pulls right into Dixon and neither account for the blitzing ROLB who last second attacked from the LOS. Dixon may have been looking to block ROLB, but bumped into the pulling Looney and couldn't go through him to get the LB. Either Kilgore's DT stumbled or was illegally dragged down by Kilgore

2nd and 16 at SF 46R.Cartwright left guard to MIN 48 for 6 yards (L.Dean).
Person walled his RDE away... great inside block by Looney, who had Kilgore's help vs RDT.. Rather weak but still effective lead block from Dixon on LB.

3rd and 10 at MIN 48(Shotgun) S.Tolzien pass incomplete short right to N.Palmer [A.Sendejo].
overload blitz from LB and S... big Dix picks up closer LB, but there was no one available to block incoming S... Fine job by Wiggins. I suspect Kilgore was looking left where he probably should have helped more on the right.. big drop there, Palmer... boo!

4th and 10 at MIN 48A.Lee punts 29 yards to MIN 19, Center-B.Jennings, downed by SF-C.Jones.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1st and 10 at MIN 19J.Webb pass incomplete short right to R.D'Imperio.
slight pressures coming gradually from Bakhtiari and LE Jerrod-Eddie.. who will be called TJE here. Grant on delayed blitz.. poor 3 second short throw Webb

2nd and 10 at MIN 19D.Coleman right tackle to MIN 25 for 6 yards (I.Williams).
stout run D Bakhtiari, but didn't seem to sniff out the right gap. Nice recovery and decent anchor of TJE to help make stop.. Ian W took initial jolt from double, but really did well to hang in and sniff the RB out. Spillman fills in well also

3rd and 4 at MIN 25(Shotgun) J.Webb pass short left to R.Ellison to MIN 30 for 5 yards (L.Grant).
quick strike.. no real pressure, but someone would have had to come free to really get any. Powerful hit from Grant after short catch.

1st and 10 at MIN 30J.Webb pass incomplete short middle to D.Coleman.
again, no pressure worth mentioning... Bakhtiari showing good zone ability.. short pass dropped

2nd and 10 at MIN 30D.Coleman left guard to MIN 32 for 2 yards (L.Grant).
very nice penetration to take out the FB from Gooden... TJE and Ian W very stout run D anchors... Grant fills well also

3rd and 8 at MIN 32(Shotgun) J.Webb pass incomplete short left to R.Ellison.
Dobbs with good edge rush this time (announcers say he was held too... which I guess he slightly was). Bakhtiari had an even better rush this time vs RT, but Webb is just stupid quick when evading sacks. Grant showing he can really blitz and overall just play nasty ball.

4th and 8 at MIN 32C.Kluwe punts 30 yards to SF 38, Center-C.Loeffler, downed by MIN-A.Reisner.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1st and 10 at SF 38S.Tolzien sacked at SF 29 for -9 yards (A.Cole).
Person does good job keeping RDE away... Looney blocks in unnecessarily on Kilgore's DT and therefore allows the extra rush right through his gap assignment. LMJ did an acceptable job delaying one LB rusher with a low block, but the other LB rusher crushed GOD. Thanks a bunch, Looney.

2nd and 29 at SF 19S.Tolzien pass short right to K.Reuland to SF 26 for 7 yards (S.Elimimian). Caught at SF 21. 5-yds YAC
3 step drop and still, Kilgore getting pushed back too quickly by DT.. nothing else notable on this quick pass.. except maybe Reuland showing a little ability to shed tackle

3rd and 22 at SF 26(Shotgun) S.Tolzien pass short middle to K.Reuland to SF 36 for 10 yards (S.Elimimian). Caught at SF 31. 5-yds YAC
all blocks were acceptable here... would like to see Person engage a little further from his QB though.

4th and 12 at SF 36A.Lee punts 64 yards to end zone, Center-B.Jennings, Touchback.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1st and 10 at MIN 20D.Coleman up the middle to MIN 26 for 6 yards (M.Wilhoite).
Masifilo and TJE take outer shoulder of their LT and RG while Ian W gets good initial surge upfield on C.. this leaves the inside with some big lanes to run through. Gooden and Wilhoite take on the extra blocks coming 2nd level. Good job filling by Spillman and Wilhoite.

2nd and 4 at MIN 26D.Coleman right tackle to MIN 30 for 4 yards (I.Williams).
Bakhtiari gets upfield on TE, but TE does contain him... TJE and Ian W lose the LOS, but scrape along to keep damage down..

1st and 10 at MIN 30J.Webb pass short right to R.D'Imperio to MIN 34 for 4 yards (E.Bakhtiari). Caught at MIN 31. 3-yds YAC
slightly late awareness, but still good of Bakhtiari to stop his rush and then turn to run after the FB getting open on a misdirection short pass. Culliver with strong tackle as LDE Butrym hustles over

2nd and 6 at MIN 34J.Webb sacked at MIN 33 for -1 yards (K.Brown).
gradual rush from the middle before Ian W gets free of C and forces QB to evade... again, just stupid-quick evasions from Webb

3rd and 7 at MIN 33(Shotgun) J.Webb pass incomplete short left to D.Aromashodu.
Bakhtiari again showing nice zone coverage... decent overload pressure coming from Kourtnei Brown, Wilhoite, and NCB.

4th and 7 at MIN 33C.Kluwe punts 39 yards to SF 28, Center-C.Loeffler, fair catch by L.James.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1st and 10 at SF 28S.Tolzien pass short left to C.Owusu to SF 37 for 9 yards (R.Jones). PENALTY on MIN-A.Jacobs, Illegal Use of Hands, 5 yards, enforced at SF 37.
blocking held up okay.. Person and Wiggins at OT giving up some ground though... (Beeler in at C)

1st and 10 at SF 42S.Tolzien pass short left to B.Tyms to MIN 46 for 12 yards (R.Jones).
once again, blocking held up okay on this quicker pass play.. 5 step drop

1st and 10 at MIN 46(Shotgun) R.Cartwright up the middle to MIN 45 for 1 yard (J.Charleston).
Celek couldn't keep the RDE from slicing inside for the stop.. good pull by RG Hall... can't believe Beeler didn't get flagged for illegal block (takedown) on the LDT, lol

End of 3rd Quarter

I got the NFL.COM's Pre-Season pass. $20 and you can watch every single game. Well worth it.

4th Quarter

2nd and 9 at MIN 45S.Tolzien pass short right to N.Palmer to MIN 32 for 13 yards (E.Frampton). Caught at MIN 38. 6-yds YAC
blocking was fine... free SLB rush, but no one appeared assigned to pick him up. Perhaps Wiggins at RT should have turned attention there instead of looking to block in, but he focused on the inside stunt of the LDE. Quick pass anyway..

1st and 10 at MIN 32(No Huddle, Shotgun) S.Tolzien pass short right to C.Owusu to MIN 14 for 18 yards (E.Griffen). Caught at MIN 25. 11-yds YAC
More gradual pocket closing in than we would want from a 4 man rush, but overall held up...

1st and 10 at MIN 14(No Huddle) S.Tolzien pass short left to N.Palmer to MIN 11 for 3 yards (M.Sherels). Caught at MIN 11. 0-yds YAC Timeout #1 by SF at 13:35.
another quick pass... good thing too.. LT Person would have given up a sack had Tolzien needed another second

2nd and 7 at MIN 11S.Tolzien pass short left to R.Cartwright to MIN 13 for -2 yards (A.Jacobs).
Person backing up too close to QB.. gotta anchor down further up and away. blocks held up okay enough for a screen play, but Beeler couldn't get outside fast enough to block downfield. Commentators rightly say how Reuland was WIDE OPEN over the middle for a TD. Understandable that Tolzien got it off to RB, considering the LT allowing RDE in his space.

