Cedric Benson - RB - Bengals
ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports that free agent Cedric Benson is currently in Green Bay and expected to sign with the Packers.
It's a shrewd move by a shrewd organization. Benson isn't going to average more than four yards a pop on his 29-year-old legs, but he can still move the chains, get what's blocked, and stay healthy. He's a durable, workmanlike player at this stage of his career, which is really all the Packers need in an offense that creates running lanes with a lethal passing attack. James Starks has struggled mightily in camp and the preseason opener, and Alex Green is coming off an ACL tear. Benson isn't more than a mid-range RB3 and lacks passing-game ability, but he's now the fantasy back to own in Green Bay. Just expect little to no upside.

Who wants to bet that his best game of the year comes against the Bears? I like this signing for them, actually.

Hmm in what way have James Starks struggled?

Benson isn't good at catching the football, how's his blocking?

Would have rather brought back Grant then Benson. Have never been a fan of Cedric Benson. Hopefully Alex Green can get healthy and get on the field after his season ending injury last season. We need him.

starks just sucks tbh. he hasn't been the same since our SB run in the playoffs.

he dances too much, doesn't run hard, runs too upright, and looks like he has no speed anymore. every time he rushes the ball i expect a gain of 1 or a loss of 1.

honestly, i wouldn't mind running with cedric benson, alex green, and marc tyler. all bigger backs who can pass pro and run hard and violently.

Benson can pass protect?

News to me.

He never really did it with the Bengals. Every third down they brought in Leonard.

He's really not a good RB anymore. Dances too much, vision isn't good anymore, not fast. I'm actually kind of surprised anyone signed him.

I actually thought Vick Ballard would've been a good fit for the Pack for only a mid-round pick. A past-prime Benson's still an upgrade over Starks, though.

I think thats a good move by GB. Ced when healthy is good enough to carry the load for a team.

If by carry the team you mean be one of the worst RB's in the league, sure.

Benson is the poster boy for why 1,000 yards means nothing. His YPC is amongst the very worst in the last 30 years for a guy with as many carries as he has. He's terrible.

Benson is awful. He's never been a good RB.

Expect Greenbay to go look for a runnuningback early in their next draft

Doubt it, We got Green with a 4th rounder and his game is ideal for our system.

We don't dedicate many resources to the RB spot. Hence why we're scrapping the bottom of the barrel.

It doesn't really matter - the team might only need him to get 2-3 yards every once in a while. Aaron Rodgers is among the few that don't need a running game. Benson is HorriAwful. He's not fast. He can't catch. He can't pass protect. Every once in a while he falls forward and gets 3 yards. That's about it.

I can think of a dozen guys that would be better options for the Packers. Preferable somebody that can catch and pass block. Benson has shown that he can be marginally effective if he gets lots of carries but he's not going to get that in Green Bay. I hope it's a vet min and the team isn't tied to him if it doesn't work out.

Agreed, but I personally dont think Green will be that good.

His skillset is ideal, but I dont think any of those skills are really great...and I think if Green Bay does have a chance to get a really good RB early, they would take it.

I think it would have to be a steal and/or a back that really fits their offense, but I dont think they would pass on a quality back if it was the BPA and the value at other needed positions wasnt there.

Not for the Packers, they just arent likely to take a RB early. As of now, they just have too many holes on defense for a RB to be worthwhile. Maybe some of the young Dlineman or DBs step up for them, but until then, defense has to be the biggest concern in Green Bay.