3rd and 9 at MIN 13S.Tolzien pass intended for D.Dobbs INTERCEPTED by S.Elimimian [N.Reed] at MIN 4. S.Elimimian to MIN 17 for 13 yards (R.Cartwright).
Person beaten badly by an inside spin from the RDE... completely to blame there. Person can not handle speed of undersized Nick Reed.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1st and 10 at MIN 174 M.Bethel-Thompson in at QB D.Coleman right guard to MIN 21 for 4 yards (T.Jerod-Eddie).
Masifilo appears at NT.. loses a little ground but hangs in to help on stop. Really down to our scrubs here.

2nd and 6 at MIN 21D.Coleman up the middle to MIN 22 for 1 yard (M.Masifilo). FUMBLES (M.Masifilo), and recovers at MIN 22. D.Coleman to MIN 22 for no gain (P.Butrym).
good job Butrym to fight off block for tackle... Brown also showed some run D anchor there...

3rd and 5 at MIN 22(Shotgun) M.Bethel-Thompson pass short right to K.Taylor to MIN 29 for 7 yards (P.Cox). Caught at MIN 29. 0-yds YAC
pocket gradually gives some, but not much rush overall. Cox with reasonably tight coverage behind WR on the curl

1st and 10 at MIN 29M.Bethel-Thompson pass incomplete deep right to D.Aromashodu (T.Robinson).
no pressure... Bakhtiari's arc is too wide... throw into double coverage... nice aggressive play by Safety Robinson over the top.. like his awareness and break on ball

2nd and 10 at MIN 29M.Bethel-Thompson sacked at MIN 25 for -4 yards (E.Bakhtiari).
Bakhtiari with nice strength to push and disengage TE block before slipping inside shoulder of TE and making sack.

3rd and 14 at MIN 25(Shotgun) M.Bethel-Thompson pass deep middle to K.Taylor to SF 47 for 28 yards (P.Cox). Caught at 50. 3-yds YAC
Bakhtiari just slightly too wide vs RT on arc to QB.. pressuring QB still. Darcel McBath just froze in place instead of dropping back in the zone..

1st and 10 at SF 47M.Bethel-Thompson pass short right to A.Reisner to SF 26 for 21 yards (E.Bakhtiari). Caught at SF 33. 7-yds YAC San Francisco challenged the runner was down by contact ruling, and the play was REVERSED. M.Bethel-Thompson pass short right to A.Reisner to SF 33 for 14 yards (D.McBath). Caught at SF 33. 0-yds YAC
no pressure.. QB just beat the zone coverage

1st and 10 at SF 33(Shotgun) M.Bethel-Thompson pass incomplete short left to M.Asiata (P.Butrym).
Butrym gets decent push on his LG and sticks paw up to get a piece of the pass... Brown gets slowed up well by the LT

2nd and 10 at SF 33M.Bethel-Thompson sacked at SF 42 for -9 yards (E.Bakhtiari).
Bakhtiari makes it look easy getting around the RT (Levi Horn) for this sack.. hand usage and burst... nice!

3rd and 19 at SF 42(Shotgun) M.Bethel-Thompson pass incomplete deep right to J.Wright. Timeout #1 by MIN at 08:14.
Outside blitzes picked up well by Vikes... ball dropped but wasn't a 1st down and Cox had tight coverage behind receiver

4th and 19 at SF 42C.Kluwe punts 40 yards to SF 2, Center-C.Loeffler, downed by MIN-B.Felder.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1st and 10 at SF 21 J.Johnson in at QB for SF. J.Johnson pass incomplete short right to B.Hannula.
super quick slant pass.. inaccurate or just off with WR

2nd and 10 at SF 2A.Dixon up the middle to SF 4 for 2 yards (A.Sendejo).
Entire play-side left poorly blocked (Netter at LT.. Person at LG.. Slowey at C.. Looney at RG.. Wiggins at RT)... no push... especially Dobbs letting the RDE get inside... play going nowhere. FB Bell looked quick and able as lead block there.

3rd and 8 at SF 4A.Dixon right tackle to SF 13 for 9 yards (E.Frampton).
good run blocks all around... particularly Dobbs, Looney, Bell, and Slowey... Owusu didn't maintain DB block downfield

1st and 10 at SF 13A.Dixon up the middle to SF 16 for 3 yards (A.Sendejo).
Slowey went to engage LDT, but lost footing and fell to his knees... essentially allowing easy tackle... all else looked okay

2nd and 7 at SF 16J.Johnson pass deep left to B.Hannula pushed ob at SF 38 for 22 yards (C.Gatewood). Caught at SF 34. 4-yds YAC
great roll-out misdirection... fooled all in front 7 long enough... good speed and accurate sideline throw by JJ

1st and 10 at SF 38A.Dixon up the middle to SF 40 for 2 yards (T.Nielsen).
Dobbs missed his run block on LB... Reuland recovered to push LDE away from run lane, but this also interfered with the key pull block from Person, which then put too much traffic in front of Dixon plus too away that crucial block of the tackling WLB. Wiggins does his job, and Bell harmlessly misses his block.

2nd and 8 at SF 40A.Dixon left end to SF 42 for 2 yards (E.Frampton).
Reuland great efforts in sealing the RDE far weak side (may have been too grabby)... Nice job pulling Netter driving his LB away.. Person just too slow to get out in space from the LG spot... Owusu with tenacious blocking on WLB... fair block Hannula outside.

3rd and 6 at SF 42J.Johnson pass short right to C.Owusu to 50 for 8 yards (A.Cole). Caught at SF 42. 8-yds YAC
looks by design, but Wiggins gets a chip block on LDE but immediately moves on to another less troubling defender to block... which allows unwanted pressure on JJ. Perhaps he thought Bell would take that defender, and he is likely right to think that... but it didn't really happen.

1st and 10 at 50A.Dixon left tackle to MIN 49 for 1 yard (A.Cole).
quick inside penetration allowed by Reuland disrupts the RG Looney pull block... no blocking weakside was effective. The DT scraping down line to make tackle was Slowey's.. who missed him and is struggling to stay on his feet

2nd and 9 at MIN 49J.Johnson pass incomplete short right to A.Dixon.
all went okay here until Dix drops a catchable short pass.. not the most accurate of easy throws or having soft touch either..

3rd and 9 at MIN 49J.Johnson sacked at SF 48 for -3 yards (A.Jacobs). Timeout #2 by MIN at 02:56.
Heavy blitz focused on LG Chisolm's area... Netter at LT did his job on the RDE... Chisolm awaited the blitz from the slot DB as he should.. Slowey was likely going to take the blitz LB out, as he should.. J.J. had a moment to release and a wide open target he appeared to be looking at.. but just decided to eat it. Biggest problem was Dixon on this 3 step drop play... just a whole lotta fail from Dixon. He should have been quicker to get in front of JJ's oncoming blitz, but hesitation put him in JJ's way instead.

4th and 12 at SF 48A.Lee punts 52 yards to end zone, Center-K.Nelson, Touchback.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1st and 10 at MIN 20(Shotgun) M.Bethel-Thompson pass short right intended for J.Wright INTERCEPTED by P.Cox at MIN 28. P.Cox to MIN 27 for 1 yard (J.Wright).
camera was late for the snap... good pressure coming from edge by slot CB blitz strong-side(could never see number.. guessing Purvis?).. great break and dive for INT by Cox on a poorly placed sideline pass..
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1st and 10 at MIN 27A.Dixon left end pushed ob at MIN 20 for 7 yards (T.Nielsen).
Slowey at C misses DT and falls down... Chisolm at LG engages LB but doesn't maintain block... same for LT Netter on the RDE... FB Bell runs through supposed hole but no one to block since Dixon ran wide left instead... looks like Hannalu missed DB block...

2nd and 3 at MIN 20J.Johnson left end pushed ob at MIN 16 for 4 yards (A.Sendejo).
designed rollout play-fake for J.J. shows the speed to beat the RDE around the edge

1st and 10 at MIN 16A.Dixon left end pushed ob at MIN 13 for 3 yards (A.Sendejo).
Slowey couldn't get 2nd level quick enough to block LB... FB Bell couldn't block the tackling LB effectively here

2nd and 7 at MIN 13A.Dixon right tackle to MIN 1 for 12 yards (T.Nielsen).
Bell made key block on outside DB while Reuland, Wiggins, and Looney sealed the front 7 to open the nice hole

1st and 1 at MIN 1J.Johnson kneels to MIN 3 for -2 yards.
2nd and 3 at MIN 3J.Johnson kneels to MIN 4 for -1 yards.
3rd and 4 at MIN 4J.Johnson kneels to MIN 6 for -2 yards.

End of Game

49ers @ Houston - Preseason Game 2 play-by-play

1st Quarter

1st and 10 at HOU 33M.Schaub pass short middle to O.Daniels to HST 38 for 5 yards (D.Goldson).
Sopo gets nice push on C before RG helps keep him back... quick 3 step throw anyway.. Bowman quickly sees the TE route and jumps in front for the INT try... SO close to picking that one off... good closing tackle by Goldson

2nd and 5 at HOU 38(Shotgun) M.Schaub pass short middle to A.Johnson to HST 44 for 6 yards (P.Willis).
4 man rush. Whitner creeps to the los and blitzes but sees his rush halted well by the LT... Justin gets some push, but overall, gets kept away by LG.. Sopo can't get much on the C and RG is there to assist.. Ray not getting enough on RT.. pretty quick throw. (really doesn't seem like we are going all out for this) amazing closing tackle from Willis, of course.

1st and 10 at HOU 44M.Schaub pass deep middle to K.Martin to SF 34 for 22 yards (C.Culliver).
another 4 man rush.. Dobbs at RDE as Justin moves in to NT.. Dobbs was doubled and ineffective.. Justin gets doubled as well, and then does Ray. (Texans using 7 in their zone blocking well here with rotating help) Haralson easily washed out by RT. Corners playing tight but no press

1st and 10 at SF 34A.Foster right tackle to SF 34 for no gain (P.Haralson; R.McDonald).
nice job here by Ray on RT and Parys on TE for stout run D

2nd and 10 at SF 34A.Foster left tackle to SF 33 for 1 yard (I.Sopoaga).
C zone block left on Justin.. RG left tries to cut down Sopo but not effective enough, as Sopo slices and dives in

3rd and 9 at SF 33(Shotgun) M.Schaub pass short right to A.Foster to SF 30 for 3 yards (D.Whitner). Timeout #1 by HST at 10:50. 4th and 6 at SF 30S.Graham 48 yard field goal is GOOD, Center-J.Weeks, Holder-D.Jones.
Justin slips quickly past C and Bowman spins to get in as well, but nice screen setting up far right. fantastic job Whitner of slicing in and avoiding block of RT to make open field tackle
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1st and 10 at SF 24A.Smith pass short right to M.Crabtree to SF 28 for 4 yards (J.Joseph) [C.Barwin].
Alex got body slammed by Barwin (easily should have been a personal foul), AD stands his ground, but punches out.. basically giving Barwin an even better angle to run beyond him and right into Alex. Now here is the only thing, and it's important. It looks clear to me that the play was designed for Alex to take the snap and slide to his right... not a full rollout, but somewhat partial. Now if this is true? Then AD really screwed up here. If this was Alex not dropping back in a straight line? No worries for the other blocks.

2nd and 6 at SF 28F.Gore left tackle to SF 42 for 14 yards (G.Quin).
Good 2nd level block Iupati and Goodwin... also good job Staley blocking in on RDT.. not good blocking from Dobbs as 2nd TE, but he did enough since Gore handled the rest in evading tackle by RDE...

1st and 10 at SF 42A.Smith sacked at SF 42 for 0 yards (sack split by T.Jamison and C.Barwin).
Overall, the OL did their jobs here. Alex just didn't like any of his options. I see two short options he had a moment of fairly safe shots to take (both backs), but he isn't wanting to. The deeper routes, as pointed out by Tim Ryan, were well covered when Alex wanted to throw. Looks also like Crabtree broke free on an inside slant. I would have liked to see Alex stop running and hit him at the 50.. gotta keep your eyes downfield more, Alex.

2nd and 10 at SF 42A.Smith pass short left to R.Moss to SF 47 for 5 yards (K.Jackson).
Good quick throw here from Alex. The left side.. Iupati and even more so of Goodwin.. was getting shoved back towards Alex quickly

3rd and 5 at SF 47(Shotgun) A.Smith pass deep right to T.Ginn pushed ob at HST 29 for 24 yards (B.McCain) [A.Smith].
Alex showing the athleticism, toughness, and accuracy while throwing on the move. Hunter was blocking passionately here on OLB.. The LDT broke quickly left to chase after the rolling Alex and Boone couldn't get past AD to stay in front.. Alex hit by LDT after throw.. a hit Alex had to know was coming.

1st and 10 at HOU 29(Shotgun) A.Smith pass short middle to K.Hunter to HST 26 for 3 yards (B.Cushing).
Quick dumpoff.. Ryan says screen, but didn't see any OL blocks being set up. Alex hits Hunter just after Hunter blocks and releases from OLB. AD is too late in turning to get a LB block.. so LB makes tackle. Boone let DT disengage and nearly make the tackle. Not seeing this "new and improved footwork" for AD... he looks as plodding as ever.

2nd and 7 at HOU 26A.Smith pass incomplete short middle to V.Davis.
OkAy, so this is a heavily talked about pass play... the "wide open" Moss play. If you have the preseason package for nfl.com, pause this play at exactly 19:14. (or 6:34 on your NFLN replay) There, you will see that as the ball is dropped by VD, the CB is tightly on Moss' back on the slant. The LB #53 however, is a few steps behind VD on the drag route and there is room to run towards sideline for another 10+ yards.. depending on when Moss' CB would see to break off his coverage and chase VD down... and then there's the question of whether the CB could bring VD to the ground. Moss being fairly well covered on a lower % pass? Or VD having steps on an ILB for a sure 1st down and potential TD? I don't think this is a play worthy of the criticisms I have read. Really think Alex made the wiser choice here, and not many QBs under pressure would look for a second read after seeing his favorite target open vs a slower LB.

3rd and 7 at HOU 26(Shotgun) A.Smith sacked at HST 32 for -6 yards (sack split by T.Jamison and A.Smith).
Staley and AD did a fair job of keeping the edge rushers away... Hunter was losing containment of his guy right up the middle on Alex, which caused Alex to go into flee-mode. Boone was doing his zone block... but in hindsight, was more ideal to take on the blitz LB instead of helping Goodwin. Hunter really blew his block quickly on Cushing... BUT... Smith really should have gotten the ball to the bottom WR (Mario on a curl route) or even better.. Crabtree over the middle on a slant. Alex actually had room to run where he was headed, but Boone didn't know what was happening behind him and didn't sustain the block that would have given Alex the lane he wanted to run through. I do see what Alex was admitting to the other day though. I think the Texans D had him playing a bit scared with the happy feet. Maybe it is the lack of the preseason impact? and not wanting to stand in and take more nasty hits for a meaningless game? That would be my guess.

4th and 13 at HOU 32D.Akers 50 yard field goal is GOOD, Center-B.Jennings, Holder-A.Lee
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1st and 10 at HOU 24A.Foster up the middle to HST 27 for 3 yards (P.Willis).
Justin turns corner (since LT blocked in) and takes on lead pull block from RG. Sopo anchors very well on C to clog lanes. Ray not bad all in stout cloggage either. Willis brilliantly evades LG 2nd level block attempt to spring into the hole to get RB

2nd and 7 at HOU 27A.Foster up the middle to HST 31 for 4 yards (P.Willis).
Dobbs fights off LT and the RB wants no part of that side... Justin takes initial double then Bowman clears off of 2nd level OL... Ray does get washed out of run lane, but hey, took 2 blockers out of the picture.. this allows our ILBs to pounce... namely, the closer Willis.

3rd and 8 at HOU 26(Shotgun) M.Schaub pass short middle to A.Foster to HST 33 for 7 yards (C.Culliver).
Dobbs stunts in but lots of OL inside to stop him... Justin stunts out and slowly closes on QB through the LT... Ray gets swallowed up inside and is ineffective, but it helps single up Haralson who get a little pressure around the edge.. Terrible run stop angle by Culliver nearly allows the 1st down, but the closing of Whitner + Bowman + Culliver on his back makes the RB go down just shy

4th and 1 at HOU 33D.Jones punts 47 yards to SF 20, Center-J.Weeks. L.James to SF 22 for 2 yards (A.Ball). (Punt hang time 3.6 seconds.)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1st and 10 at SF 22B.Jacobs up the middle to SF 30 for 8 yards (K.Jackson). SF-B.Jacobs was injured during the play.
Excellent blocks from Staley to seal edge and FB Dixon to seal other side... good on VD block of WLB. Iupati and Goodwin surge through 2nd level. Big Jacobs looked quick as I'd ever seen him.. sucks to see him hobbled now.. get well soon.

2nd and 2 at SF 30F.Gore left tackle to SF 28 for -2 yards (T.Jamison, B.James).
inside LB blitz disrupted the blocking here. After initial block on RDT, Iupati was late in turning to block LB.. Goodwin altered his block from LDT to blitz ILB, and that allowed LDT to hit Miller's lead block in backfield.. Boone pulled well to get to the WLB. Davis helped Goodwin on ILB block, but with traffic in between, couldn't sustain that block as the LB stunted in.

3rd and 4 at SF 28(Shotgun) K.Hunter up the middle to SF 45 for 17 yards (D.Manning; B.McCain).
nice draw play up the gut to take advantage of outside edge rush.. pull block from Boone not pretty, but it was just effective enough to keep RDE away from Hunter.. Staley and Iupati team up to drive RDT off and away... very key pull block from VD on LB... Kyle W trying his arse off to get up into the SS block, but the SS did a nice job evading to help on tackle.. good job Ginn downfield on CB

1st and 10 at SF 45A.Smith pass incomplete deep left to M.Manningham. Timeout #1 by SF at 00:46.
Pass pocket closing in (particularly Iupati not playing low enough and getting lifted up) but holding off the rush enough for this 3 step drop. Terrible missed call... Mario was clearly disrupted from his route a good 10 yds down the field. Alex raises arms to the refs like WTF, yo? Some home-cookin' there.. Harbaugh furious and giving the refs hell, lolz.

2nd and 10 at SF 45A.Smith pass incomplete short left to M.Crabtree.
very quick out route... high pass, no question, but off the hands of Crabtree. Lots of zip and height... not an easy catch, but both QB and WR get some blame there.

3rd and 10 at SF 45(Shotgun) A.Smith pass incomplete short middle to K.Hunter. PENALTY on HST-A.Smith, Roughing the Passer, 15 yards, enforced at SF 45 - No Play.
Decent job by AD and Staley on the edge rushers... Looks like Alex is soon to be sacked by Staley's man, but Alex would have stepped up more in the pocket had Iupati not been quickly beaten inside by the RDT.. who was closing up the middle on Alex. Throw was low to Hunter over the middle... definitely catchable... but Hunter looked downfield and turned to spring out of his crouch before securing the ball. Alex was seriously rushed there and must have had visions of Rocky Bernard dancing in his mind.... thanks, Iupati. One thing for sure, Boone is a huge upgrade on Snyder just based on natural anchor strength alone.

1st and 10 at HOU 40K.Hunter left guard to HST 37 for 3 yards (C.Barwin, R.Harris).
Boone pulls left and takes on LB, but doesn't put him down. Staley and Iupati worked on moving the RE well.. Goodwin struggled to move his DT, but overall, did enough. Reuland couldn't handle the OLB.. who quickly came around edge to get Hunter from side/behind. AD did fine away from play.

End of 1st Quarter

2nd Quarter - Texans game 2 preseason

2nd and 7 at HOU 37K.Hunter right guard to HST 34 for 3 yards (B.Cushing, J.Crick).
Boone and Goodwin double up on the DT and do enough to keep him from run lane... AD kept the RT busy at first, but didn't sustain block. Reuland couldn't ultimately keep the SLB off of Hunter. Goodwin didn't peel off of that DT in time to pick up the WLB coming in from the backside of the run. VD did a fair job of delaying the S and ILB.

3rd and 4 at HOU 34(Shotgun) K.Hunter right guard to HST 31 for 3 yards (B.Reed, T.Jamison).
Iupati pulls inside.. didn't really block anyone. Goodwin struggled and didn't really turn or move the DT out of run lane.. AD pushed his way 2nd level for decent 2nd level block. Boone.. eh, didn't get much movement from the other DT and pile. Big problem was the SOLB flying around the edge to get Hunter from the back. VD did his thing on the DB up in the box

4th and 1 at HOU 31A.Dixon right guard to HST 29 for 2 yards (B.Cushing).
not much push here on this obvious short yardage run.. AD, Boone, and Goodwin get just enough surge to make this conversion happen

1st and 10 at HOU 29K.Hunter left guard to HST 23 for 6 yards (J.Joseph, B.James).
real nice job of Staley to drive RDE off... Reuland does well keeping the WOLB away, as Miller lead blocks the converging LB. Nice job Iupati twisting himself in front of the NT to neutralize him.

2nd and 4 at HOU 23K.Hunter up the middle to HST 23 for no gain (B.James). PENALTY on SF-A.Davis, Offensive Holding, 10 yards, enforced at HST 23 - No Play.
Boone went 2nd level but didn't stay in front to block ILB... The LDE turned in quickly, and refs didn't like AD shoving him in the back. Pretty good lead block on LB from Miller... VD turned the SOLB away from play

2nd and 14 at HOU 33A.Smith pass incomplete short right to K.Hunter. Timeout #2 by SF at 11:58.
designed rollout screen for Hunter, but Hunter gets hung up at the los by the SOLB... Alex has to run out of bounds OR there would have been an illegal man downfield had he thrown the ball (Boone was way downfield as he didn't know the screen failed)

3rd and 14 at HOU 33(Shotgun) A.Smith pass short left to R.Moss to HST 20 for 13 yards (K.Jackson).
OL blocks were solid on the 4 man rush... good throw to Moss . Think Moss would have had the first had this been a regular season game.. or had kept better balance as he turned.

4th and 1 at HOU 20A.Dixon right guard to HST 20 for no gain (G.Quin; T.Dobbins).
Boone and Goodwin flatten the DT. One ILB tries to hurdle Boone's carcass but flops over him...Two problems on this play... 1)VD was soft and weak on block of SOLB with hand in dirt, and that LB slipped inside to contribute to the quick stop. Also, 2)with Boone and Goodwin on the ground, the other ILB easily gets in to the RB. AD went 2nd level for a DB block, but in this short yardage, there was yet another DB that slices in unblocked to also lay a hit on RB. So that's 3 defenders getting Dixon stopped short.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1st and 10 at HOU 21M.Schaub pass deep middle to A.Johnson to SF 36 for 43 yards (T.Brock).
Tukuafu at LDE now gets 100% totally sucked into the PA fake, lolz... heck everyone really did, though at least Sopo was beginning to redirect towards QB. Brock showed great awareness and range to get into good position on this bomb, and Robinson wasn't far in trailing WR Johnson either. Brock slowed down his momentum enough to plant his feet and make a play for the ball, but he simply.. didn't. So they both look like double covering goofs there.

1st and 10 at SF 36M.Schaub pass incomplete short middle to O.Daniels.
no significant pressure on this 3 man DL rush... QB beat the zone, but TE dropped the ball in front of Culliver and Robinson

2nd and 10 at SF 36A.Foster right tackle to SF 33 for 3 yards (P.Haralson).
nice job Sopo to take on C, hold is ground as he scraped down to run lane... Tuku anchored well also to clog the hole.. best play was Haralson quickly defeating TE block to close on the RB. Spillman quick to fly in there, kid plays with attitude!

3rd and 7 at SF 33(Shotgun) M.Schaub pass incomplete short middle to K.Martin [R.Jean Francois].
Haralson around edge neutralized by RT.. Tuku pushes pocket a few yds till double teamed... Dobbs now at RDE is doing well in shoving LT back towards QB.. RJF gets nice outside move on LG to pressure and hit QB

4th and 7 at SF 33R.Bullock 51 yard field goal is No Good, Wide Right, Center-J.Weeks, Holder-D.Jones.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1st and 10 at SF 41(Shotgun) C.Kaepernick pass short left to R.Moss pushed ob at SF 47 for 6 yards (K.Jackson).
blocks were solid on this 5 man rush.. Reuland picked up edge rusher well.. strong quick pass to Moss

2nd and 4 at SF 47(Shotgun) C.Kaepernick left end pushed ob at HST 41 for 12 yards (G.Quin).
very deceptive fake to RB.. good wide open run Ck7... ROLB bit hard on LMJ fake. with a pull block from Staley and solid one from Iupati, LMJ would have made good yards as well, had he been given the ball

1st and 10 at HOU 41(Shotgun) L.James up the middle to HST 33 for 8 yards (J.Crick).
basically the same play and blocks from the left side... this time did go to LMJ up the gut with that lead pull block from Staley on ILB

2nd and 2 at HOU 33(Shotgun) C.Kaepernick pass incomplete deep left to K.Williams. PENALTY on HST-G.Quin, Illegal Contact, 5 yards, enforced at HST 33 - No Play.
blocks were good except Reuland would have allowed the edge rusher a sack in another second or two. pass appeared overthrown, but KW was held up. *look, that was a poor call, really. The contact was very ticky-tack.. didn't really slow KW down, and that ball was gonna be overthrown and lacked touch regardless.. but I'll take it!

1st and 10 at HOU 28C.Kaepernick pass incomplete short right to T.Ginn (Q.Demps).
3 step quick throw to the sideline... very nearly a pick 6 INT by the DB... bounced off the defender's hand. Should never throw that, but if you do? You have to throw it more to the out of bounds pylon. blocks looked set up and solid

2nd and 10 at HOU 28C.Kaepernick pass incomplete deep left to R.Moss (A.Ball). Timeout #3 by SF at 08:06.
quick throw, but another fine blocking job to fend off the 5 man rush... sideline pass was high but catchable... especially for a vet with the measurables of Moss

3rd and 10 at HOU 28(Shotgun) C.Kaepernick pass short right to T.Ginn to HST 22 for 6 yards (S.McManis). PENALTY on SF-A.Davis, Illegal Formation, 5 yards, enforced at HST 28 - No Play.
Iupati was quickly letting the RDT in on QB as he was beat on the outside.. quick strong throw to sideline on target though

3rd and 15 at HOU 33(Shotgun) K.Hunter up the middle to HST 19 for 14 yards (J.Crick).
effective pull blocks for Reuland and Iupati... good job Boone getting DL push before hitting LB 2nd level.. Goodwin did well enough on DT and AD showed good drive power on the DT Boone started on. Kyle W has to learn to block through the whistle, though that didn't effect this play. Harbaugh and I hated the ball spot at the time, but looking closely, it was fair.

4th and 1 at HOU 19D.Akers 36 yard field goal is GOOD, Center-B.Jennings, Holder-A.Lee.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1st and 10 at HOU 20A.Foster left tackle to HST 25 for 5 yards (C.Spillman).
Tuku headed that way but got washed out... Sopo got inside and behind the C, and fell down in the approx. run lane... RJF very stout on LT.. Bakhtiari was stout on TE to protect any outside run chance... Gooden got swallowed up in the traffic quickly, and Grant had a lane but hesitated too long. Good fill by Spillman

2nd and 5 at HOU 25A.Foster up the middle to HST 29 for 4 yards (R.Jean Francois).
Sopo stout on C but tries to lunge through C to make tackle and doesn't... Tuku pretty stout vs RT and fights off block to help on tackle... RJF gets the outside shoulder of LT, but is quick to cut back in to chase down + tackle RB.. Gooden attacked the los and battled the LG as RB changed course behind RT.. Grant evaded TE block and was bouncing back and forth trying to see which lane RB would hit, but then was taken out from the side/back by same TE... Robinson flew in to fill the lane.

3rd and 1 at HOU 29M.Schaub pass short right to J.Casey to HST 32 for 3 yards (E.Bakhtiari).
good upfield pressure from free Haralson to make this pass less accurate.. but Grant takes terrible angle to tackle the "FB" getting up after tough catch... Tuku flies in and horribly misses tackle.. another horrible angle and missed tackle opportunity for Gooden...

1st and 10 at HOU 32M.Schaub pass short right to A.Foster pushed ob at HST 38 for 6 yards (C.Culliver).
camera was a little late to the snap... only pressure was from Tuku pushing his man back towards QB, but even that wasn't much. poor zone coverage from Gooden allows this easy completion

2nd and 4 at HOU 38(Shotgun) A.Foster left end to HST 37 for -1 yards (T.Brock).
real nice job by RDE Dobbs to contain weakside on TE block and force RB towards sideline where Brock comes flying in for a great leg-tackle

3rd and 5 at HOU 37(Shotgun) M.Schaub pass short middle to L.Jean to HST 47 for 10 yards (C.Spillman).
gradual push but not enough pressure... Gooden blitz was stuffed well by the RB... looks like Grant got preoccupied by a well covered target and allowed a wide open one close by to catch the ball. Why the hell were the corners SO far back on this 4 man rush?

1st and 10 at HOU 47B.Tate left tackle to 50 for 3 yards (L.Grant).
Tuku did a decent job scraping along with his blocker and then sticking himself in the run lane.. same for Ian W on the C... stout job of keeping the run play inside by RJF and Bakhtiari.. nice job by Grant to keep himself free to tackle

2nd and 7 at 50M.Schaub pass short left to L.Jean to SF 36 for 14 yards (T.Brock).
Haralson with nice outside rush around TE, but QB steps in the pocket... Tuku neutralized by a double and same for Ian W by C... impressive push from RJF vs LG and he takes a swat but doesn't bat pass down.. Bakhtiari well blocked by LT (maybe a little too well, some grabbing going on there).. Brock with actually decent inside/behind coverage but the throw was high and away (perfect).. and well caught by WR.

1st and 10 at SF 36A.Foster right end pushed ob at SF 12 for 24 yards (C.Spillman).
Tuku doubled for a moment and still scraping to get to run lane, but is just late of it... Rough first play by SOLB Rowe, as he gets cleared out badly by a TE... Gooden takes terrible inside angle to remove himself from play... Grant a bit late reacting and delayed by a failed cut-block... Robinson closed quickly from deep, but well blocked by FB/TE... Culliver disengages WR block for a hit on RB's knee, but the RB runs right on through

1st and 10 at SF 12M.Schaub pass incomplete short middle to K.Walter.
extra protection... no pressure quick throw.. overthrown out of endzone... pretty tight trailing coverage by Culliver on WR

2nd and 10 at SF 12A.Foster up the middle to SF 9 for 3 yards (G.Celek). Timeout #2 by HST at 01:02.
stout D from middle-right... particularly Tuku and Brown at SOLB.. nice job Brown to locate RB as Tuku + LBs converge

3rd and 7 at SF 9(Shotgun) M.Schaub pass short middle to L.Jean for 9 yards, TOUCHDOWN.
RJF doubled and gets a little push before failed swat attempt... Tuku slowly driving RT back, as is Brown on LT, but it's not enough. no one picks up drag route underneath... Looks to me like Gooden was supposed to trail that route and just got confused. Really annoying watching Schaub and the first team OL acting like they just won the SB against all of our backup scrubs.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1st and 10 at SF 21(Shotgun) C.Kaepernick pass short left to K.Williams to SF 27 for 6 yards (A.Ball).
OL held up fine on this quick throw

2nd and 4 at SF 27(Shotgun) C.Kaepernick pass short left to K.Reuland to SF 35 for 8 yards (T.Nolan). PENALTY on SF-K.Reuland, Offensive Pass Interference, 10 yards, enforced at SF 27 - No Play.
edges gave way quickly, but held up enough.. Ck7 was composed and quick on his primary read. fairly weak P.I. call on Reuland

2nd and 14 at SF 17(Shotgun) L.James right guard to SF 23 for 6 yards (T.Dobbins, T.Nolan). PENALTY on HST-T.Dobbins, Face Mask (15 Yards), 15 yards, enforced at SF 23.
effective blocks from Kilgore, Leonard D, and Wiggins... Reuland was tenacious on DB and effective.. decent pull block Looney, but he didn't sustain the block

End of 1st Half

How do you feel about this Bakhtiari kid? Will he see PT in the regular season or even make the final 53?

Hmmm... as of right now, I would definitely add him to my 53 as the 4th rush LB. He is pretty stout and aware vs the run game, and he can beat an OT inside and out.... BUT... due to a mix of playcalls, circumstances, and his own struggles, he didn't exactly own the starting OT like he did all of the backups. Limited snaps to really go on... but I like him so far as a keeper.

3rd Quarter - Texans preseason game 2 notes:

1st and 10 at SF 25C.Kaepernick pass short right to K.Williams to SF 32 for 7 yards (B.McCain).
far too quick a throw for Leonard D (LD) to allow the LDE inside after failed lunge to block... Scary decision by Ck7 to throw that hitch route... not as close to a SS INT as in the 2nd quarter, but ill-advised.. all else was fine

2nd and 3 at SF 32R.Cartwright up the middle to SF 33 for 1 yard (R.Harris, W.Mercilus).
Person on RDE, but slides off him... Reuland blocked in on 2nd level LB well enough.. good job Looney at LG to initially block Kilgore's NT as he slid in for 2nd level LB block... the Nt turned in and away from Looney and Kilgore couldn't stop him.. so RB tackled. LD did fine on the LDE, but Wiggins allowed SOLB to disengage and turn back to assist on tackle from behind.

3rd and 2 at SF 33C.Kaepernick pass short right to A.Dixon pushed ob at SF 33 for no gain (T.Dobbins).
PA didn't fool the ILB, who quickly pursued FB Dixon headed to the flats sideline.. easy tackle. Ck7 had plenty of time to look for a 2nd target and should have... anyone could see the Dixon option wasn't going anywhere

4th and 2 at SF 33(Punt hang time 4.8 seconds.) A.Lee punts 61 yards to HST 6, Center-B.Jennings. T.Holliday to HST 11 for 5 yards (T.Brock).
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1st and 10 at HOU 11B.Tate left guard to HST 17 for 6 yards (E.Bakhtiari).
Bakhtiari flies around edge and finds RB trying to run up LG gap... C engages Ian W and RG tries cutting low.. this gets the NT off the los a few yds...RJF is stout against the double and funnels RB back in.. Brown wins battle vs TE to also funnel RB back in... Spillman fills quickly vs TE to clog run lane

2nd and 4 at HOU 17B.Tate right end to HST 21 for 4 yards (E.Bakhtiari, R.Jean Francois). PENALTY on HST, Offensive Holding, 10 yards, enforced at HST 21.
strong job Bakhtiari to hold POA on TE and slice in on RB... DL scraped along.. lost a couple yds, but overall clogged well. good call on the OL hold of Tuku there.

2nd and 10 at HOU 11T.Yates pass short left to B.Tate to HST 13 for 2 yards (T.Gooden) [E.Bakhtiari].
Ian W gets doubled, but shows awareness in tracking RB and causing disruption to delay RB... excellent job of Gooden to weave his way through unset blockers on this screen play to get enough of RB to trip him up. Nice efforts by Tuku and Robinson to converge. Bakhtiari flew around the edge beating RT to put hard hit on QB just after thrown

3rd and 8 at HOU 13(Shotgun) T.Yates pass short left to L.Jean to HST 22 for 9 yards (T.Robinson).
blitz was easily picked up... pretty soft coverage of Robinson behind the open WR on curl route.. Robinson respecting that speed a lil too much, but closed quickly enough.

1st and 10 at HOU 22T.Yates pass incomplete short left to J.Casey.
good job by RJF to beat the LG inside for the only good pressure... TE was open with Gooden trailing by a yard, but pass was high and pretty uncatchable. pretty sure Bakhtiari on edge rush was held by the TE opposite side

2nd and 10 at HOU 22B.Tate right guard to HST 20 for -2 yards (E.Bakhtiari, I.Williams).
Spillman flies around edge to at least disrupt, but doesn't hang onto tackle... Bakhtiari stands up FB in backfield for stout cloggage... good job Ian W to fight off a cut block and burst in to help tackle

3rd and 12 at HOU 20(Shotgun) T.Yates pass incomplete. Penalty on HST-B.Brooks, Offensive Holding, declined.
Bakhtiari stunts inside and gets great upfield push until he is held... Tuku stunted out and eventually gets good pursuit of sideline scrambling QB

4th and 12 at HOU 20(Punt hang time 4.46 seconds.) D.Jones punts 47 yards to SF 33, Center-J.Weeks. L.James MUFFS catch, touched at SF 33, ball out of bounds at SF 28.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1st and 10 at SF 28R.Cartwright up the middle to SF 31 for 3 yards (B.Braman).
blocking was fine for Kilgore, LD, Wiggins, and good pull block Looney to get key LB... but Reuland couldn't keep his block on SOLB. stacked box allowed the S to fly up in there as well.

2nd and 7 at SF 31(Shotgun) C.Kaepernick pass incomplete short middle to R.Cartwright.
protection was overall good, but LD lost footing and fell down around the 3 second mark.. pass should have been caught here for the 3 yd gain

3rd and 7 at SF 31(Shotgun) C.Kaepernick pass incomplete short left to B.Swain.
good protection gradually giving way to close pocket... poor throw to well-blanketed WR... at least thrown to where only WR had a shot, but he really didn't

4th and 7 at SF 31A.Lee punts 56 yards to HST 13, Center-B.Jennings. T.Holliday to HST 28 for 15 yards (M.Wilhoite, T.Gooden). (Punt hang time 4.22 seconds.)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1st and 10 at HOU 28T.Yates pass short left to K.Martin to HST 31 for 3 yards (M.Wilhoite).
camera was late for the snap. looks like gradual pocket push before the short throw... pretty tight coverage of Wilhoite on the back of the.. back.

2nd and 7 at HOU 31T.Yates pass incomplete deep left to K.Martin. PENALTY on SF-T.Brock, Defensive Pass Interference, 32 yards, enforced at HST 31 - No Play.
nothing impressive regarding pressure... coverage is good from Brock here, but for some useless reason, he keeps his hands touching up around the front neck area (above numbers) too long downfield. Just odd to do that.

1st and 10 at SF 37B.Tate up the middle to SF 31 for 6 yards (G.Celek).
nice cut-back design would have worked, but Brown stayed patient and free to make tackle. (espn screwed up the #48 for Celek above, lolz) Got some real scrubs at the DE spots in Tony Jerrod-Eddie and Masifilo now

2nd and 4 at SF 31B.Tate right end to SF 27 for 4 yards (E.Bakhtiari).
DL loses ground a few yds gradually.. nice job by Bakhtiari to disengage outside block to dive in for tackle...

1st and 10 at SF 27T.Yates pass incomplete short left to L.Jean.
Brown at ROLB gets sucked in a bit too long on PA opposite side... same goes for Wilhoite.. nice job Ian W to recover the quickest to get some pressure and hands up on QB... WR can't handle the bullet pass as Brock closes quickly after

2nd and 10 at SF 27(Shotgun) B.Tate up the middle to SF 22 for 5 yards (M.Thomas).
Masifilo takes on interior OL and is stout to clog, but pays the price as he's eventually dumped on his back... Spillman, Thomas, and ILBs clog up the run lane

3rd and 5 at SF 22(Shotgun) T.Yates sacked at SF 31 for -9 yards (M.Thomas).
Bakhtiari takes on RT... Butrym at LDE stunts in as Wilhoite attacks RG... this opens clever avenue to QB for the blitzing slot DB

4th and 14 at SF 31S.Graham 49 yard field goal is GOOD, Center-J.Weeks, Holder-D.Jones.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1st and 10 at SF 26R.Cartwright up the middle to SF 27 for 1 yard (T.Dobbins; R.Harris).
LD stands his man up but no real push. Kilgore hits 2nd level LB but doesn't sustain block... Wiggins basically tackles his man right into the hole.. no push from Dixon's lead FB block.. Person and Looney do okay considering play was away from them.

2nd and 9 at SF 27J.Johnson pass deep left to A.Jenkins pushed ob at HST 41 for 32 yards (A.Ball).
pass pro was solid for this 3 second throw.. right on the money by J.J. to a well covered A.J. on deep fade

1st and 10 at HOU 41J.Johnson pass incomplete deep left to A.Jenkins.
blocks held up real well here, clean pocket... deep ball to an open A.J. was overthrown about 4 yds

2nd and 10 at HOU 41J.Johnson pass short left to B.Swain to HST 36 for 5 yards (A.Ball).
double ILB blitz up A gap... KIlgore gets one, and the ball is out before Cartwright even had a chance to get LB 2.

3rd and 5 at HOU 36(Shotgun) R.Cartwright up the middle to HST 37 for -1 yards (S.Keo).
It's a pick-your-poison here... Looney pulls and blocks the LE and LOLB coming around the left, which allows a DB right up the middle for the stop... yet if Looney blocked the middle DB, the RB likely gets taken down by the LE. What Kilgore did makes no sense here.. he helps block the RDT that Person engages.. when he could have simply taken out the DB right in front of him, and the play would likely have converted a first.

4th and 6 at HOU 37D.Akers 55 yard field goal is GOOD, Center-B.Jennings, Holder-A.Lee.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1st and 10 at HOU 20J.Forsett right guard to HST 22 for 2 yards (E.Bakhtiari). PENALTY on HST-G.Graham, Offensive Holding, 10 yards, enforced at HST 22.
Bakhtiari showing consistent ability to anchor and get push on TEs, watch the run, and disengage to make tackle. Jerrod-Eddie was doubled and washed out.. Ian W lost a few yds, but anchored down to clog... nice job Wilhoite to find lane and help stuff runner

1st and 18 at HOU 12T.Yates pass incomplete short right to J.Casey.
DL got slow gradual push of pocket... quick throw.. Bakhtiari shows good coverage on TE streak. Culliver playing too far off.

2nd and 23 at HOU 7(Shotgun) J.Grimes left end to HST 23 for 16 yards (D.McBath).
Brown got sucked in by delay handoff... ILB Holland couldn't get free of a block. McBath was fast to cover ground for the stop

3rd and 7 at HOU 23(Shotgun) T.Yates pass to K.Martin pushed ob at HST 34 for 11 yards (M.Thomas).
pocket gradually closed, but not fast enough... Thomas tries to press another WR close by and the efforts allow other WR to get immediate separation on an out route

1st and 10 at HOU 34J.Forsett left tackle to HST 37 for 3 yards (J.Holland).
The weakside with Ian W, Massifilo, Brown all lost a couple but anchored up well after... great job by Holland to fly through a gap and make the tackle

2nd and 7 at HOU 37T.Yates sacked at HST 28 for -9 yards (J.Holland). Timeout #1 by SF at 00:14.
timing and speed most impressive from Holland here as he blitzes in between C and LG... great sack. LG was terrible there, and shows the thing I just hate about zone blocking.

3rd and 16 at HOU 28(Shotgun) T.Yates pass short right to J.Grimes to HST 33 for 5 yards (M.Masifilo).
3 man rush, quick screen being set up... great job Masifilo to sniff it out for tackle... also there quickly was Cory Nelms, showing awareness and first cutting off the outside for YAC

End of 3rd Quarter

4th Quarter - Texans game 2 play-by-play

1st and 10 at SF 15A.Dixon right guard to SF 24 for 9 yards (S.Keo).
good job Wiggins to drive block the LE away, and good job Looney for his pull block on the SOLB. also good block on ILB by Hyb. FB Reuland.. Owusu showing nice downfield blocking on WR

2nd and 1 at SF 24L.James right guard to SF 25 for 1 yard (K.Browner).
Dobbs at TE, he got a good chip block push on the LE and worked his way for a 2nd level RE block, pretty good.. Kilgore got push on RE and Dobbs slipped in to help even more.. was impressed with the physicality of Derek Hall at RG vs NT. Looney pulls in for solid ILB block.. NO push for Dixon on SOLB and Wiggins got beaten up badly by the LE. those two failed this play,

1st and 10 at SF 25J.Johnson pass short left to K.Reuland to SF 40 for 15 yards (E.Pleasant).
Edge pressure picked up by Person but oh my, he basically gave up too much ground before anchoring and got pushed into J.J. just after the throw.. all else held up enough. very nice read by JJ to wide open Reuland on crossing route

1st and 10 at SF 40J.Johnson pass incomplete deep middle to A.Jenkins. PENALTY on SF-P.Butrym (Wiggins, actually), Offensive Holding, 10 yards, enforced at SF 40 - No Play.
PA misdirection worked pretty well against the front 7... decent Dixon block on only real threat SOLB... Wiggins beaten inside by LDE on the snap.. good holding call.. Wiggins probably could have avoided that and that LE was unlikely to get to JJ in time anyway, but the hold did save JJ a hit.. ball overthrown by about a foot or 1.5.

1st and 20 at SF 30J.Johnson pass short middle to B.Tyms to SF 42 for 12 yards (S.McManis).
both Wiggins and Person giving up too much on edge rushers, but JJ liked what he saw and threw early enough. Tyms wide open short middle crossing route.

2nd and 8 at SF 42J.Johnson left end to SF 47 for 5 yards (B.Harris).
designed rollout... JJ showing that speed. Had he actually handed off on PA, Looney pulling and the others strong-side opened up some room there. would have had the first, but AJJ not the best perimeter block

3rd and 3 at SF 47J.Johnson pass incomplete short right to A.Jenkins (S.McManis).
Blocking went well... very needed FB Dixon low block on SOLB that wasn't perfect but helped buy JJ enough time... pass dropped by AJJ

4th and 3 at SF 47A.Lee punts 40 yards to HST 13, Center-B.Jennings. T.Holliday for 87 yards, TOUCHDOWN. (Punt hang time 4.22 seconds.)920R.Bullock extra point is GOOD, Center-J.Weeks, Holder-D.Jones.
terrible angles from Holland, Colin Jones, and Trenton Robinson... the gunner Cory Nelms was shoved out of bounds and by the time he gets back in, he's already beyond the PR... just awful awareness fail here

1st and 10 at SF 12L.James up the middle to SF 16 for 4 yards (S.Loiseau).
decent pull block Person who is now at LG.. Netter at LT looked pretty bad on the ROLB coming around edge, but it didn't affect the play... Looney at RG did great job of moving the NT away from run lane.. Wiggins fought shoved on LE as he went 2nd level to block LB, Dobbs blocked the LE, but ultimately couldn't stop him from clogging lane.. Dixon kept the SOLB out of it, but looked a bit lazy

2nd and 6 at SF 16S.Tolzien pass short left to K.Reuland to SF 19 for 3 yards (O.Gaither).
good block Dixon in picking up WOLB... J.J. throws to a well covered Reuland on quick out... ball placement rather poor (low and wide)

3rd and 3 at SF 19(Shotgun) S.Tolzien pass short left to A.Dixon pushed ob at SF 26 for 7 yards (R.Carmichael).
blocks were okay on this quick throw... Netter at LT not leaving much room between he and J.J.

1st and 10 at SF 26S.Tolzien pass incomplete short right to C.Owusu (B.Harris) [R.Moore]. PENALTY on SF-P.Butrym, Offensive Holding, 10 yards, enforced at SF 26 - No Play.
Wiggins badly beaten inside by SOLB... Dixon with great FB block on WOLB. ball on target, but somewhat? dropped by Owusu.. CB closed fast and may have gotten a piece of the ball or Owusu's hand?

1st and 20 at SF 16(Shotgun) A.Dixon right guard to SF 15 for -1 yards (O.Gaither, J.Nading).
good pull block Person to block an ILB.. nice job Wiggins to drive off the LE.. Celek did well at first on SOLB, but was disengaged from as the RB arrived. no one accounted for the other ILB though.. can't tell who was supposed to block him

2nd and 21 at SF 15A.Dixon up the middle to SF 17 for 2 yards (J.Nading).
Reuland as FB lead blocker pops the penetrating ILB.. giving Dixon a chance here.. no push from Beeler on NT, but I like how Hall at LG and Netter at LT drove the RE into the ground... Celek failed on his block of WOLB... because Dixon cut it hard left, the play took time that allowed a DB to slice in for a stop. between the cloggage of Reuland and ILB blitz up middle, and Person failing his block on SOLB... Dixon really wasn't going anywhere

3rd and 19 at SF 17(Shotgun) S.Tolzien pass incomplete short middle to N.Palmer.
blocks held up well on this 5 man rush... great job Dixon to pick up ILB blitz.. only issue was Beeler getting pushed back in the pocket too much by NT. Tolzien overshot Palmer here... so Palmer must have cut his route short.

4th and 19 at SF 17A.Lee punts 56 yards to HST 27, Center-K.Nelson. T.Holliday to HST 26 for -1 yards (J.Holland). PENALTY on HST-M.Norris, Illegal Block Above the Waist, 10 yards, enforced at HST 26

1st and 10 at HOU 16C.Keenum pass short right to L.Brock to HST 36 for 20 yards (J.Holland).
PA to weakside draws our front 7 one way as receivers run to the other. Bakhtiari bit too, but not as much and recovered very well. He was a couple inches shy of an amazing INT leap. Holland also recovered quickly, but still trailed the TE by 1.5 yds. (Butrym at RE, Masifilo at NT, Jerrod-Eddie ay LE)

1st and 10 at HOU 36J.Forsett left guard to 50 for 14 yards (K.Hunter).
LG drove Butrym right outta the run lane... Ian W was driven back a yd by C before being viciously cut down by RG... Holland absorbed the FB block to shut that lane down, but Wilhoite got swallowed up by the carnage of Ian Williams and there was another clear lane (Butrym's) the RB chose.

1st and 10 at 50C.Keenum pass incomplete short middle to D.Posey.
zero pressure.. perfect throwing pocket vs our 5 man rush... open WR but pass was far too high.. Holland closes in underneath and likely would have nailed him coming down.

2nd and 10 at 50J.Grimes right guard to SF 44 for 6 yards (E.Bakhtiari, K.Rowe).
Thank Jeebus these 3 DL won't be here for long... they are pretty terrible at holding the POA... Jerrod-Eddie/Masifilo/Butrym... they are so gone next week. Bakhtiari fights off TE and dives in for a piece of RB while Rowe comes around other edge fast to help from behind.

3rd and 4 at SF 44(Shotgun) C.Keenum pass incomplete short right to J.Iglesias.
Purvis flies in on outside CB blitz... pretty tight trailing coverage on out route by Holland... ball high and nearly one handed from stretching WR... McBath closed quickly outside and had a shot at the falling ball but was slow to react

4th and 4 at SF 44D.Jones punts 27 yards to SF 17, Center-J.Weeks, downed by HST-E.Pleasant. (Punt hang time 4.25 seconds.)

1st and 10 at SF 17(Shotgun) S.Tolzien pass short left to B.Tyms to SF 25 for 8 yards (D.Johnson).
OL blocked well here (ah... 3 man rush)... strong sideline throw by Tolzien and very impressive catch by Tyms.

2nd and 2 at SF 25(Shotgun) S.Tolzien pass short middle to C.Owusu to SF 30 for 5 yards (S.Loiseau).
Netter at LT struggled a bit too much on WOLB rush... same goes for Person at RT on SOLB... nice job picking up ILB, James... nice poise from Tolzien

1st and 10 at SF 30(Shotgun) S.Tolzien pass incomplete short middle to B.Tyms. SF-L.James was injured during the play.
Hall at RG struggled and allowed the blitz ILB to penetrate over inside shoulder... ball overthrown here.. was the right read.. let's blame Tyms for not being 6' 6", k?

2nd and 10 at SF 30(Shotgun) S.Tolzien pass incomplete short middle to C.Owusu (D.Johnson).
pass pro was decent... Looney took just one moment to stand idle in front of the stunting RE and the RE jumped and batted the pass.

3rd and 10 at SF 30(Shotgun) S.Tolzien pass incomplete deep left to N.Palmer (R.Carmichael).
pass pro again was okay... read was fine, but pass was head-scratchingly underthrown... ball should have been deeper and outside, but was short and inside... let's blame WR for running wrong route!

4th and 10 at SF 30(Shotgun) S.Tolzien pass incomplete deep right to C.Owusu.
ROLB gets just washed past QB by Netter... Person keeps ROLB just enough away from QB, but way too much ground given up... nearly got backed into Tolzien.. very poor read and throw.. too much coverage up and over. Had the ball not sailed out of bounds, it would likely have been INT'd unless Owusu could have broken it up.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1st and 10 at SF 30D.Meggett left guard to SF 28 for 2 yards (M.Wilhoite).
great job Wilhoite to find run lane and snuff it out... Jerrod-Eddie was bearing down as well.. Butrym pushed around yet again

2nd and 8 at SF 28D.Meggett right guard to SF 19 for 9 yards (M.Masifilo).
Butrym, Jerrod-Eddie doubled and driven away... Holland gets blocked 2nd level by LG... Rowe gets around edge free but just not quick enough to dive for RB.. great job Masifilo to fight off cut block and hustle from behind

1st and 10 at SF 19J.Grimes left guard to SF 14 for 5 yards (J.Holland, K.Rowe). PENALTY on HST, Offensive Holding, 10 yards, enforced at SF 19 - No Play.
only thing good was Rowe hustling to tackle RB from behind... DL lost yds, but recovered to clog soon after

1st and 20 at SF 29C.Keenum kneels to SF 31 for -2 yards.
2nd and 22 at SF 31C.Keenum kneels to SF 33 for -2 yards.
3rd and 24 at SF 33C.Keenum kneels to SF 34 for -1 yards.

End of Game
